This volume is a revision of a previous book, which I haven't read. In this new version, the author and publisher have two somewhat conflicting goals: One, to create an accessible and very interesting volume. Success!! I enjoyed it and learned a lot. However, the apparent goal to create an academic volume on bodhisattvas competes with accessibility. It may be frustrating for the reader who either cannot or doesn't care to get into the weeds about the 35 manifestations of Avalokitesvara or the 10 vows of another bodhisattva. But the reader should not be discouraged. She should scan the weedy sections to get a taste of the beautiful complexities, undaunted by the details. But I will keep this book nearby so I can find these details if and when I need them. Dharmas are boundless. My bodhisattva vow is to be teachable.

I was introduced to several new, yet widely popular, bodhisattvas. And I learned volumes about those bodhisattvas I thought I already knew -- especially cultural practices associated with each across the broad spectrum of Asian expressions.

Compelling. Well written.

Great story,great art

The Good: I thought this was a good companion piece to Civil War II. Unlike the miniseries which just portrays Carol as a stone cold b**ch, you get to see Carol's side of things. She's actually doing more than just blindly trusting Ulysses visions and is aware of the quagmire she's headed to. If this side of Carol had shown up more in Civil War II, it would have been a much better book where you didn't know which side to fall on. Instead it was slanted towards Iron Man from the beginning. The Bad: The Master of the World has always been a cheesy villain and that hasn't changed here. The Ugly: I've never been a fan of Kris Anka's art and that opinion hasn't changed with this volume.

After the Fantastic First outing as Captain Marvel (AKA Carol Danvers) wherein she became the leader of Alpha Flight Earth's First Defense against non cosmic extraterrestrial threats, we join her just as the events of Civil War 2 start. Now I have not been 100% keeping up with the Civil War 2 saga so this is one of my first forays in to the story. Carol, after being tipped off by an Inhuman who can see the future, is involved with taking down the Mad God Titan who kills someone close to Carol. The rest of the trade involves Captain Marvel using the abilities of this Inhuman to predict and be their for future disasters and Crimes, many times stopping them before they occur. What follows is a storyline where Captain Marvel must walk the fine line of handling these events and dealing with many ethical questions, ie can you arrest and prosecute someone for a crime they haven't committed. The story handles the issues well and any excuse to see more of Puck is welcome. Thanks for Reading True Believers. hey I need to do that at least once in these reviews.

Needs more Chewie. And DeConnick.

Old friends face off as bitter enemies in an event that will change Captain Marvel's life forever! As a new Civil War erupts, Carol Danvers finds herself at the very forefront of the conflict. But when tragedy hits too close to home, how far will she go to fight for what she believes in? As the rift with Iron Man grows ever deeper, Carol and the Alpha Flight recruit more to their cause: changing the future to protect the present. As wins mount up on Carol's side, she knows her mission is the right one - the only trouble is, not everyone agrees. Carol Danvers truly is one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and this is the story that proves it. It's Captain Marvel at her finest, in the fight of her life! plus we see carol fighting one of iron man's old foes thundersword who has been set up by one of carol's own superiors

