Reading Ytasha L. Womack's book AFROFuturism is like having a fascinating conversation with a knowledgeable friend while sharing a generous cup of Earl Grey tea, hot.For anyone who has not heard of AFROFuturism, Womack's book is an excellent starting point. For those of us who have been involved in AFROCentric speculative fiction, photography, art or multimedia with a futuristic feel, Womack's book is a delightful confirmation that we are not alone in the universe. Womack did considerable research and her notes at the end provide helpful guidance for readers and writers of speculative fiction who want to get more involved.Womack tell us that AFROFuturism is much more than sci-fi stories about starship captains bouncing throughout the galaxy on sexual conquests. Literature, music, art, dance, politics are all linked to inspire us to create a new future. People of African descent are seeking to go were no "person" has gone before. Each chapter explores a different aspect of AFROFuturism. She manages to meld together anecdotal material, research facts as well as personal insight without being too preachy or lofty. This is not a dry "thesis" written for academic credit, nor smoky, whimsical abstraction. It is a thoughtful document crammed with personal insights. She suggests that the word "AFROFuturism" is fairly new to the cultural scene. It was first mentioned in 1992 by a writer named Mark Dery. But George Clinton's Mothership had landed long before Dery popularized the term. Sun Ra had been creating music that talked about space and other planets in the 1950s and 60s. Samuel Delany was winning awards for his sci-fi writings in the 1970s. The Dogon nation in Africa had revealed discoveries that puzzled modern scientists long before NASA had been created. Black science fiction was being published in the 19th century. In literary magazines during 1920s and 30s, Black heros were uncovering lost civilizations, constructing ray guns, and envisioning a bright, new future for all humankind.I particularly appreciated how Womack credits organizations, websites and people taking up the AFROFuturist mantle. Therefore, it would be shorted-sighted and mean-spirited to accuse Womack of leaving out a few references or new activities. AFROFuturism is growing faster than print. Anyone who desires the most up-to-date activities can use Social Media on the Internet. My ultimate rating for Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture should be a 4.5 (but Amazon doesn't allow for .5).

I bought this book right after reading Octavia Butler's "Bloodchild" (which I highly recommend) because I wanted a little more insight regarding black's in science fiction. I have sadly read very little author's that are Black/African American, and I'm glad I'm correcting that. Without spoiling it, I will say that this definitely a book you may not necessarily read for pleasure, though I did. This is one of those books you could take notes in, learn something, use as a reference. This could be a gateway book to other books in the genre of afrofuturism. Of course, I did enjoy it because I learned some history regarding famous artists and where afrofuturism originated from (to an extent) and where that influence has led since. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a little history lesson, some more author's and artists to discover, etc.

Womack does a great job of describing and exploring the terrain of Afrofuturism, although at parts shies away from some internal debates. It feels written for an audience unfamiliar with the field, and as such tries to give a more seamless and coherent picture than may actually exist. Such it is with any cultural movement.A great jumping off point for deeper exploration and later study--especially what may stand at odds with Afrofuturism as presented herein!

There are a few interesting ideas here, but this book is not clear about what it wants to be. It is not really deep dive into the ideas, it is not really a history, it is not really a reading list... it is a bit of all those things but ends up feeling more like a personal testimonial about how cool afrofuturism is than anything else.

I bought this for my partner after we saw Black Panther. He loves it, hasn’t put it down since it arrived. He isn’t one than reads books, mostly magazines & on line news & articles.

Inwas not familiar with many of the forms/venues in which thevsubjects of his discourse and analysis were located. Illustrations, pictures, and photgraphs would have been very helpful

As a self proclaimed Afrofuturist author and artist, I found Ms. Womack's work to be both informative and inspiring. Growing up in the inner city of Cleveland, OH, I often felt alone and isolated while watching Star Trek and dreaming of a better and diverse future. I now feel a sense of community...I have truly found my tribe. :D Many thanks to Ms. Womack for her thought provoking and well researched work. Power Up!

