Review

New York Times bestseller “A breezily entertaining account. For Meltzer…this foray into nonfiction has a decidedly melodramatic flavor, rushing along in the present tense from one breathless, cliffhanging chapter to the next.” ―USA Today“The author extract what they can out of the historical record to tell a colorful story giving the reader a sense of Revolutionary-era Manhattan. The writing is punchy and the chapters are short.” ―Associated Press"[Meltzer and Mensch] bring a propulsive energy to the narrative―it can be difficult to create tension and suspense in a nonfiction book where the reader already knows how the story ends, but the authors do a great job keeping the reader turning the pages.... Nothing about the book is phoned in; the amount of research behind it is genuinely remarkable. The First Conspiracy is an excellent book, enthralling and beyond fascinating, and it's sure to delight both fans of thrillers and American history." ―NPR “Meltzer and Mensch have taken an obscure chapter of U.S. history and retold it as a thriller…they aim to make the past come alive for a modern audience, but readers who enter this literary wayback machine are in for a bumpy ride.” ―Newsday"Readers who like their histories full of twists, turns, and cliff-hangers will enjoy this romp through the Revolution." ―Booklist“In brisk, tense chapters, Meltzer [and] Mensch relate a tale of spies and treason, conspiracy and counterintelligence at the start of the colonists' war against Britain.... A lively political thriller.” ―Kirkus Reviews "This absolutely fascinating book brings to light an enthralling, deliberately hidden episode in American history, chronicling the machinations leading to war and the remarkable character of Washington himself. This is American history at its finest, a gripping story of spies, killers, counterfeiters, traitors―and a mysterious prostitute who may or may not have even existed. Anyone with an interest in American history will love this book." ―Douglas Preston, #1 bestselling author of The Lost City of the Monkey God“You need to read this book―the patriotic and daring untold story about George Washington and the real-life traitors who secretly tried to take him out. Just wait until you see how General Washington punishes those who cross him. Here’s why Brad Meltzer is America’s historian. Americans need to hear this incredible story.” ―Brian Kilmeade, cohost of Fox & Friends and New York Times bestselling author of Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans, George Washington's Secret Six, and Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pilots “History and mystery combine in this taut true-life thriller. Meltzer and Mensch write a page-turner with rich characters and compelling details that just so happens to be part of the real story about George Washington and a conspiracy against him. A joy to read!” ―Jake Tapper, CNN Anchor and bestselling author of The Hellfire Club"The First Conspiracy is a true mystery story that very few Americans know, written with a voice that beckons to be heard.” ―Joseph J. Ellis, author of the forthcoming American Dialogue: The Founding Fathers and Us“If you thought you knew everything about the American Revolution, here’s dispositive proof that you’ve been wrong. Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch have given us a powerful account of a conspiracy to assassinate George Washington on the eve of all-out war―a fascinating tale of spies and intrigue, of near-misses, and what-ifs. Read it!” ―Jon Meacham, author The Soul of America: The Battle for our Better Angels, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, and American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House"This story of skullduggery, bribery, espionage, and treason sheds new light on the beginnings of the American Revolution. It also highlights the importance of intelligence and counterintelligence in waging war, as the Patriots exposed and forestalled the plot and caused Washington to create his own highly successful intelligence service." ―James M. McPherson, author of The War That Forged a Nation and Pulitzer Prize-winner Battle Cry of Freedom

I received an Advance Reading Copy of The First Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer and John Mensch from the publisher (Flatiron Books) in exchange for an honest review. The First Conspiracy is scheduled for release on January 8, 2019.The First Conspiracy is not a novel, it is a glimpse into a piece of history. We are dropped into the months leading up to the Declaration of Independence and the war that it launches. The focus of this history is a group of men who are secretly associated with the British. This group of men has a plan. They are out to get George Washington. This story is told in third person, which makes sense for a history. The story jumps around in both place and time, following different people and their actions. Given that we are piecing together a conspiracy, the jumping made sense. What made less sense to me was the tense Meltzer chose to write in. This history is written in present tense. I think his goal was to make us feel a sense of urgency, make us feel tension and anxiety over how things were going to turn out. This did not work for me. Since this is a history, I knew from the beginning that the attempt to assassinate Washington was going to be unsuccessful. The choice of present tense just felt awkward. The down side to the jumping in time and space was that we never get a chance to really attach to any of the characters. While we see what individuals are doing, we don’t get close to any of them. This made it difficult for me to sink into the story. I felt very distant from the action and the people involved.I also struggled with the writing style Meltzer used. Meltzer is a bestselling author, who typically writes thrillers. I could see this in his approach to this history. His chapter lead ins and endings had the feel of what I see in thrillers. Again, this felt out of place to me. It felt as if he were trying to force a sense of excitement into the story, rather than mining and developing the intrigue that was inherent to this conspiracy tale. While this was an interesting story about a piece of history that I honestly did not know about, I did not love this book. I wanted to be immersed in this conspiracy, immersed in the plotting and intrigue. Instead, I was overly aware of the author and his stylistic devices.