In the previous book, Colonel Carol Danvers takes a post as the head of the Alpha Flight Space Station, an interplanetary venture designed to be earth's first line of defense against alien invasion. Nothing goes as planned when she arrives. She has to deal with a saboteur from within and aliens who are trying destroy the station and earth because they believe them to be Kree or Kree collaborators after they awaken an ancient defunct ship that reacts badly to the Kree powers in Captain Marvel's body and sends the aliens a signal to come aid them against the Kree. The fact that she saves the world from this catastrophe wins her fans in big and small places worldwide. She goes back to being the boss of Alpha Flight, but she has come across the knowledge and has met Ulysses a young Immortal who can predict the future. Tony Stark also knows about him but wishes to further test his predictions before actually using him. On one of his trial predictions for Tony Stark Rhodey, War Machine, goes out to prevent something from happening and gets killed in the process and Tony shuts down and goes against Ulysses for not seeing that Rhodey would die. He tells Ulysses that it is his fault Rhodey is dead and Ulysses shuts down refusing to share his visions with anyone.Danvers believes in utilizing him and convinces the Alpha Flight's Board of Governors to use the weapon that the Inhuman have that can predict the future without telling them that it is a living being. On the board who gives her trouble is Ambassador Gyrich who has his own ideas of what Alpha Flight should be doing. But she gets lots of support from Black Panther who has mixed feelings about it and Ambassador Phillippe Beaulieu of Canada who shares her vision.Alpha Flight Squadron (Puck, Sasquatch, Aurora) team up with members of the Ultimates (Ms. America Chavez, Blue Marvel, Spectrum, Black Panther) to take down bad people and prevent bad things from happening right as they are about to happen or in the beginning stages of happening and reducing the damage. But certain Governers want her to add criminals to the database and even those who are people of interest and you can guess who that Governor is.This wasn't what she had in mind when she set this up. It's starting to get out of hand and Ulysses is in danger by someone who knew about him and that leaves only the people on her squad. Who has turned traitor? I love this comic series. This book is setting up a grudge match between Captain Marvel and Ironman. The two are on opposite sides of what to do about Ulysses and both are grieving for Rhodey in their own separate way, instead of together as Rhodey would have wanted. This comic pushes the limit to what Alpha Flight's mission was supposed to be. Also, there's the giant question of what to do with the information you get ahead of time and are trying to prevent. In another comic, Hawkeye kills Bruce Banner right before he can turn into the Hulk and kill people, though no one else saw the signs of him turning into the Hulk. Maybe too much information can be a bad thing. This is a terrific comic that really makes you think and I highly recommend it.

For those wanting to understand the Eritrean - Ethiopian conflict of the 1960s through 2000, Dan Connell's book is a great place to start (and possibly finish). Connell is a journalist. He covered the war between these two African countries as an embedded reporter with both the ELF, (Eritrean Liberation Front), the original guerrilla group that haunted the Americans at Kagnew Station in the '60 and '70s, and the EPLF (Eritrean People's Liberation Front) that became victorious. Connell walked and occasionally drove the countryside with these groups, assessing their structure and mode of operation, and their military tactics. Under fire at times, he spoke and lived with the activists, capturing their thoughts and hopes. One of these was the EPLF's leader, Isaias Afewerki, the guerrilla who became Eritrea's president (and remains so). His detail is compelling and his writing style is highly readable. The book is a lasting record of a little-covered war and is a tribute to journalism as it should be practiced.

This is very informative book about the longest and costliest civil war in Africa, It is a compilation of narratives based on-location first hand observation and not on hearsay from third party story tellers. It is well written book.

This work is a clear account of how the Eritrean people stood up for freedom and great personal cost. It recounts the amazing story of their resiliency in the face of great odds, their innovation, and their love for freedom and independence that finally led to a free country. The story provides a compelling understanding of why the Eritrean people and government today are determined to find their own pathway into the future instead of turning over control to another countries vision for their future.

Perfect

Incredibly written!. Dan Connell lived in the region and was present during battles in which(battles) he describes in detail giving vivid descriptions. Against all odds is smoothly written and Dan Connell captures Eritrean culture and attitudes very well in this book!.

This was the first book that i bought one a recent trip to Eritrea and although it may be bias in favor of Eritrea, and the EPLF it is rightly so to counter act all of the Eithiopian propraganda that the west gets. this is a first hand acount of what the author saw for himself during the 30 year conflict with Ethiopia. it is a great read with a lot of the authors own feeligs and stories. this is a great way to get away from the dry military history of, this tank went there, the army moved there, this division had this big gun here style. I bet if you read this book you will not be able to explain african politics in short little articals like one would find in newspapers and weeklys. the reader will find that the world and africa are more compicated then we like to belive, and that africans, and in this case Eritreans can make a nation with out the heavy hand of western help.