A very good source for reference material relating to Afrofuturism. This is a well written book that get directly to the point of what Afrofuturism is considered and what encompasses its history. I found links to authors and materials that have greatly increase my understanding of the scope and scale of Afrofuturism in the African-Diaspora. This is a must buy !! "BE GREAT CELEBRATE KWANZAA"

I preordered this book a couple of months ago, fighting tears while sitting in a pool of sweat and feeling disgusting in clothes that were too tight. I was like, "I'm a nurse g-d damn it! Why don't I know about this sh*t!" And why am I talking like a sailor?! I don't talk like that! I had read some articles on the internet, and while they clued me in to some of my symptoms being menopause-related (I was one of those people wondering if I had early-onset Alzheimer's), they also were kinda negative. The message was try hormones, but basically life sucks from now on. This book is positive and straightforward; and while I realize it's got to be upbeat because it's a self-help book, it is also SO GENUINE! And thank you Dr. Allmen for mentioning your dog, because my dogs seriously are my ticket to physical and emotional health so often lately. I'm feeling really positive about facing this new challenge now!

When I hit perimenopause (or rather, it hit ME) at age 46, I thought I was going nuts. Nobody had ever told me what to expect from menopause except for hot flashes (and my older sisters cackling cryptically and saying, "Just wait"). Even my beloved gynecologist was no help -- I went to her in a panic about my cognitive problems, and her response was, "Yep!" "What can I do?" I asked. "When does this go away?" She looked at me for a long moment and then said perkily, "Oh, never! But you get used to it!" NO WAY MAN. She refused to even discuss hormone replacement because it was "too dangerous." Well, I'm not going gentle into that good night. I got on the internet and searched "menopause specialist."Dr. Allmen's practice was the first Google hit. I'm lucky enough to live in NYC, so I was able to make an appointment with her, and she asked that I read her book before coming in. BOY was it worth it! She couldn't have explained all this to me in THREE one-hour appointments. I came in armed with a lot of information and bearing very few questions, because this book really answers a lot of them. It's thorough, detailed, and funny -- but most importantly, it made me feel IN CONTROL OF MY OWN LIFE for the first time in 6 years. I went to my appointment knowing the risks and potential rewards of the various treatments, and with a pretty good idea of how I wanted to proceed, and we discussed it as equals and agreed on a plan of treatment. I don't feel like a washed-up old crone anymore.Thank you, Dr. Allmen, for helping me feel like a whole person again!

I wanted to like this book as it was recommended to me. Unfortunately I found the author’s writing style to be very self-promoting. She may be an expert, but I didn’t need to be continually reminded of it. Similarly, she constantly seemed to be “selling” or previewing upcoming chapters. That’s fine once or twice, but it seemed repetitive. I think there is some good information in the book, I just had a hard time sticking with it because of her style.

This woman SAVED me!!! If you are having ANY menopausal symptoms, this is the book for you!!!!...it will truly change everything we've been led to believe by mainstream media. I suffered for over four years with 20-30 severe hot flashes a day...to the point that at times I felt like I was going to have a breakdown (everything I did triggered them) and then I found Dr Allmen...Thank God!! If you can't get to see this wonderful, revolutionary doctor in NYC, then you need to buy this book and I am sure if you are her patient, like I am, you bought it as soon as it came out. She not only helped me with my menopausal symptoms, but she has THE BEST PREP for a colonoscopy that I have ever taken...leave it to Dr Allmen to figure out how to make that necessary but horrible prep more pleasant and I got an A+ from my GI dr (even though I did not use the one he prescribed). She also addressed the urinary symptoms we begin to face, bone health, heart health...She really is a doctor who addresses ALL of the body and not just her specialty...the world needs more doctors like her!!!!!This book is such a quick read (not a bible!) and a great reference for many of the problems we face during this difficult period of a woman's life. THANK YOU DR ALLMEN!!! You have know idea how much you have done for me and my husband ') !!

This is a Hilarious MUST Read (for the 40+ crowd!) Dr. Tara Allmen demystifies all the mid-life hormonal medical mumbo jumbo - and gives it to you strait - she fills you in on all the fun little secrets no one bothered to warn you about that hit you mid-life - but then helps you navigate thru them- so you're not feeling defeated!!!! She is AMAZING in person - and the book reads like she's right there with you - in her witty, no nonsense, cut to the chase, not gonna waste your time fashion! She gives you all the info for, as she aptly puts it "what to expect when your not expecting!!!" Admittedly I just received my copy last night and am only half way thru, but just had to post this 5 STAR review! I'll follow-up when I finish it! - then I'll pass it on to my husband - as anyone living with a 40+ woman should also be clued in on what Dr. Allmen has to sayit!!!Thank you so much Dr. Allmen for getting all this info out to all of us!!!

