This book was recommended to me by one of the most educated and interesting friends I know - also educated in Western medicine.I would have been resistant to ideas of fairies, aliens and machine elves, had I not experienced similar beings myself, during ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru with Shipibo shamans. This book pushes the boundaries of biophysics, neuroscience and ethnobotany, and opens new ideas for research in psychedelic science. The connections between DMT and DNA make this book worth reading alone.Read this, if you have an open mind, or are curious about our place in the physical and non-physical universes.

For all you book readers out there who want something good that will blow your mind, I would HIGHLY reccomend this gem. If you want a more in-depth understanding of the supernatural, how it applies to us as humans, and how it all works and functions from a practical and also a theoretical point of view, this is the book for you. Graham Hancock (the author) has always been a respectable and revolutionary archaeologist & investigator and is considered a pioneer in the realm of pre-history, archaeology, archaeoastronomy, anthropology, ancient religions & mythology and their origins, the occult, etc. All the hidden knowledge and information about human life on this planet and its origins can all be found in his books. I've always been a skeptical type of person, but all of his work is backed up with a solid foundation of evidence necessary to support it. Every single chapter of every one of his books that I've read was a mindblowing experience, I'll leave it at that.

Hancock certainly is compelling - and he has done his research! Often times I found his claims, outrageous as they are, kind of abrupt and even flimsy, but every single time as I kept reading, the following pages connected dots and drew parallels and he backed up his claims with fascinating research and supporting arguments from others, sometimes with altogether distinct points of view but dissecting the same evidence. By the 350th page, the evidence, no matter how circumstantial, has really piled up in front of you. His theories are fleshed out and fascinating, but of course, even if never proven, or proven wrong, it is a mystical experience just to read this book and digest these ideas. A lot of what he postulates reminds me of Carl Sagan, Carl Jung, Terrence McKenna, and Joseph Campbell. Rooted in science, but branching out into mysticism and symbolism. Consciousness delving deeper into consciousness than our current paradigm requires. Graham Hancock has even done first-hand research – shamanic experiences, psychoactive substances, etc. – and created a wonderfully thought-provoking piece of work with this book.

Such an interesting book! Graham Hancock isn't afraid to go against mainstream thinking, making his research a little more exciting! And he puts himself right in the middle of his research which gives him some credibility others often don't have and don't have the courage to gain. He's got me asking questions for myself and I think that should always be the point.I do regret though, that he didn't narrate this himself. He did an excellent job recording Magicians of the Gods (another steller book!)

Without coming to any conclusion or positing any definitive theory, the purpose of this book is to point out some pretty astounding similarities between ancient pre-historic cave drawings, traditional accounts of fairy lore, modern scientific experiments with DMT, and alien abduction testimonies.Shamans from many world cultures have used combinations of plants to communicate with "higher-beings" of some kind who teach them things. But contemporary UFO abduction stories, descriptions of trips on mushrooms, DMT or other natural substances, and traditional accounts of fairies have a lot in common that defies cultural boundaries. There are enough startling parallels for Graham to build the case that there is a big mystery here that cannot be explained. At the outset Graham makes clear that he doesn't believe in "extraterrestrials" as in real aliens, but also that there seems to be some kind of "reality" which exists apart from our own, which humans have always been able to access, with consistent results:"SO if we were smart, we would listen to what the shamans have to say about the true character and complexity of reality, instead of basking mindlessly in the overweening one-dimensional arrogance of the Western technological mindset."If these visions were productive, then they would vary with each individual's background and culture. Instead, they are remarkably uniform across all boundaries. This means that they must be "hardwired" into humans somehow; the most obvious place for this to take place is in the "junk DNA". Careful not to overstep, Graham ends the books rather suddenly, inconclusively, without offering any solution as to why, when or how such a thing took place, except by pointing out it is extremely unlikely that evolution could have preserved junk code that makes humans enter into imaginary realms. As someone who's experienced these mystical states, felt the presence of higher beings and had alien abduction experiences (which I had convinced myself were purely psychological and had absolutely no foundation in "reality"), Supernatural definitely had my attention. There does seem to be a common experience that has been recorded in various human epochs with enough detail to make coincidence unlikely; and as Graham points out, this alone is a fascinating, even incredible feature of human existence.