There's not much material out there on Africa's longest running civil war, which is depressing for newcomers to the history of this conflict. Of what does exist, Connell's narrative is a valuable look into life with the Eritrean rebels seeking to split from a brutish Ethiopian state. In this book we find him getting strafed by Ethiopian jets, suffering through long desert hikes behind the lines, and reporting on the refugee situation. It is a fascinating look at the politics of rebel Eritrea and the collateral damage of warfare in the Horn of Africa. As he states at the beginning, Connell is sympathetic to the EPLF (Eritrean Popular Liberation Front). So other than high-level news reports, you don't get much consideration of what's going on outside rebel(EPLF)-occupied Eritrea. The account is quite one-sided, even against the other rebel groups operating in Eritrea. The EPLF was a Marxist-oriented revolutionary movement from the beginning. Much of the book is devoted to educating the reader on the EPLF's great progress in pulling off land reforms, sharing Maoist "political education" with the rural population, and teaching the worker exploitation inherent in capitalism. All of which can be skimmed and discarded, but it takes away from the main strength of the book: that he was one of only a few reporters on the ground to witness much of Africa's most bizarre conflict. I wanted to learn more about the offensives, why the Soviets got involved, and what was going on from a big picture level. Reading endless detail about EPLF comrades setting up farm cooperatives in rural villages was not terribly exciting. The definitive book on the Ethiopian/Eritrean war has not yet been written. But Connell's "Against All Odds" will give you insight into the struggles of the main leftist guerrilla group and their experience between 1977-1991.PS- For war buffs, this book is a little light on its treatment of the battles and the maps included reveal few details.

Being an Eritrean who was born and brought up in Europe, I got this book in an attempt to educate myself about the 30 year old guerilla movement that led to the independence of Eritrea. Dan Connell unravels the Eritrean liberation movement in a very personal and heartfelt way that goes beyond the hard facts of the military story that has been portrayed by so many before. In this book you encounter the average Eritrean and their story during the tough times of the war. Their commitment, dedication, tenacity and strong will power shines through and highlights the superhuman effort of the Eritrean people's David & Goliat struggle against its oppressor Ethiopia and the superpowers of the world (Soviet, US, Israel etc..)....Dan Connell has written a truly impressive book on the Eritrean struggle for freedom, based on years and years spent in the area during the war, this is an essential read about Black Africa's most ingenious society.

"[An] exacting look at gentrification in New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco and New York, exposing how large institutions-goverments, businesses, foundations-influence street-level processes that might appear as organic as the coffee shop's dark roast. ... How to Kill a City elucidates the complex interplay between the forces we control and those that control us."―New York Times Book Review"Moskowitz is a talented and impassioned writer...[H]e pokes, prods and listens. He finds holes in official stories and gifted storytellers among people who have been steamrolled."―San Francisco Chronicle"Movingly conveys [gentrification's] emotional and sometimes tragic toll as he highlights its stark racial realities in Detroit, San Francisco, New York and New Orleans."―Washington Post"Gentrification takes a community's personal tragedy, loss and destruction, and monetizes it. Understanding how this happens, and how individuals may unwittingly find themselves a part of it is what makes Moskowitz's book so important. It isn't a lesson about what happened, it's a warning about what is happening now."― Truthout "How to Kill a City is a convincing and persuasive argument that the U.S. has a serious problem with affordable housing that is not going away any time soon."―Booklist"Moskowitz...pulls no punches in his depiction of gentrification...He paints a vivid and grim picture of the future of American cities."―Kirkus"A fascinating analysis of late-stage gentrification in which corporate control of cities renders them uninhabitable to most people. Showing how gentrifiers exploit 'someone else's loss' as a consequence of long histories of racist policy, Peter Moskowitz calls for a global movement against this 'new form of segregation,' defining housing as a human right rooted in community instead of real estate profit."―Sarah Schulman, author of Gentrification of the Mind and The Cosmopolitans"Peter Moskowitz offers a smartly written and fiercely logical indictment of city governments for selling out longtime residents to aggressive developers and rich investors, and calling it growth. This book is a wake-up call to communities to say no to state-sponsored gentrification and join together to resist their own demise."―Sharon Zukin, author of Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places"A forceful critique of gentrification and its impact on disempowered members of American society."―Library Journal"When it comes to housing and urban development, as with other aspects of American life, Moskowitz makes clear that the heft of one's purse and the color of one's skin are determinative. How to Kill a City is an indictment of a system that places making a home for capital above making homes for people."―Santa Barbara Independent

