There isn't anything revolutionary in this book, but it is very useful if you're new to making charts or want to refine your skills to become a better presenter.This text does a great job of articulating how charts can be made to maximize their effectiveness. Some of the tips that now seem intuitively obvious include: only try to make one point with a chart because a busy chart will be quickly disregarded, put a one sentence sub-title on the chart which explicitly tells the audience what that one point is, and list the source of information below the data. Small refinements like these have helped make my presentations go smoother by allowing my audience to follow my arguments by making my thesis crystal clear and minimizing questions on where my data came from or what they're looking at in a chart.Although some see this book being pre-Excel/PowerPoint as a drawback, I disagree because these are just the modern tools to make the same charts this text describes.

The first 2 sections of the book provides a good procedure for making a clear communication : determine your message, identify the type of comparison and then select a suitable chart type.The thidd section entitled "Say it with concepts and metaphors" consists of around 60 pages with graphical symbols and pictures. There is little to none explanation given so I tend to consider these pages as plain and simple book page filling.The last section looks like an recent update added to the existing material. This becomes obvious when knowing only this section contains colored pages. The bulk of the book are pages without color. For a book on presentation techniques this is a serious mistake.In conclusion reading this book will give you a feeling of "interesting stuff" on one side but also a feeling of incompleteness and clumpsy finishing. A rework by adding colors and some explanation about when and how to concepts and metaphors is more than welcome.

There's a lot of useful information in this book. The most educational for me is1. Decide what your message is and THEN design your chart. Don't just generate whatever chart Excel will spit out for you, generate the chart that SAYS what you are trying to say.2. Once you know what you are trying to say, there are TRIGGER WORDS that lead you to the correct chart. "Increasing" suggests a time series chart. "More than" suggests an item chart. Etc.3. The author also shows how to highlight certain lines or bars in the chart to draw the eye to the point you're trying to make.4. The exercises are useful for internalizing what you've read and feeling a sense of mastery.As others have noted, the book ends at the halfway mark but the author fills up the last half of the book with pointless illustrations and visuals to communicate concepts. But how many pictures of process flows do you need to see to get the point? And what am I supposed to do with a page full of mazes? So the last half of the book is pointless. For this, I take off a mark.The author has also added a few pages on how to create slides using PowerPoint. But the advice misses the mark by a mile, suggesting you use colored text on a black background, and encourages the use of animations. In fact, black on white has the best readability and animations are more often just self-indulgent play that doesn't improve clarity for the audience.However, the first half of the book is excellent, practial and will give your charts purpose and your presentation clear meaning. These few simple concepts, accompanied by attractively hand-drawn examples, makes the book more than worthwhile.

Great basic guide to building informative, simple charts. The book is a bit dated but the fundamentals presented have held up well in the modern world of data visualization.

I just received the new latest version of this book - August, 2004. The book succeeds in showing good and bad examples of the same presentations, but that doesn't require a book. It requires a graphics department. Nowhere does the book tell you how to make any of the charts. In today's world, many of us must create our own presentations with whatever is available, usually Excel or Powerpoint or similar tools.I would also offer that most readers will not work through the exercises, as the percentage of our jobs that requires chart development is usually small. I grasped the basics of the book quickly. Keep it simple. I will assume that certain professionals, such as those in marketing or sales or executives giving a presentation to the board of directors, might need this level of specialization, but I find little useful in the book. Following the guideline of 'keep it simple', I will simplify my priorities, by focusing on other skills mastery. Mastering charts to this degree is beyond my needs.

Even though this book was originally written in 1985 and last updated in 2001, it is still a treasure. Section 1, Choosing Charts, provides the best framework I have even seen for choosing which chart to use to support a given message. Section 2, Using Charts, not only provides great tips for presenting data but also shows pairs of good & bad charts so you can see the difference. ou can skip sections 3 & 4 (metaphors and color/special effects) since the advice is now very dated. Still Sections 1 & 2 make this book a must have classic and a treasure. I'm told Steven Few is the new Zelazny when it comes to data visualization - just picked up his 3 books and looking forward to comparing the two.

If you are looking for excercises on how to convey information visually, this is the book for you. The author is of course one of the best at this specific task so you are learning from the best. Don't expect to learn straight "answers" on how to make your graphics, this book is all about thinking about how to make them, but implementing the concepts can definitely vary in your actual work products.

About the Author

William Strunk, Jr. first used his own book, The Elements of Style, in 1919 for his English 8 course at Cornell University. The book was published in 1935 by Oliver Strunk. E. B. White was a student in Professor Strunk's class at Cornell, and used "the little book" for himself. Commissioned by Macmillan to revise Strunk's book, White edited the 1959 and 1972 editions of The Elements of Style.

