Chapter 1 Dark mists swirled around Darek as he made his way up a narrow pass into the Black Mountains of Krad. Rowena, daughter of the Zorian Chief Elder, followed a few steps behind. The mist felt damp against Darek's skin, and the stench of it made him gag. It smelled like rotted burning flesh, and that worried him. Darek heard a cough and looked back over his shoulder. "Are you all right?" he asked. "Yes." Rowena nodded. "I'm getting tired, though. My eyes sting, and it's hard to breathe." "Shall we rest awhile?" Darek asked. "No. Pola and Zantor may be in danger. We've got to keep going." Darek nodded. He could hear the mind cries, too. His dragon friend, Zantor, was sending messages of distress. Zantor and Darek's best friend, Pola, had disappeared into the Black Mountains more than a week ago. They and three other Great Blue dragonlings had been carried off by a runaway wagon. Darek and Rowena felt responsible. They had been jealous of each other and had quarreled over Zantor. As a result, the Chief Elder had ordered his men to capture another dragonling for Rowena. While on the dragon quest, Pola, Zantor, and the others had been lost. Rowena coughed again and gasped for air. "Pull your collar up over your mouth and nose, Darek said. "The cloth will filter some of the smoke." Strange shapes loomed out of the mist. Black rocks, like cinders, dotted their path. All of Darek's senses were alert, keen to the dangers that might assail them at any moment. "I wonder what our families will think when they wake this morning and find us gone," he said quietly. Rowena didn't answer right away. "We must not think of that", she said at last. "We must dream of the day when we return with Pola and the dragons." Darek wished he could be sure that day would come, but he could not. No one had ever returned from the Black Mountains of Krad. For centuries now, it had been forbidden even to venture into them. What would his parents and his older brother, Clep, think when they realized where he had gone? He could see his mother's tearstained face now. We will find a way back, Mother, he promised silently. "Did you hear that?" Rowena suddenly cried out. Darek stopped and listened. He thought he heard a soft scuffling sound, but when he peered into the mist, all he could make out were strange, twisted rock forms and the stumps of long-dead trees. "I don't see anything," he whispered. 'No, Rowena said. "I guess not." She put her hand to her forehead and moaned softly. "Ooohh," she said. "My head and stomach ache." Darek's head hurt, too. Could the very mists be poisonous? he wondered. "We're almost to the peak," he told Rowena. "It will be easier going down the other side. We won't have to breathe as hard." The ground beneath them leveled off at long last, and they started to descend. Darek began to move with greater caution. If something or someone was waiting below, he wanted to see it before it saw him. His headache was worse, making it harder and harder to think. Behind him, he heard Rowena moan once more. "Are you sure you're all right?" he asked again. "Yes, she said, but her voice trembled. Darek's worry deepened. He had to get her out of the mountains quickly. "Can you walk any faster?" he asked. "I -- I don't know. I can't even think straight." Darek turned. Rowena's skin was very pale, and her lips looked blue. "Lean on me" he said. Rowena gladly took his arm, and they struggled on together. Darek shook his head. It felt as if the mist were seeping into his mind. Minutes seemed to drag by. Rowena was leaning on him more and more heavily. "Is it much farther?" she asked weakly. "No, not much. See, the mist is thinning." "Good, because I don't feel...ooohh." Rowena suddenly pushed Darek aside, clapped a hand over her mouth, and started to run. Darek stumbled on a cinder and fell. "Rowena, wait!" he cried. He scrambled to his feet again, but before he could catch her, Rowena disappeared into the mist. "Rowena!" he called, but there was no reply, only a distant retching sound. Then, suddenly, there was a scream. Dragons of Krad copyright © 1997 by Jackie French Koller

I love dragons! Big, small, short, or tall. But baby dragons, or dragonlings, are the ultimate in cuteness for me. So when I found this series I was hooked. The Dragonling is an enchanting story of how a young boy, dreaming of going on his own dragonquest, finds a dragonling whose mother has been killed. Although the boy, Derek, has been taught to hate and fear dragons this dragonling tugs at his heartstrings. He decides to return the baby to the Valley of the Dragons, to his own kind. Along the way the two become friends and Derek names the dragonling Zantor. When at last they pair arrive at the Valley of the Dragons, Derek is amazed to learn that the dragons aren't to be feared as he'd been taught. And the prospect of staying with the dragons is not what Zantor wants. Will the village folk, and Derek's family, accept the dragonling into their midst?A perfect story to help children learn that while we aren't all alike externally, the same love beats in all hearts. Well told, easy to read, and full of likable characters, this story will charm readers of all ages. Great read for ages 7-10 but also works as a read-to book for ages 4-6. Short chapters, detailed artwork.

My son (8) enjoyed this book very much and would like to read the others in the Dragongling series. The book was interesting but too elementary for my 11yo daughter.

Fabulous cute book. I need the rest of the series now.