Review

Our Study Guide for the DSST Test Is Unlike Any OtherIf you'd like to get the DSST score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the DSST is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game, then this might be the most important message you read this year. Our comprehensive study guide for the DSST is written by our DSST experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to do your best on the DSST. Our original research into the Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), offered by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the DSST. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the DSST.Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:The Three Reasons To Believe What We SayThe First Reason:Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the DSST. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams. The Second Reason:Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the DSST despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers. We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker. We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort. The Third Reason:We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the DSST.A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the DSST- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam. One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the DSST.Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day. You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the DSST...The Exclusive Test Taking TechniquesExplains how the DSST time limits are the #1 enemy of most test takers, and what you can do about it- You avoid falling into the many "time traps" built into the test, giving you an immeasurable advantage over those who go into the test unawareShows you super speed methods to get through the questions you know with ease- Saving you time so you concentrate on the hardest questions without rushingGet quick, customized help for the questions you have- just send us a quick email and we'll get back to you promptly with the answer.Keys to questions that "give away" the wrong (or right) answers- You get credit for some of the questions without really even knowing anything about themDetails the EXACT STUDY PLAN for the DSST that we believe gives the most results in the least time- No matter if you're studying for a week or a month, you won't waste the precious study time you have on useless activitiesOur researchers are more than just academic theoreticians who understand the technical nature of standardized tests, but are also experts on test taking itself- they reveal the exact skills and the information you'll need to perform under pressure during the test.A systematic analysis and the best breakdown into "plain language" of how to deconstruct and master complex problems- You turn the problems that most of the test takers will stumble over to your advantageLearn why, when, and how to guess to your advantage. Many test takers use exactly the wrong strategy, but you can avoid the pitfalls with the help of our standardized test expertsThe secret keys that "gives away" the right answer a lot of the time- You know the special "flags" and the specific "giveaways" to look forIncludes instructions detailing the best way for you to get started with your preparation efforts so you can begin the path of improving your scores immediatelyThe most efficient and accurate method for picking the right answer- You won't be scratching your head trying to read the mind of the test question writer, but will instead know exactly what to look for to pick the best answerOur quick problem solving method for difficult problems- You speed right through these notorious time-wastersCourteous, unlimited customer service is 100% free- if you need the product emailed to a different address, lose the product, or have any other difficulty- the help you need is just a short email away and our representatives are active 7 days a week helping customersThe research of our team of test experts is 100% independent and originalOur exclusive "calibration strategy" to help you never go too fast OR too slow when answering even the toughest questionsThe 5-step process we've developed, what we call the "phased" approach, concerning the use of the various study aids and practice testsHow the problem of procrastination can kill your chance of success, and the most important thing you can do about itHow to know when you've studied as much as you need to for the exam- and the reason why we think some people should spend LESS time studying for the testThe Top 20 things you should take care of within 24 hours of taking the test- use the list we provide as a checklist to make sure you've taken care of the "little things" in addition to studying hardHow to predict the right answer before you see the answer choices- and how to prevent the wrong answers from "polluting" your mind and tempting you into a trap designed by the test writers --Why answers that "sound" correct are often the very ones that are wrong- and how to tell the difference between the right answer and the many clever-sounding traps set for you by the test writersDo you know what a "hedge phrase" is? Learn why looking for the key "weasel words" in the question can help identify the correct answerWhy "new information" in the answer choices almost always means that the answer choice is wrong- and the way to avoid this trick planted by the clever test writersLearn to avoid this time-draining mistake on the test - why the technical terms you don't know can be a major stumbling block and waste precious time, and the way that you can work around themThe secret to using the contextual clues in the questions and the answer choices to make important distinctions between the right and the wrong answer choicesThe two situations where you should NOT check your answers thoroughlyHow to avoid careless mistakes by using the quick "double check" system. It will more than pay for itself relative to the time it will take youTest writers will often quote directly from the question in an answer- learn whether this is something you should trust or avoidWhy "extreme statements" in the answer choices are dead giveaways for wrong answers- find out how to detect the subtle differences between reasonable answers and the answers that are almost always wrongLearn how to group your answer choices into "families" that often narrows down the pool of correct answers- this is a quick way to immediately eliminate one or two of the answer choices and increase your odds of getting the question rightNow, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all the things we claim.Let us explain. Before we go any further, let us clarify what DSST Secrets is not. Don't waste your money. Poorly written with punctuation and grammatical errors. Some of the practice test questions are essay; why? The DSST for Statistics is all multiple choice. If you are really teaching for the test, why have practice questions in a completely different format? This was no help at all. I think it actually set me back a little. What really helped me was YouTube lectures by Larry Green of Lake Tahoe Community College. My $$ would have been better spent on coffee while watching these lectures instead of this book which will now take up space in my house and serve no other purpose.