There is little doubt that this book is well written and thoroughly researched, but your opinion of it will largely come down to your world view. Your answers to questions like "Is housing a right?" or "Should everyone be able to live in a city?" will determine whether you will get on board with the author's cause.I came to this book from the perspective of someone living in a blighted second tier city in the deep south, while hearing my friends living in New York and Portland decry the evils of gentrification. These are very different urban situations, with one struggling from a lack of capital, while the other is being forever changed by a "wave of capital". As someone who sees neo-liberal policies and urban development generally as a good thing, this book helped broaden my perspective. The book is written as a panacea for all urban areas, and the author seems to assume that everyone will share his view. It's important to remember that every housing market is different.I recommend this book, but I encourage readers to go deeper and read alternative views like Richard Florida.

The book does a good job of putting words around the complicated feelings and impact of gentrification. Though slightly repetitive at times, the case studies cited are good examples of the drivers of gentrification, as well as the impact on local residents. The five page scathing critique of suburbs is worth the price of the book. If you care about learning about the tangible effects of the US’s decades long history of racist housing policy and rising income inequality, then this book is a must read.

Last year on a cable channel EPIX, they had a series called America Divided and a segment was done on the housing crisis in New York. I believe this book is a continuation of sorts on that series. Case in point: a woman lived in an apartment building that was being renovated all around her. The only thing between a young man operating a jack hammer and her wall was a sheet of plastic. I could not believe my eyes. She had to put up with the incredible noise and dust swirling all around her. The landlord wanted her out and in spite of her living there, he was determined to get rid of her and her grandson one way or another. Since then I have seen gentrification begin right In my own small city and luxury apartments are being built but no low income dwellings are even considered. Recently in my city in Central Florida someone posted a picture taken of a bald eagle family gazing at the destruction of their homestead. Their nest was probably among the trees that were being destroyed to make way for yet another business or growth proposal. A few years ago a protest was held in an area near downtown Orlando where the people chanted "where are we supposed to go". Gone are the neighborhoods that I remember where everything you needed was almost within walking distance If not, a short bus trip would take you there. I guess money is more important than community. But where will it end? The middle class is virtually being destroyed daily and a luxury apartment is just that - a luxury few will be able to afford. We will be left with quiet enclaves where there will be designer shops, quaint coffee houses and nothing else. No kids in the streets, no neighborhoods, just playgrounds for the rich. Meanwhile the poor are thrust further and further into the suburbs with limited services. I read in scripture that Jesus said the poor will always be among us, but He didn't mean that we are to abandon them and we all will be judged for it. I don't want to hear Him say I put the interest of the rich before those who need our help. I am sure He won't be pleased. The future looks grim.

Very informative book but gave little hope for ways to afford change. It did help me recognize the progress our city is making toward these results which is quite discouraging. If you're want to learn the practices cities create and support that causes the death of the historic cultures of large cities, this is your book. We read this as a neighborhood group and it was a great springboard for education and information.

Excellent book! For anyone who wants to hear about the ups and downs on gentrification. The book also gives a history on the idea, what its goals actually are, how some see the good and some see the bad, stats and allows you to come to your own conclusion

Many reasons to like this book--it's well written and organized and is clearly based on Anna's lived experience on her homestead in Virginia. It's not theory--she walks the walk. I liked that she included commentaries from her blog readers living in a wide variety of parts of the US (Portland; Missouri; Texas) to give perspectives from other biomes--I doubt I'll run into crayfish holes in my arid California garden! It's not encyclopedic but when she thinks the reader would need more information she cites specific books or web resources for that. Intriguing surprises: she's not much for traditional companion planting and explains why, and outlines how succession planting and trap crops can work in her own experience. She also isn't big on the use of chickens, ducks or other domestic animals as pest controllers in most gardens and cites the reasons, although she uses a chicken tractor in a very limited way. She outlines why she (and many of her readers) prefers to use wild predators instead, and how elegantly it can work. The book is heavily illustrated with color photos from her own and other contributors' gardens. I think what I learned the most from was seeing how her brain works--from reading this text you can see her example of using careful observation, research, and trial and error to fine tune moving her garden forward each season. As a novice gardener I'm glad I bought it and will check out her other books.