My little girl is a HUGE dragon and dinosaur fan. This book, although she read it for school, she loved it. We read it once every 2 weeks, she now has certain lines memorized and loves to read it with me.

My all time favorite children's book.

This is a re-release with new cover art, which I love. I wish the interior illustrations were updated, too, but I think the fresh cover will draw kids in and hopefully the story will keep them engaged. This is a short story, but full of great action and heart. I loved the characters. I would happily hand this to any kid who loves fantasy and is ready to try some short chapter books.

The Dragonling and its sequels remains one of the best examples of high fantasy for young people that I have ever had the pleasure to read. It is engaging and fun enough to keep younger readers interested, and beautiful enough to be appreciated and enjoyed many years later. The characters are dimensional and understandable; the plot is gripping, new, and a great deal deeper than it appears on the surface. These books first introduced me to the concept that dragons did not have to be brutal animals OR plush and ridiculous characters. The dragons form an important part of the story without degenerating into sidekicks. The story takes place on the world of Zoriac, in a village that has for generations been defined by the dragonquests--ritual hunts undertaken by the men of the village to "protect their families" from the threat of the nearby Valley of Dragons. Derek, the young protagonist, desperately wants to go along with his brother Clep and his father, but is still too young to take part. Discovering an orphaned dragonling with the corpse of its mother, the boy makes the decision to take the little creature back to its home--a decision that sparks the ire of the villagers and eventually a perilous adventure involving kidnapping, the last remnants of a species, a barbaric kingdom in the mountains, slaves, superstition, an outcast king, and one boy's journey to teach his people the truth about their predjudices. A truly stirring story! The Dragonling books skillfully replace the required romance aspect of adult high fantasy with the notion that boys and girls can be friends and equals. Apart from that detail, these books have every bit as much scope as the other fantasy greats; I simply cannot recommend them highly enough. I hope that any future readers out there will enjoy them as much as I have!

I have loved this book ever since I was in third grade. I remember reading it at school when we studied medieval times. I am now a third grade teacher, and I am purchasing several copies to use with my group of lower readers.I love how Darek's schema shifts throughout the story, as he realizes that maybe the way that his community feels about dragons isn't always right, and sometimes traditions need to change.

This book offers lots of information, backed by both scientific sources and the author's personal experience as a physician. But what I appreciated most was the author's calm and reassuring tone. The book lives up to its subtitle, An Optimistic Guide to Understanding and Healing. Although Lucas describes admittedly alarming situations in detail, he does not sensationalize the disease. Instead he presents a very human side of both the victims and the loved ones (usually the parents).I found that Demystifying Anorexia Nervosa is an excellent complement to Ellyn Satter's books about children's eating and the "division of responsibility" idea. Lucas, like Satter, place great importance on respecting the individual and the individual's desire to make decisions for him/herself. (For those who have not read Satter's books, they describe how to have the right feeding relationship with your child, and also offer excellent practical advice on feeding babies through school age children.)

20 years ago being a parent to an Anorexia Nervosa patient often meant being subjected to scrutiny bordering on assumption that there must be some family "problem", overenmeshment etc. causing the child's illness. Dr. Luca's book sets the story straight and is genuinely helpful to parent's struggling with this disorder in an offspring, e.g. p 17, "Work with patient's) parents focused on helping them to cope better with Andrea's illness and on assuring them that they were not at fault."This book is written in a very readable style and, reflecting Dr. Luca's academic credentials, it is accurate and informative.I enthusiastically recommend it to my patients & their families.

Review

“A lovely autobiography, equal parts dish and pathos.” ―Vanity Fair“[Lowe] writes viscerally and insightfully...He looks back at the aberrant highs of his heart-throb days, the changing nature of stardom in Hollywood, the trade-off he has made between high life and home life, and the step-by-step effort behind his show business survival. He looked like the callowest kid in the "Outsiders" crew. Now he looks like the sturdiest of them all” ―The New York Times“I really enjoyed it...Thoroughly entertaining: the Brat Pack years, the Wayne's World years, the Alcoholic Obscurity, the Glamorous Romances (Princess Stephanie of Monaco!), the Inevitable Rehab, and the Triumphant Comeback on The West Wing.” ―Time Magazine“[Lowe's] charming, honest, even affectionate memoir is the story of strong guts behind a strikingly handsome face...A book to recommend widely.” ―Booklist“A fresh pop-culture history of Hollywood in the '70s and '80s from the point of view of the man who lived it…[Lowe] is as funny as he is thoughtful. This is the best type of celeb memoir, because its author is as interested in the world as the world is interested in him.” ―People Magazine“The world would be a better place if more stars' memoirs were like Lowe's--chatty, dishy, and with celebrity walk-ons (Tom Cruise! Sarah Jessica Parker! Princess Stephanie of Monaco! Martin Sheen!) galore. As entertaining as a Brat Pack film festival.” ―Parade