This is literally the worst book I have ever purchased. I would not at all recommend it. It is confusing and full of irrelevant equations and proofs that are not in the slightest helpful for the exam. Even the practice test is an unrealistic representation of what the true exam would include. If you are thinking of purchasing this item do yourself a favor, save some money, and find a better resource that will actually explain concepts and prepare you for the exam. I used an AP statistics book which was much more time consuming but a great deal more helpful. This book is already overpriced but the content makes it utterly worthless. There are much better review options (probably anything would be better) than this poorly written study guide.

I passed the exam using this book. I think this book covers at least 75% of the material. You need 70% to pass. So if you study, you should be good.

This book is very confusing and does not explain the concepts well for somebody to try and pick up statistics in order to take the DSST Statistics exam. I gave this book a try, and got very frustrated after the first 5 pages. Things were not explained well and made it harder to learn what I needed to know. I ended up going back into my old statistics book from college where all the concepts were with well laid out explanations and examples. After studying my textbook (which probably took longer because of the "fluff" that these books claim to take out), I gave this book a try again to just review to see if I missed anything. Again, I just got confused because the sections are not laid out very well, and equations are thrown at you without any explanations of their used variables. As for the test questions at the back of the book, they are also useless. The DSST (at least at the moment I am writing this review) consists of 94 multiple choice questions which you need to complete in 2 hours, which breaks down to spending about 1 minute per question. A few of the questions represent the type of question that would show up in the test, but the rest would take too long to calculate out or make you draw something and answer in a long winded response, which is not representative of the test at all and would not prepare you mentally time wise.I did pass my test, and with a pretty high score too. But I did it with the help of my old college statistics textbook, and paying for some practice exams off the DSST practice exam site and the Petersons practice exams. I WOULD NOT recommend this book to anyone looking to start the exam prep for this subject and would recommend getting a textbook that teaches you the principles of statistics and some practice exams that are actually representative of the questions that will be asked. It will be a pricier option, but you will get more out of it and have an easier time learning the concepts.

I bought this book and literally studied it for only four days and passed my test on my first try with an awesome score (86%) well worth the money!!

I purchased the DSST Principles of Supervision Exam study guide. I am finding very useful and would rate it a strong "5" on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest. The study guide is broken down into easy sections making it easy to read and retain.

The practice test was helpful but the text was not. Future editions should be better edited, better organized, and written more clearly.

Good/relevant info! Worth the purchase since I passed my exam!

Mandela: A Critical Life, by Tom Lodge

From Publishers Weekly

Nelson Mandela is perhaps the world's most revered living political figure for his role in transforming South Africa into a true democracy. In this illuminating bio, University of Limerick professor Lodge (Politics in South Africa) shows how Mandela's struggle for equality brought him to prominence. Though Mandela is hardly lacking biographers, Lodge makes an important contribution with his argument that Mandela's appeal rests on his ability to personify his political beliefs. Mandela's politics, which emphasize a mix of authority, empathy and respect for all people, are mirrored by his actions and behavior toward everyone he's come in contact with, thereby allowing his personal grace and dignity to be a political gesture. According to Lodge, Mandela's magnanimity serves as a model for a new kind of citizenship, one that embraces difference and the messiness of democracy without sacrificing the gentlemanly restraint Mandela associated with English political institutions. Lodge is careful to give Mandela an assertive role in this process, showing how he cultivated his own life story and his status as a martyr for justice in order to hasten the coming of democracy to his country. Vivid descriptions of the daily horrors of apartheid and the men and women around Mandela, such as his ex-wife Winnie and the troubled F.W. de Klerk, reveal the complicated world that Mandela ultimately and triumphantly managed to change. 17 b&w photos not seen by PW. From Booklist