Great book for all gardeners who fight battle with bugs in the garden. I love her writing and easy to understand style. I love her photographs, they clearly show what she is talking about. Anna and her husband grow their own food in Virginia. You get her personal story and her personal battle with bugs. I can connect with her through her personal journey to get rid of pests in the garden. Anna teaches us to identify the bad bugs first. She uses a Mother Earth News map and survey showing the worst bugs in each region. She gives a couple of resources for learning about the bugs in your garden, her favorite book and an online resource. Anna gives us the worst bugs, how to promote good bugs, pollinators, ecosystem bugs, box turtle friends who eat slugs and snails, letting nature take it's course, outthinking the bugs, choosing resistant plant varieties, using row covers, keeping plants healthy, hands on bug control-yes picking them off and eating blemished fruit. She gives all this great information and writes it in an entertaining style along with photographs from her garden. This book is a treat! Also at the end you will find a preview of another of her books: Homegrown Hummus and Cover Crops. Every gardener needs a copy of this great garden book - I just love it! Get your copy today!

This book is so valuable for a gardener! It not only well-written, the photos are many and excellent for identifying pests. Once again this author has written a keeper of a book. This one should be kept by every gardener. Identifying pests becomes so easy and she gives ways of controlling the pests with natural means or safe remedies and the book gives info on good and bad creatures in your garden. Altho mainly for vegetable and fruit gardening there is also good info on flower pests. She writes as if she is sitting across from you and she shares what did or didnt work for her. Love it!

The Naturally Bug-Free Garden gives sage advice about how to garden without the use of pesticides or poisons. Writing from her own experience and research, the author provides extremely valuable techniques for dealing with many garden pests. She uses, not only gardening but ecological and environmental practices to thwart enemies of the plants. Her practices match my own experiences as a chemical-free gardener. Anna Hess shows how to attract beneficial bugs to the garden, tells about plant methods of self-defense, explains the role of nutrition in plant protection, and how plant rotation can contribute to keeping bad bugs at bay. Her fluent and humorous writing style captivates the reader while providing great insights for gardeners at every experiential level. This book covers many more topics than those mentioned here. I highly recommend this book to anyone who does anything in a garden! There are so many gems of wisdom in this book!

If you are a gardner who is interested in finding out what are good pest and bad pest I highly recommend this book.. I have found it very interesting.I have found that there are good insects to control the bad ones and you do not need to use poisons on flowers and vegetables to keep you healthy. I do Highly Recommend it to anyone interested in being a serious gardner.

This was and is a very information filled book. But I feel let down because I simply wanted the book to take longer to read through. It is a book worthy of any one looking to improve there foundational knowledge of food growing almost naturally.

Love knowing about what I am up against with my first garden the book would have been a five star if it had some pointers about matching plants together to help like growing cucumbers over your squash stops the borer. But in all worth getting:)

What can I say, I have become partial to Ms. Hess. Great guide with a lot of ideas on getting those buggers out. As a natural homesteader who prefers not to use chemicals at all, this is great. Good work again!