I purchased the ebook The Elements of Style. It has the fourth edition cover, but it's actually the free Project Gutenberg 1st edition, written solely by William Strunk Jr in 1918. It is dishonest for Amazon to sell this; I called customer service and obtained a refund.

This publication of the book is sub par quality. It looks like someone found the text of the original Elements of Style online, copied and pasted it into Word, printed it, and bound it together in a cheap cover. There are even "track changes" edits throughout the book! The formatting is a mess everywhere with large unexplained spaces and gaps. This is truly an unacceptable product and should not even be sold. It is false advertising and I am returning it immediately with a complaint to Amazon.I gave it three stars so people would be more likely to read my review. DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION!! ISBN-13 9781537669649

Don't buy this kindle version, it's full of formatting errors. A shame to see a grammar book trashed like this. I had to ask for a refund. Look somewhere else.

I've read two different editions of this book - I borrowed the 6th? 7th? edition (the one with the blue cover that is expanded) and I own the 3rd edition (which is not expanded). Let me tell you, this slim book packs a powerful punch. I've always struggled with being concise in my writing, and this book is THE book to help you maximize your writing. It should be required in high schools everywhere.Back when I worked for a newspaper, one of my editors was trying to get a review of mine on a particular page, which meant he needed to edit a little bit out ... he came back and told me - I couldn't edit your review. Every word was essential. - YES. Thank you, Strunk & White.

This review isn't to the content of the book, but about the Kindle Edition.The book I downloaded had the cover for the Strunk and E.B. White version, Fourth Edition but was actually the 1920 edition with the wrong cover. So just wanted to give potential readers of this book a head's up that if you want to buy this book on Kindle, do the "Look Inside" preview to make sure the edition matches the cover and description.

First published in 1920, this definitive text on English grammar and composition answers most style questions in approximately 100 pages. There have been countless other efforts since this one, often with hundreds more pages, but none do it better. It answers the basic questions any writer occasionally encounters-comma usage, clauses, paragraphs and construction. Despite the fact it's been nearly 100 years since this book was written, it's never been rendered obsolete. It doesn't matter if your field is business or creative writing, the rules of structure still apply. The English language is imprecise and difficult to master but without understanding the elements of it then properly constructing anything from an email to a thesis or novel will not occur. In these days of emojis and alphabetical shortcuts, we are losing the battle of writing proper sentences but this book, if studied, will remind us of how important the written word is and how to make it understandable. A must read for anyone interested in writing well.

The famous, beloved version of this book is the version by *Strunk and White* (written a hundred years ago by William Strunk and – importantly – updated by E.B. White), and that's what this product is pretending to be (worse, actually, it's pretending to be the version illustrated by Maira Kalman). In fact, the Kindle version presented here was neither updated by E.B. White nor illustrated by Maira Kalman; it's just the old public domain text.