In the US we are subject to sensational, yet dubious, newspaper headlines & web postings. Now we can add questionable “history books”The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington is based on nothing more than rumor & conjecture. The author provides only a handful of source facts and turns it into 410 pages of speculation and repetitive prose. In the books “Author’s Notes” Brad Meltzer writes about reaching out to historian Joseph Ellis who tells him that this topic will “…always be elusive” & Meltzer states “He was right”. Then the question begs, why try to write a book?

One can be forgiven for speculating as to what might have happened to our thirteen colonies if George Washington had been murdered in the conspiracy detailed in this excellent work by Brad Meltzer. What might be even more salient, however, is what America did become because the great man was NOT murdered. Much of what America has become is owed to those who stopped the plot to assassinate the father of our country.Imagine yourself as a writer. Now, assume you have stumbled across some disjointed information that indicates an attempt to kidnap or murder the one key figure in America's quest for self-governance. What would you do?Brad Meltzer probably has a little more backbone than most of us. As for myself, I might have entertained the thought to try writing a novel on the topic. With novels, people are more forgiving than with nonfiction. But, honestly, I probably would have given up after fifty or so pages. So, I bought Meltzer's book, including the Audible Whispersync edition so I could listen to it when actually reading was not possible. How was it?Excellent. From the get-go I was fascinated by the prospect, if not so thrilled with some of the early statements. What I mean is that, early on, (for just one example), Meltzer states:'...This small, inexperienced, poorly equipped group of soldiers needs to stand up to what is probably the biggest and most powerful military force in the world. By any normal measure, they don’t stand a chance—and Washington knows this, just as he knows that with every decision he makes, thousands of young soldiers’ lives could be lost...'Meltzer, Brad. The First Conspiracy (pp. 1-2). Flatiron Books. Kindle Edition. So, why does this bug me? Perspective. Through eight years of conflict, the total number who were killed by the fighting was 8,000. Yes, that is thousands, but is far less than one might suppose. When Meltzer stresses thousand of young soldiers lives could be lost, I imagine, readers are likely to conjure up far larger numbers in their minds.Yes, I know I am being a bit picky. I am merely trying to show how this otherwise terrific history falls short of being a great story for us today. The writing and editing are good.BOTTOM LINEI highly recommend this book for anyone interested in American colonial history. Remember to get the Audible edition and listen to it with you kids and/or parents.Four stars out of five.

Just finished Brad Meltzer’s latest novel “The First Conspiracy”. Instead of reading as a novel like his earlier books, it is a disjointed repetitive history book. In an attempt to make the book authentic, he uses quotes and turns around and rewrites the essence of quote. He keeps repeating the nature of his characters. I truly enjoyed his earlier books and was looking forward to this book. I am very disappointed with it.

In this enlightening and impressive examination of Islamic thought, Irfan Ahmad investigates a part of the Muslim world too often regarded as marginal but which ought to be recognized as central. Ahmad argues that Islam has its own form of religious criticism carried out by believing Muslims with reference to their own traditions. Will be of interest not only to those who study modern Islamic thought but also to scholars of religion and postcolonial studies and to anthropologists beyond area specialists." --Talal Asad, Is Critique Secular? This important and passionate book is filled with original ideas. Two of the most striking ones are that Enlightenment thought is deeply indebted to Christian thought, and that Islam has its own tradition of critique that precedes the Western idea of critique but continues to be marginalized in contemporary scholarly and public debate. A significant book for scholars of Islam, Europe, and the Enlightenment." --Arjun Appadurai, author of The Future as a Cultural FactProvocatively examines the relationship of the Islamic tradition to critique. This timely reflection on the ways in which reason, criticism, and reflexivity are not exclusive to the Enlightenment pointedly addresses how the practice of Westernized notions of critique are deeply constituted by and through political and anthropological contexts." --Ruth Mas, BGSMCS–Free University Berlin