For those who want much more than the view of Mandela as a global public hero, this biography combines a chronological account of his life with dense critical analysis of his political and personal roles. Lodge is a well-known scholar of South African history, and he draws on a wealth of testimonies, letters, and interviews from a wide range of sources, as well as the acclaimed authorized biographies, including Antony Sampson's Mandela (1999). Of course Lodge also draws extensively on Mandela's best-selling memoir, Long Walk to Freedom (1994), even while pointing out that "autobiography is not always good history." Then there are the recent news events, including Mandela's commitment to combating the AIDS pandemic and how that effort became tragically personal when his son died of the illness. One question raised is how much the messianic image was carefully crafted. The analysis in no way belittles Mandela; rather, it humanizes the man who, after 27 years in prison, led his country in a nonviolent transition to democracy. The book "Mandela: A Critical Life" is a 2006 biography of Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa. Written by author Tom Lodge, this book chronicles the early years, life, and reign of Mandela. While brief, the book contains a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of Mandela in a broad political sense. This biography contains a wealth of information about Mandela, as well as the South African political climate in the Twentieth Century. This review will seek to assess the scholarly value of Lodge’s book by exploring both the strengths and weaknesses in this biography of Mandela.Strengths:Perhaps strongest of all in Mandela is Lodge’s powerful use of studied and scholarly content. Reading the biography, it is clear that Lodge is very comfortable with his working knowledge not only of Mandela himself but of the politics of South Africa and the rest of the world during Mandela’s time. The book begins with a list of abbreviations to act as a reference for the reader before it dives directly into Mandela’s birth year of 1918. As "Mandela" progresses, Lodge shows why the abbreviation list was so crucial to include at the start: apartheid-era South African politics were a complex and volatile mix of organizations, governing bodies, and movements. Lodge guides the reader deftly through the confusing and sometimes intimidating mix of players and groups Mandela had to work with and against to achieve freedom for all South African people. At just over 200 pages, "Mandela" is a consolidated and concise biography. This element is in part a strength, as Lodge does not become embroiled in events at the periphery of Mandela’s story. Rather, Lodge makes a beeline through the life of Mandela hitting all the significant highs, lows, battles, and milestones along the way. Lodge avoids the distraction of introducing tangential information not immediately pertinent to Mandela’s maneuver through apartheid and into leading South African democracy. In this way, the author dispenses with the fluff that can often bog-down biographies of renowned leaders of Mandela’s stature. While the biography is concise, Lodge makes effective inclusion of references that the reader can utilize to further explore Mandela’s life. Strong is Lodge’s use of scholarly citations within "Mandela". Fifty-seven different references are listed at the end of "Mandela," with an additional section for further reading included also. Rather than craft a narrative, Lodge instead chose to approach his subject matter from the perspective of an academic. This style allows the reader to utilize the book as a launching pad into supplementary study of Mandela with ease.Weaknesses:Distinct among the weaknesses in "Mandela" is that it presumes a background of knowledge of 20th Century South African history. While the biography is well-researched and concisely distilled, the information Lodge presents is so densely packed that the reader might get the sense that comprehension of the work is contingent on having studied some of the material prior. In my reading of the book, I found myself constantly referencing the list of abbreviations and resorting to querying search engines to clarify some of the content. For example, the African National Congress (ANC) is mentioned in passing on the second page of the book. Lodge provides little context as to what this body did or how integral it would be in Mandela’s story. I found myself researching the ANC on my own before returning to the book. If the reader is not one to commit to following up on information that is not thoroughly explained, the reader may come away with an incomplete understanding of the dynamics Lodge explores in this book. Also at issue in this biography is its brief, surface-level exploration of Mandela. Lodge does little to examine the intimate details of Mandela’s personal life. This dynamic creates a seemingly hollow image of Mandela, characterizing him as a thoughtful ideologue and revolutionary, but not humanizing him in any compelling way. Early in the book, Lodge writes: “separated from his family Mandela learned early to repress outward shows of emotion." It is at this juncture that Lodge edges away from addressing the more visceral and emotional side of Mandela and chooses to focus almost exclusively on Mandela’s public, rather than private, management of his emotion. This biography would have benefited from humanizing Mandela and creating more of a connection between the reader and the South African president.Final Thoughts:Overall, "Mandela" is an extraordinary, detailed account of Mandela’s early life and journey to the South African presidency. While light on information regarding Mandela’s personal life, the depiction of his political career and imprisonment is conveyed in great detail. Lodge does well to give a striking and comprehensive perspective on how Mandela rose to power against daunting odds. At times the book can become bogged down under the heft of all the organizations and players Mandela worked with and against, and it would behoove the reader to have an existing understanding of South African apartheid-era politics prior to reading it. However, Lodge does provide ample opportunities for further research via his extensive citations. "Mandela" had a few weaknesses, but despite these minor flaws, it was a quick read and a valuable resource.