As several other reviewers have mentioned, I ordered this book for my Kindle after seeing Rob on "Oprah!" last week. I'm almost finished with it (2 more chapters to go) and have enjoyed every word. Those readers looking for salacious, mean-spirited gossip won't find it here. But Rob does talk a great deal about the famous folk he's been involved with over the years: JFK Jr., the Sheens, Daryl Hannah, Princess Stephanie of Monaco, and of course his fellow members of the Brat Pack. His fondness for many of them shines through, and he describes the relationships in such a way that I felt I'd had an honest little glimpse of each one.As a movie and TV buff for most of my life, I loved the behind-the-scenes glimpses of Rob's various projects, particularly "The Outsiders" and "The West Wing."Others may pick up this book with different expectations, but I've found it well worth the investment of time and money. Thanks, Rob, for the interesting peek inside your various worlds: son and brother, fledgling actor, Brat Packer, Hollywood superstar, and finally, devoted husband and brother.

STORIES I ONLY TELL MY FRIENDS by Rob Lowe is a memoir of Rob Lowe life from childhood thru to right after he finished his work on The West Wing. He writes about his unconventional family, his early drive to act, the celebrities he has stumbled across along with the ones he has developed close relationships with, and many of the wild experiences he has felt lucky to have in his life. I enjoyed reading about how Rob Lowe grew up. His family was a mess, especially his mother, and while he doesn't say it straight that acting was a way to escape his family and lose himself in focusing on his craft, it is certainly implied. As many of the better celebrity memoirs are, Lowe make a point of saying that no matter how hard you work at acting and how good you are, there is always some luck involved. Lowe worked hard and made sure as he had as many opportunities for luck as possible. He also writes in awe of many of his experiences, as if he still can't believe some of the things that have happened to him. I think my favorite was he was working with James Cameron to act in a movie that Lowe wrote and was to direct (it never came to be). But really, there are so many great stories and made me smile and laugh throughout the whole book. A fun book; I think anyone who reads STORIES I ONLY TELL MY FRIENDS will have a new appreciation for who Rob Lowe really is and smile because of it.

To be honest, my main reason for buying this book was that I was a huge "Outsiders" fan back in the early 80's. I always felt Rob was the best looking Greaser in the cast & as the years passed, also felt he was the best looking of the Brat Pack. I certainly didn't expect his book to be more than a compilation of stories about his life in Hollywood but it is more than that. He discusses his parent's divorce, his mother's depression, their financial struggles & his love for his wife & sons. He also gives Outsiders fans a great behind-the-scenes look into the making of that film. He is very candid & exposes himself as a flawed human being like the rest of us. He does discuss other Hollywood pals & tells some great stories but he doesn't make their celebrity the focal point of these tales or his book. A must read for those who loved the movie the Outsiders and anyone who is a fan of Rob's.

I got this book because I watched Rob Lowe on a few TV interviews and thought he had very interesting things to say.I really wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised to find this to be overall one of the best personal biographies I've ever read.I guess I was expecting arrogance and pretense and got exactly the opposite. To me his public image seemed very high brow and narcissistic. After reading the book found him to be very genuine, humble, and intelligent with a great deal of emotional depth. Who knew?I hope he continues to write honest, insightful books like this one. If he does, I'll continue to buy them.

In my opinion, Rob Lowe is a decent actor, but an excellent book writer. I came upon this book as part of my work assignment, not as a fan, so all I really knew about Rob was the roles he's been in, specifically the more popular roles (Outsiders, About Last Night, St. Elmo's Fire).Anyhow, don't let his pretty face and mediocre acting in the past fool you (my opinion of course, and he's gotten much better over the years). This guy had to work hard in the entertainment industry to get where he is, although I am sure his looks did help him quite a bit. But it's his way with words and art of storytelling that captivated me more than his blue eyes or celebrity status.I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys memoirs. You don't have to be a fan, but you may end up one after reading this book. Excellent job, Mr. Lowe!

Expensive, terrible to read, and the product gave me difficulty when trying to use either Kindle Cloud reader and my android device on my phone to access it. i was only able to use my PC and Kindle Fire to read this book. Possessively too much for my device to consume. no problems with other books, just this monster. Too expensive, not easily accessible, and not greatly written either.

I had to rent this book for a course that I took last semester. Thank goodness for book rentals because this is the most boring, wordy book that I have ever read. I don't think it's because it had to do with finances, I just think it was poorly written. I wouldn't recommend this book as toilet paper and I wish that professors would give other options. There has to be a more relatable way to talk about financials in schools.

Honestly, one of the most incomprehensible reads I have ever encountered. Unnecessarily convoluted. I wouldn't waist my money. Most of this information can be Googled anyway.

Finance turned out to be the best class to not only understand school finance but how to get hold of your own finances.

Not an easy read! Bored me to sleep.

Provided a ton of information on financing education throughout the nation.

Good book, but way, way overpriced for a paperback. Bought this only because it was a graduate class requirement.

Lots of good information but a very boring read which made it tedious.