Religion as Critique: Islamic Critical Thinking from Mecca to the Marketplace (Islamic Civilization and Muslim Networks)An excellent book with very compelling, and at times intellectually playful, arguments that challenge yet another conventional wisdom about religion in general and Islam in particular. “Can Islam ever accept higher criticism?” “If Islamic world is to go forward… it needs to face these uncomfortable questions and embrace the pain of doubt,” “rationality is gone,” “Islamic culture prohibits any criticism of Islamic traditions.” These statements, only to list a few, according to Ahmad, encapsulate some of the Western Orientalist tropes that represent Islamic traditions not only as devoid of critique, but also that Islam cannot reconcile itself with any form of critique. Such a conventional wisdom “has a longer genealogy in Western thought, which runs almost concurrently with Europe’s colonial expansion” (p.8).Central to the making of Islam as antithetical to the European Enlightenment is an ethnic project, avers Ahmad. Ahmad is very cautious, here, as he spells out his argument. That is because enlightenment/critique/reason, as upheld by followers of the Kantian tradition, is a synonym of universality rather than a specific ethnicity. What follows is a thought-provoking discussion about how Kant’s philosophy of reason is a security project. Drawing on Kant’s discussion on the Arab nomads, Ahamd contends that Kant’s aim was to protect and secure the boundary, which demarcates the Christian, enlightened rational European civilization from what he perceived as the danger of enthusiasm/zeal, fanaticism/sensuality the Prophet Mohammad (PUH) and Islam represented. It is against this discursively produced Islam as anti-critique that Ahmad situates his thesis. Focusing on Islam, Religion as Critique's overarching argument is; this: “departing from standard Enlightenment understanding, according to which religions, especially non-Protestant ones, could only be objects of critique, this book…theorizes religion as an important agent of critique, viewing Moses, the Buddha, Christ, Muhammad…and many others as critic par excellence” (p.xii). Drawing on ethnographic as well as literary sources, Ahmad takes his proposition further to argue that indeed Islam as a mode of religious criticism is practiced by ordinary Muslims, women, and men in everyday life. This is a very well written and an intellectually stimulating book, which offers thought-provoking arguments that will keep its reader engaged from beginning to the end. It is an important contribution to the fields of Islamic studies, anthropology, and philosophy. Certainly, it is an essential reading for scholars and students concerned about the future of Islamic traditions in an increasingly secularized world, where Islam continues to be represented as an antithesis to all that which is modern, rational and democratic to justify its relegation to the private if not banishing it all together.

I have always enjoyed folklore from any country. The history of the male lead interwoven with his life in Russia and childhood fairytales was intriguing. I enjoyed this story of two broken people who took a chance on hope and helped each other mend the broken parts of their heart.

I loved the story line and had to keep reading regardless of what else I needed to accomplish. Not the usual "fluff."

I loved this book so much that when I finished the last page, I went back to the beginning and ready it all again. I know it's a fairy tale but such a lovely HEA!!! This is definitely a "feel good" Christmas book.

Can we be too quick to judge, give too much credence to a first impression? Can we be our own worst critic and not give others a chance to love us? This book is about two seemingly damaged individuals who learn how love, if given a chance, can heal and wipe away their self-doubts to allow themselves to have happiness.

This is the best book I’ve read in a long time-it has culture, romance, mystery, beautiful music-everythingI look for in a novel!

I loved this story, a Christmas romance with lots of character. Set in London showing the wonderful sights and also the harsher reality for some people living there. A book that is full of heart.

Interesting story and the twist in the story that you do not see coming. Life is different for all of us and as the stories that shape our lives. Some darker than others. Lauren Westwood did a very good job showing this.

This book was really enjoyable to read. I luv'ed the caractures. It has you was and then ☺ I don't usually read this type of book but it was a lovely find for me to enjoy I was so happy and felt so 👍