This book gives an in depth account of the actions of Mr. Mandela's political associations with groups and people in power during his entire life. Although I am not familiar with most of the organizations, because I have not studied the history I am fascinated. Mandela's life was complex, and his status as a member of a "royal" family enabled him access to jobs and positions that could not otherwise be obtained. He was not always the est qualified for his positions in political groups, but he was well respected and seen as a man of honor. His personal contact with the people which gave him more insight. His imposing appearance and reputation opened doors to make a difference. I would have rated it with 5 stars if the book was better organized in time sequences. It is a very good book especially if one knows more about African political history. I believe he was a hero to Affica, a great man.

Still reading but I love what I've read so far, very memorable. Mandela is a great man he did what he was meant to do, change a nation and free his people.

More of a scholarly treatment of his life than an easy-read feel-good book. Very detailed treatment of his early tribal life and education.

This book reads more like a history book -- no story, just fact after fact. At least as far as I got into it. Not entertaining at all.

This biography is quite long, slow-moving, and dry. Much of it is about what seem to me to be obscure political situations in a country about which I knew very little, so i must admit that large portions of it were a bit boring for me. It is clearly well researched, and there were personal parts of the book that I have found interesting, especially Mandela's relationship with Winnie, his wife, and with some of the other important figures in South Africa. I am not yet finished with this book, so maybe I shouldn't be reviewing it yet, but I must say so far it is not "grabbing my attention" as I had hoped it would. It is very scholarly but is loaded with enough unusual names and people whom I had never heard of before, so I am finding myself "plugging along" in an effort to finish it. The section on Mandela's stay on Robben Island is perhaps the most interesting so far.

I got lost in the "corrections" to other biographies of Mandela with which I was not familiar, and abandoned the effort to continue reading

Mandela's convictions and commitment can not be presented to the world too many times. We still need to learn from the credibility of a 'critical life' lived well.

Glad to have it my my library

Another example of excellence from "The New Cambridge Shakespeare (NCS)". NOTE, however, that this volume presents exclusively what is usually lumped as "The narrative poems" - i.e., it does NOT include the full set of sonnets ( which appear in a separately edited volume of the NCS series). As a value to the student/customer, therefore is this tradeoff: NCS covers here a smaller portion of the Shakespeare canon than the alternative from Oxford (ed. by Colin Burron, 2002, ISBN 019281933X ), but NCS can therefore offer larger typeface; larger and better quality paper. In this NCS edition, editor Roe provides helpful background material on each of the poems [Venus, Lucrece, Phoenix & Turtle, Lover's Complaint, and Passionate Pilgrim (*partially* attributable to Shakspeare) ]. The length and depth of discussion of each poem's introduction is not as great as one usually finds for an edition of, say, The Sonnets; but these poems have not stirred so much controversy or confusion either among the reading public or in academic analysis. The poems are (at least on the surface) much more readable and "accessible" to the general reader than are the sonnets. Roe's thorough annotations on each page of text clarify unusual or ambiguous words; they also raise intriguing issues about Shakespeare's art and agenda in suggestive writing with multiple levels of meaning. Both this NCS edition by Roe and the Burrow Oxford edition were released too early to benefit from fascinating new insights into the ever-puzzling bantam of this flock: The Phoenix and the Turtle. For the compelling evidence that this long-locked enigma of the canon is an eulogy to two Elizabethan Catholic martyrs, the reader will need to turn to a Times Literary Supplement issue from April of this year. For most of the controversies surrounding these poems, I'll risk claiming that there have been few critical revelations between the publication of this excellent 1993 NCS edition and now; so (excepting the 2003 TLS article mentioned above) it remains satisfyingly current. For reading pleasure and thoughtful study of these masterpieces, I think you'll be most pleased to own this Cambridge edtion.