From Publishers Weekly

The immune system is a scapegoat for a variety of ills in this wide-ranging but tendentious guide to approaching diseases like lupus, Crohn's disease, MS, and rheumatoid arthritis. The author argues that autoimmune disorders, in which a malfunctioning immune system attacks healthy tissues, are caused or triggered by environmental toxins, especially heavy metals and free radicals. Drawing on his experience treating patients for the above disorders as well as chronic fatigue syndrome and autism, he recommends a variety of unconventional regimens to purge toxins from our bodies and surroundings, including chelation therapy, herb, vitamin and anti-oxidant supplements, an organic diet free of additives and allergens, sauna and massage, and the systematic use of air and water filters. Edelson provides detailed information in chapters covering specific autoimmune disorders, but his claims of a "fantastic" treatment record for some of them rely on anecdotal case studies of diseases that sometimes go into spontaneous remission. By the tenets of "clinical molecular medicine," he claims, "I don't need to know the specific autoimmune disorder a patient has, because the label doesn't matter." Since no specific disease label need be applied, such widespread and indeterminate "symptoms" as "fatigue," "depression," "muscle and joint pain," "frustration," "sparse hair," "brain fog" and "general malaise" can be construed as signs of the immune dysfunction. While this book offers information on conventional treatments and physicians, its orientation is decidedly elsewhere. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

About the Author

Deborah Mitchell is a medical writer and journalist specializing in complementary medicine and nutrition topics. Her articles have appeared in professional journals, as well as national consumer magazines. She has authored and co-authored eleven books about various health topics, including Natural Healing for Back Pain, The Natural Guide to Headache Relief, The Dictionary of Nutritional Healing, Natural Aphrodisiacs, Natural Medicine for PMS and MSm: The Natural Pain Relief Remedy. I don't believe I mentioned my all-time favorite book, however: Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, which I think is a must read for everyone. "Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity" is the motto I live by, and I personally think the world would be in much better shapeâspiritually and environmentallyâif we lived by the Walden credo. I also think everyone should read "The Velveteen Rabbit," by Margery Williams. Although it's a child's story, it's for the child in everyone. Ms. Mitchell lives and works in Tucson, AZ.

The book itself is somewhat informative. It describes a wide range of tests and treatment protocols. I am reading every boo I can find about intestinal permeability and brain-gut axis. I am doing it because I couldn't find a support from conventional medicine and doctors. So I am pretty open to anything. But I had a problem with the book within first 50 pages thought. That prompted me to seek some additional information on author. From his prospective every autoimmune disease starts with chemical overload and it doesn't matter what autoimmune disorder it is his treatment protocol is the same. I am not kidding. As soon as he went into describing every possible test we need to do I stopped and looked up some information on him. Sure enough all those law suits brought up by parents of children had several things in common: battery of unnecessary tests and several treatments a day (in one case a boy had to take around 50 pills a day in addition to his numerous daily treatments). The main idea of medicine is "not to harm" while trying to heal. I think author has forgotten about this part. At the same time you will find some useful information there.

I learned the answers to so many questions. There'll be times when the doctor doesn't have the time or he's called out of the office. The book is a must read, it's filled with answers to your questions. I'm so glad I ordered books concerning my syndromes and diseases and read them. It keeps me ahead of my illness, it helps keep my mind at better ease because I know a little more each time I read the book. A patient needs to keep up with the doctor's on their illnesses. The doctor's can't memorize all that the patient has wrong with them, the patient must keep up with their own health, too. She must ask pertinent questions and have a pad ready when the doctor answers the question. Reading the book will keep the patient informed and the doctors will be glad they did so.

{Note: The various prior reviews and the synopsis provided gives a fair and accurate description of what the book is about so I'll not repeat those details here.}My opinion: I found that a good portion of the ideas presented for drug-free treatment of AI disease *did* make sense to me; in fact, at one point I have been through some seemingly medically unsound means of getting off all prescriptions for treatment of my diagnosis with Systemic Lupus. The rapid taper and detoxification process I went through was similar in ways to certain methods described in the book. This outside the box thinking I imagine could get a medical professional in trouble with either his colleagues, big drug companies, or even patients that are very ingrained in a specific type of doctor/patient process that they cannot move past. The reasons why there are lawsuits, closed medical centers, and disciplinary actions taken against the author definitely concerns me though. I have seen other outside the box thinkers not have this amount of legal trouble; frankly I think where there is smoke there's usually fire so I have trouble trusting the author and ideas in this book as a result.Bottomline: I would say that I can recommend examining the ideas in the book and then weighing and investigating what you feel comfortable with, along with consultation and advice from your doctor.