#137,425 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm a huge fan of V.C, Andrews actual work - the Dollanganger series, the Casteel series, the original My Sweet Audrina. I endured the ghostwriter's work all the way to Gemini series, but gave up since each series had become even more poorly written, recycled, and unresearched than the last. Still, I was such a fan of the original My Sweet Audrina that I gave this a chance and even pre-ordered. Well, if you're a fan of the ghostwriter's latter works, then this book is for you.Besides the fact that the book was once again peppered with inconsistencies, something that I thought could be avoided with only one book to reference, the largest inconsistency were the characters. They were so different that they weren't even echoes of the original ones and the only similarity they had were the names. The detailed writing and intricate storytelling of Ms. Andrews wasn't even attempted at let alone accomplished. Even the watered down Lifetime movie of My Sweet Audrina held more suspense and intrigue than this sequel. It was merely a set up, a bunch of dragged out filler in the middle, and then a hugely predictable ending which was most likely done as some lackluster attempt to connect it to the original story. The whole thing was just awful and not in the guilty pleasure way.

SPOILER WARNING: This review consists only of spoilers. Can't discuss the book without them. Read on at your risk.CONTENT WARNING: Racism, sexism, abuse, rape, and SO MUCH ABLEISM. Ableism in almost every chapter.Whatever Simon & Schuster paid for this book, it would be a miracle if WHITEFERN earned out its advance. Even if you loved reading MY SWEET AUDRINA, I don't wish its sequel upon anyone.Remember Audrina Adare's younger sister, Sylvia? Her condition hasn't been specified, but pretty much is never described without a slur or ableist speech against her. Though Audrina narrates, WHITEFERN's plot is very Sylvia-focused.And it's bad. Really bad. Sexual abuse, rape, and impregnation. But it's presented as if "sweet Sylvia" consents to it all, even though big sister Audrina can see the abuse and exploitation. Outside of the novel, there may be discussions regarding people with an intellectual or developmental disability and consent, but V. C. Andrews is definitely NOT the author to explore the issue in a respectful manner. Far from it.Why did the publisher think this was a good idea?!

Why, oh WHY did they even bother with this book if they aren't going to even fact check the first one? As a diehard VC Andrews fan, MSA was one of my favorites. I was excited for Whitefern, even though the CD series angered me to no end. I figured since there was only ONE book to reference, it would be a simple task to carry on with the story.Soooooo many inconsistencies!! For one, there are many references made about Arden's mother Billie being married to Audrina's father Damien. They were never married. A single reading of MSA would make that crystal clear. The characters were completely different than the first book. Arden was an insufferable jerk the entire book. In the first book, he had a conscience. This one, he's borderline sociopathic. They just need to stop with her original material and focus on new stories and characters.

This sequel to the Audrina series was too awful for words. I made it about a third of the way through and stopped reading. Don't waste your money on this loser even if you read My Sweet Audrina. V.C Andrews could write. Her ghostwriter cannot!

Before I read this book, I was joking around about it with a fellow V.C Andrews fan about how the story would unfold. It seriously HURT to find out that my joking was very much a reality. I'm sorry but this book was garbage. Melodramatic, predictable and boring! Years have passed and Audrina is now a good little house wife to Arden who has blossomed into a chauvinistic, arrogant pig. How do you stay with someone who throws the fact that you sexually assaulted right into your face?! It made no sense. The dialogue was crap. Every scene with Arden has him saying something too "out there" to be real. And Audrina's empty head is a boring cave of questions she never bothers to answer or solve for herself. "Hello?!" "Hello?!" "Is my husband really that much of a jerk?" YES. From about page 30, you guess what will happen (and it does). I'd have preferred it if she had done a Corrine and laced Arden's plum-sauce porkchops with a little extra something. Oh and the rest of the cast? Forgettable! It's like the author took bits and pieces of other V.C Andrews characters, blanched them and shoved them in here. Evil old woman? Check. Innocent, beautiful girl? Check. Dramatic pregnancy? Check. Oblivious mother figure? Check. I struggled to keep myself interested and finished quickly-not because it was good of course, but because I skipped whole paragraphs with oh so dull descriptions with a side of Audrina's idiocy. Maybe the shock therapy affected her after all poor thing... I loved the first book. It was haunting, frightening and beautiful in its own way. But this...? I'd ask for my money back but how about you, the author, keep the money and leave the original V.C Andrews characters we know and love blissfully alone.