I'm a huge fan of the Omnivores Dilemma and recommended it to more people than any other book I've read so `In Defense of Food' had a lot to live up to but somewhere something what badly haywire.American's are getting fatter and fatter with average life spans that are considerably out of sync with the wealth of our nation. `In Defense of Food' takes an outsiders view of nutrition in the U.S., throwing stones at the establishment including nutritionists, food manufacturers and the FDA. Michael Pollan's argument is that it is our very obsession with food that throws the system off and we need to just relax and enjoy food. It sounds like the same advice being expounded in the book about how French women are supposedly never fat. Unfortunately we can't relax because we are constantly bombarded with calorie dense foods specifically designed for massive consumption. The author's suggestion is to step back, avoid the processed foods and start spending more on `whole foods' and items purchased from local farmers markets.The main emphasis in the book is on eating a `traditional' diet. Something great-grandmother might have created. The author blames `western diseases' on a `western diet' but it's hard to know what constitutes a western diet, after all, three of the countries he suggests emulating are France, Italy and Greece. Are they not western? American's are definitely growing fatter but if it's due to synthetic substances like Margarine, Crisco and Nutrasweet why have American waistlines continue to grow as these substances have grown decreasingly popular? And if eating natural food is the magic elixir why do I find overweight farmers at my local farmers market? Shouldn't they all be aglow with vitality living to 120?My wife is from Malaysia and her fathers' parents consumed a very `traditional' Chinese diet all their lives and yet died in there early 60's. Her grandmother passed away from a stroke brought on by high blood pressure and her grandfather by a heart attack. The way Michael Pollan talks this doesn't sound possible. I would also say that for an author who insists on taking a holistic view of eating as opposed to a reductionist one he completely omits taking into account cultural lifestyles in people heaths. Perhaps it's the high quality health care system in France that makes the difference or perhaps not but the author never even considers anything but consumption.The advice that Michael Pollan gives is sound but most of it is so simple that it could probably fit into a pamphlet rather than a 200 page book which may explain why the book seems to veer off into unnecessary directions. Eating more vegetables is always good advice and the author even admits that every hated nutritionist he's talked has offered exactly that advice so how exactly is Mr. Pollan different from nutritionists? He lambastes nutritionists for taking a reductionist view of nutrition but then goes on at length about maintaining a proper balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 in your diet. Did great-grandmother worry about the ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 in the food she served?Morgan Spurlock of `Supersize Me' probably hit the nail right on the head. It's the amount of calories that American's eat that's doing us in. Avoiding synthetic foods is probably good advice but it's advice like avoiding swimming after eating a meal and not likely to make much of a change in your life. I lost 50 pounds last year and it had nothing to do with eating traditional meals or avoiding margarine. I reduced my intake of calorie dense food including soda and fast food. This is the kind of advice any nutritionist will give out.What bothered me most about this book was how Michael Pollan went on the attack when none of his advice is that far off from what other nutritionists and dieticians are recommending. It's a decent book but lacks focus and has difficulty defining what he's talking about when he uses terms like `Western' and `Traditional' diets. Quite frankly, this book is more of just a subset of Omnivores Dilemma and if you've read that one you could probably skip this one.

I have a medical and science background...so traced references cited....everything checks out. Recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis at age 63 and weight 284 pounds. Read this book the first week of January.....went shopping for real foods the second week of January. Find it satisfying to eat no more than 4 oz of red meat 2-3 times a week....salmon, mackeral, sardines 2-3 times a week....and a couple of days with no meat...just veggie omega 3 sources. Have re-read the book....highlighted...added notes on all pages...and bought 2 more copies for my 30 and 21 year olds...both who grew up in the age of "nutritionism" with all its false information. Following Pollan's common sense advice....paying the extra for organic basic veggies and olive oil. Decided to eliminate all wheat and corn until I loose the weight I've set as a goal.Five weeks eating 3 meals a day...and by week two much of the chronic 24 hour a day pain was gone and I began walking the elliptical and the woods. Five weeks and 30 pounds lighter....with more energy than I've had in 20 years. Buy this book, learn it, live it, tell your loved ones.

Well-organized and well-written, this book covers how we got to where we are, buying processed foods labeled with various health claims that are meaningless. We find out about the rise of the nutrition industry and how they’ve led us astray. We’ve all heard that fresh, less-processed is better, but the author does an excellent job of explaining why. Living in Switzerland decades ago, I said, half jokingly with no scientific basis in my head, that the cheese and chocolate was excellent because of happy cows, all roaming the hillsides looking content indeed. The author validates my offhand comment and explains the science behind it. I’ve been buying eggs from pasture grazed hens, for the sake of the hens. The author tells us that the nutrition content of eggs from grass-grazed eggs is vastly different from those of grain-fed hens. I’ve been buying grass-fed beef after cringing at the conditions in El Paso and Central California feed lots after driving past, again for the cows’ sake. The author explains how the meat from grain fed cows is very different nutritionally from naturally grass-grazing cows. Interesting how consideration and care for the animals in our food supply chain dovetails with our own health. This book is a must read for anyone who believes that what you eat effects your health and wants a simple framework for making better eating choices.

This book was life-changing for me! I found Pollan's writing style to be thoughtful, clear, and relatable. And I can't tell you how many times "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." has run through my head in the years since first reading it. I appreciate how he challenges so much of what we hear about diet -- every time researchers think they have the key to nutrition or weight loss, something new is discovered to turn it on its head.The book helped me explore my interest in more traditional diets made up of pure/whole foods, leave behind food-like (and gimmicky) products in the stores, and switch to cooking & baking from scratch. After reading it, I was inspired to buy a grain mill for my kitchen so I could grind my own flour and truly bake from scratch using whole grain flour (and wrote a get-started guide to help others do the same). Being able to control what goes into my food has improved my health and energy. I can't recommend this book enough.I also like the companion book "Food Rules" Food Rules: An Eater's Manual, which I'd recommend if you want a brief "just tell me what to do" book. But for more detailed information that may help you change your food and eating mindset, "In Defense of Food" is the way to go.