I want to reiterate what another reviewer already said: "Don't let the previous review scare you. The quackwatch guys are the quacks themselves. Barrett, who heads up the quackwatch "research", is not a board certified doctor of anything and has been sued a bunch of times." So true! Not only is that true, but any doctor who sets out to provide treatment protocols for patients that do not feed the bloody maw of Big Pharma (which brainwashes the masses into believing that any illness is the lack of one of their drugs!) is guaranteed to at least come under fire if not be set up to take a fall by covert measures.Okay, having said that so that you know I've read the court files and assessed them as a complete set-up, let me now talk about the book. This book is engaging and full of cutting edge science as well as practical advice. Dr. Edelson explains some very complex physiological systems in clear language that even impressed my doctor who said she never did understand it as well even in medical school! Not only that, but Edelson was a pioneer in a field that is now being taken up by other high profile doctors such as Mark Hyman, author of "The Ultra-Mind Solution". They are saying pretty much the same things, only Edelson said it first.Like any other diet or health book, there is a particular focus and some of his ideas and protocols won't work for everyone. But, by and large, Dr. Edelson manages to connect things together in a very comprehensive way, and those people who will not benefit from his approach are, I would think, a vanishing minority. One thing that struck me and convinced me that Dr. Edelson really knew his stuff was his mention of the inflamed blood vessel lumps that appear in the forearms of individuals who suffer rheumatoid arthritis. I've had these lumps for years, I have rheumatoid arthritis, and no other doctor has ever been able to tell me what those lumps are. What's more, they have begun to disappear simply from following the protocol in Dr. Edelson's book. My doctor is even willing to experiment with the anti-biotic treatment for my condition and I'm looking forward to even greater improvement than I have achieved already, and that will be something! I'm already almost 90% free of pain and my good days now far outnumber my bad days!Thank you Dr. Edelson!

Lent this book to my Co-Madre (as she calls us) because I found it so insightful into trying to navigate the lines of good sense and the new generation of child-raising. The book also gave a peek into the difficulties of being the paternal grandmother as well as allowing me to have my own pity-party regarding my daughter's apparent appraisal of MY parenting skills. I have always heeded my step-daughter's remark to her own mother that "she had HER chance at parenting" and now her daughter was forging her own path. However, I get confused when being criticized for embarrassing a 2yr old when I say no to wiping chocolaty hands on my velvet upholstery. The section on the importance to and of the grandfather was also very illuminating. Do not be misled by the cover: this book is not for the batty rocking chair knitter. The book is aimed at the intelligent, often still-employed and active grannies. I now feel better that I was the one to teach the girls to roughhouse and jump on the bed and bought them trucks for the water table. I also feel (slightly) better about the mandatory attendance at childbirth and discussions of eating the placenta. Most of all, I am grateful for the presence of my son-in-law's parents in this journey to advance mankind.

Stahl offers a breezy read. As a grandparent, I certainly agree with her personal discovery of the joy of her new status. On the other hand, I expected some new insights that were, perhaps, less obvious. After all, I don't need to read a book to see the obvious. The book would be stronger with more research-based narrative or perhaps some comparative study of grandmas in different cultures.

A good read...a good start to my "reading up" in preparation for my first grandchild. I too have been shocked by some of my friends--who were career women and who seemed to tolerate parenting more than love it--who changed suddenly into doting grandmothers. ?!? WHAT?!? It was a joy to watch them...and this book helps explain some of what is going on. Great, honest insights. Since I was a mom of five who stayed home and even homeschooled my younger children, one might think I would be "at odds" with Lesley Stahl, career woman extraordinaire. Those mommy wars were mostly invented by some trying to stir up a story--and, yes, perpetuated by a few nasty working women and a few nasty moms at home. Most of us moms had WAY more in common than we had different, and I enjoyed friendships with career moms as well as with other homsechooling moms. Same is true of grandparenting--we have MUCH MORE in common as grandmothers than what is different. This book celebrates that AND gives insights into the journey ahead. Thank you, Lesley, for shining light on the path behind you to help those of us beginning our grandparenting journeys.

This was a very enjoyable, interesting and well-written book. As a grandfather I easily related to it, even though it was written more from the perspective of the grandmother. The demographics were also very informative.

Written by "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl, this is almost an anthropological study of that smiling, happy species known as a "smitten grandmother."Career-focused all her life in a travel-heavy position, Stahl admits she missed a lot of her daughter's growing up. So when she became a grandmother—even though she was still working and lived across the country from her granddaughters—she somehow managed to make more time for these precious babies. And as part of being a smitten grandmother herself, Stahl wrote this book on what it means to be a grandmother (and a grandfather). It is a fun, wise and enlightening book for all grandparents as they figure out their new and vitally important role—be they a biological granny, step-granny or surrogate granny.

I am on my third grandchild and I did not feel that Lesley Stahl portrayed the whole picture. She seemed to pick and choose her audience whom she got her information.

Excellent book for all Grandmas! Ms. Stahl did a great job voicing all that I went through as a new grandma 7 years ago. I am still biting my tongue more often than I'd like. It's good to know that we grams have a community out there. I am giving copies to a couple of new grams that I know. are also struggling. Times have sure changed.Maryann

This piece should have been one or two NY Times Magazine or New Yorker articles. Definitely not worth a book. Tell me something I don't already know!