"Venus and Adonis" is Shakespeare's first published work, 199 stanzas of sesta rima (a quatran with a couplet) with an ababcc rhyme scheme. Venus chases and detains Adonis to woo him but does not win his love. In fact, Adonis actually rejects her love. He goes off to hunt and is soon killed by a boar. The poem has eloquent set speeches and beautiful landscapes. "The Rape of Lucrece" is Shakespeare's epic poem in rhyme royal of the story of the rape of a Roman lady which led to the overthrow of Tarquin rule in Rome and the establishment of the Republic. "The Phoenix and the Turtle" is a short (67 lines) allegorical elegy. "The Passionate Pilgrim" is a collection of twenty poems, only five of which are clearly by Shakespeare (although a few others may be as well). Number XI is possibly by Bartholemew Griffin. Numbers VIII and XX are by Richard Barnefield (and possibly No. XIX). The well-known No. XIX is probably by Christopher Marlow. The last stanza to XIX is by Sir Walter Raleigh. "Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Music" is the title to the second part of "The Passionate Pilgrim." And, "A Lover's Complaint" is a poem in rhyme-royal (ababbcc) about a maiden who complains of her seduction by an unworthy young man.

I've always loved the Bard's plays. Something moved me to pick up this copy of his early poems. Man! Really gets you thinking about the themes of love, jealousy, honor that surface throughout the plays! I recommend the introductory material, too -- gives lots of insights into how to ponder Will's motives in publishing early under his own name. But beware: it raises more questions than it answers.

Shakespeare is at his best in this poem. At his best as for the subject : a raped virtuous wife who cannot go over the stain and cannot even utter the name of the rapist because she does not see his crime first, hence her vengeance second, but she only sees her crime first, hence her punishment second, and she commits suicide in front of everyone. At his best in the contradictions he brings in the treatment of his subject : Lucrece is not able to understand that rape is a crime on the side of the rapist, and not a fault on the side of the victim, but, and there Shakespeare is great, Roman society, and probably English society too, at the time but also today, will not accept her explanation if she does not consider herself as absolutely guilty of the crime she was the victim of. A woman is never accepted as clean and white if she is raped, she keeps some guilt in the eye of society, be it only to have « incited » or « caused » the rape by her being enticing, beautiful and desirable. In this society, the Roman society, but also ours, the woman is always, somewhere, even if she goes to court and gets the rapist in jail, the cause of the crime, hence the one responsible, at least partly, for the crime. Shakespeare does a pretty good job at showing this unescapable dilemma for a woman. And this appears clearly in the treatment of Tarquin's banishment in exactly one concluding line. What is banishment when compared to death in mental torture ? But Shakespeare is also at his best in his poetry, in his poetical style, in his brilliant use of the language to enchant us with music, the music of words, sounds, meanings, and all other musics you can imagine and find in this poem. I will suggest everyone to study in fine details the section going from line 925 to line 1035, what I call the « time » soliloquy. It is absolutely marvellous and brilliant, and what's more, it is extremely modern, even if it is fully Renaissance. On this subject, time, the Renaissance was particularly prolix, even verbose, but Shakespeare rises over time into some eternity by the way he composes the rhythm and the harmony of this brilliant piece. It becomes timeless and should be studied by all people to finally understand that time is cruel but that life is even more cruel if we do not accept to go along and away when necessary with time. Time becomes a friend in a way, and not an enemy because it knows how to liberate you from life, suffering and useless aging when aging does not bring anything any more except torture and humiliating degrading and ever increasing inferiority, declining and vacuity.Dr Jacques CIOULARDEAU
