There isn't anything revolutionary in this book, but it is very useful if you're new to making charts or want to refine your skills to become a better presenter.This text does a great job of articulating how charts can be made to maximize their effectiveness. Some of the tips that now seem intuitively obvious include: only try to make one point with a chart because a busy chart will be quickly disregarded, put a one sentence sub-title on the chart which explicitly tells the audience what that one point is, and list the source of information below the data. Small refinements like these have helped make my presentations go smoother by allowing my audience to follow my arguments by making my thesis crystal clear and minimizing questions on where my data came from or what they're looking at in a chart.Although some see this book being pre-Excel/PowerPoint as a drawback, I disagree because these are just the modern tools to make the same charts this text describes.
The first 2 sections of the book provides a good procedure for making a clear communication : determine your message, identify the type of comparison and then select a suitable chart type.The thidd section entitled "Say it with concepts and metaphors" consists of around 60 pages with graphical symbols and pictures. There is little to none explanation given so I tend to consider these pages as plain and simple book page filling.The last section looks like an recent update added to the existing material. This becomes obvious when knowing only this section contains colored pages. The bulk of the book are pages without color. For a book on presentation techniques this is a serious mistake.In conclusion reading this book will give you a feeling of "interesting stuff" on one side but also a feeling of incompleteness and clumpsy finishing. A rework by adding colors and some explanation about when and how to concepts and metaphors is more than welcome.
There's a lot of useful information in this book. The most educational for me is1. Decide what your message is and THEN design your chart. Don't just generate whatever chart Excel will spit out for you, generate the chart that SAYS what you are trying to say.2. Once you know what you are trying to say, there are TRIGGER WORDS that lead you to the correct chart. "Increasing" suggests a time series chart. "More than" suggests an item chart. Etc.3. The author also shows how to highlight certain lines or bars in the chart to draw the eye to the point you're trying to make.4. The exercises are useful for internalizing what you've read and feeling a sense of mastery.As others have noted, the book ends at the halfway mark but the author fills up the last half of the book with pointless illustrations and visuals to communicate concepts. But how many pictures of process flows do you need to see to get the point? And what am I supposed to do with a page full of mazes? So the last half of the book is pointless. For this, I take off a mark.The author has also added a few pages on how to create slides using PowerPoint. But the advice misses the mark by a mile, suggesting you use colored text on a black background, and encourages the use of animations. In fact, black on white has the best readability and animations are more often just self-indulgent play that doesn't improve clarity for the audience.However, the first half of the book is excellent, practial and will give your charts purpose and your presentation clear meaning. These few simple concepts, accompanied by attractively hand-drawn examples, makes the book more than worthwhile.
Great basic guide to building informative, simple charts. The book is a bit dated but the fundamentals presented have held up well in the modern world of data visualization.
I just received the new latest version of this book - August, 2004. The book succeeds in showing good and bad examples of the same presentations, but that doesn't require a book. It requires a graphics department. Nowhere does the book tell you how to make any of the charts. In today's world, many of us must create our own presentations with whatever is available, usually Excel or Powerpoint or similar tools.I would also offer that most readers will not work through the exercises, as the percentage of our jobs that requires chart development is usually small. I grasped the basics of the book quickly. Keep it simple. I will assume that certain professionals, such as those in marketing or sales or executives giving a presentation to the board of directors, might need this level of specialization, but I find little useful in the book. Following the guideline of 'keep it simple', I will simplify my priorities, by focusing on other skills mastery. Mastering charts to this degree is beyond my needs.
Even though this book was originally written in 1985 and last updated in 2001, it is still a treasure. Section 1, Choosing Charts, provides the best framework I have even seen for choosing which chart to use to support a given message. Section 2, Using Charts, not only provides great tips for presenting data but also shows pairs of good & bad charts so you can see the difference. ou can skip sections 3 & 4 (metaphors and color/special effects) since the advice is now very dated. Still Sections 1 & 2 make this book a must have classic and a treasure. I'm told Steven Few is the new Zelazny when it comes to data visualization - just picked up his 3 books and looking forward to comparing the two.
If you are looking for excercises on how to convey information visually, this is the book for you. The author is of course one of the best at this specific task so you are learning from the best. Don't expect to learn straight "answers" on how to make your graphics, this book is all about thinking about how to make them, but implementing the concepts can definitely vary in your actual work products.
