The book shows its age terribly: a wealth of irrelevant material and a plague of middle French quotations (untranslated, of course) which show either the author's erudition or her utter contempt for those who would read her work without knowing French (Merde!). Buy Robert Graves' White Goddess instead; or anything by Graves for that matter.

Because Eliot's "Waste Land" is taught in virtually every British and American lit survey course, the name "Jessie Weston" and the title "From Ritual to Romance" have become familiar to perhaps millions of readers throughout the world. However, if readers hope to get beyond the "trivial pursuit" question of the source to which Eliot was indebted and to a genuine understanding of the "Fisher King" myth, they will need to read that source for themselves. Though not a quick and accessible read, the book repays the reader's patience. Not only does it help bring Eliot's poem to life but it illuminates the poetic tradition from Chaucer to Eliot and makes more meaningful the numerous adaptations of the myth in modern culture--from David Lodge's "Small World" to Robin Williams' "The Fisher King." Not for a sophomore survey course, but definitely for any upperlevel course on Eliot or Arthurian legend.

So many of the quotes and excerpts are in French, German, Latin, etc and aren't translated! I don't get it...

English is NOT my mother tongue. But I have read a few boo books including the magnificent one-volume edition of The Golden Bough, which I keep reading with great pleasure and profit.I was tempted to give one star Miss Weston's book, but no guts; I have settled on two. Here are my reasons:1. The book needs a major editing. An able editor could free the book from its deadwood and unnecessary repetitions saving perhaps some 50 pages from this Dover edition. The able editor could also apply the rules of sentence and paragraph construction to ease the reader's access to and comprehension of the topic. Although there are some few lines that are clear tot he reader, this virtue cannot be found in any single page.2. All non-English citations should be translated into English and included in the text or in footnotes. To a reader who does not know those languages the citations are useless..3. An appendix ought to be provided to include the names of important personages in the book. The Dover edition itself is flawless: Good paper, good print, and good binding., .

The formatting is rubbish. Every line of the book is broken in half. For heaven's sake this should be blindingly obvious to any reviewer. Appalling that it is allowed for sale. I shall be seeking refund. I bought the other avaiable edition - which has proper formatting.

Based on other reviews I expected great things. What I got was a book written in the 20s which has never been updated. The quotes from other works are in French or other languages without translation. There is nothing here that has not been covered by newer works in greater detail.

This book, published in 1920, was a seminal influence on both T.S. Eliot in "The Wasteland" and Ernest Hemingway in "The Sun Also Rises". Eighty years later, it's still easy to see why. Although the book is short-just over 200 pages-it is almost unbelievably wide-ranging. As she deconstructs the elements of the various versions of the tales of the Holy Grail, Ms. Weston takes the reader globetrotting and time-traveling, from Vedic India to turn of the century Africa and Japan, with stops in between in Europe and the Middle East from antiquity to her own time. She relates the Grail stories to archaic sacred kingship, fertility rituals and dances, the rites and myths of Adonis, Attis and Mithra, as well as Gnostic Christianity. If you're interested in the Grail, the history of western culture, the history of religious ideas, or the transmission of myth and ritual into literary forms, "From Ritual To Romance" is truly a revelation.

this book is a must for anybody interested in the tales and legends centred upon the Grial. It is also very pleasant to read. The author presented here the (then, that is 1920) revolutionary theory that most elements in the cycle of the Grial stories are actually the remnants of incredibly old fertility rituals that, somehow, survived in remote parts of the Roman empire. It is extremely interesting to see how the author reached this conclusion and how she was prepared to defend it against the campaigners for the christianity of the Grial. And on top of everything, she writes in a deliciously archaic English, sprinkled with French and Latin (mind the quotations. They are not translated)

He includes sermons for funerals and care plan charts to contact the mourner. I think every believer should read this book to be prepared to share the gospel adequately and compassionately in times of suffering. There are more books in this series I have also purchased, and look forward to reading for additional help.

While it is designed for pastors, this is a volume that will equip and encourage all believers as we fulfill our Christian obligation to “mourn with those who mourn.” This short volume is divided into sections covering pastoral care and preaching.Tautges encourages the reader that care for the grieving does not conclude at the memorial service and offers a helpful guide on how to make sure that those needing continued care will receive it. He also encourages pastors, and all Christians, to take up the art of letter writing as a means of offering care and then proceeds with some practical, “how-to” advice.While Tautges is clear those grieving need personal, one-on-one care, he does not minimize the need of care from the pulpit. He offers a few sample sermons from funerals to offer examples of Christ-centered, sensitive, evangelistic messages to share in corporate times of grieving.This is a volume that will help many to love and care for those around them who are hurting. It is short and accessible and I see no reason that it should not be read by many.I received a review copy of this book from the publisher.

This is another book in the Practical Shepherding series edited by Brian Croft. Having just read Nancy Guthrie’s book on the same subject, I found myself making comparisons between the two. Honestly, I think Guthrie’s book is more thoughtful, practical and well-researched. Tautges’ book does have some helpful sections on writing letters to those who are grieving and sharing passages of Scripture that can be comforting to the grieving, but it’s too brief of a book for so complex a subject as ministering to those in grief. If you are going to buy 1 book on the subject, buy What Grieving People Wish You Knew about What Really Helps.

Very helpful, practical bible basked book. I was impressed right off with a reference to Jeremiah 29:11 in context, as a promise to the exiled nation of Isreal! There is so much comfort for believers, but this book does not say all is good, as he points out also what comforts cause harm or false hope. I disagree with this pastor though that he directs this book only to pastors as shepherds, but person to person ministry is something needed of every believer, not just those being paid or have a position to do so. Thankfully, this book is helpful to all. Read and benefit from its truths! Short andistance easy read!

The tendency is to cast all Russians as some how anti-Western, anti-Capitalist and anti-American. This books gives a realistic picture of one slice of post-Communist Russia in the Age of Putin by a respected journalist who knows Russia well.Modern Russia and contemporary Russians are a product of a complex history. Russia has no real traditions of Western style democracy, at least during the historical eras, Renaissance, Enlightenment and the modern Industrial Revolution within which representative democracy emerged. Instead, Russians knew autocratic rule by Tsars, revolution and Communist Dictatorship. Democracy does not spring out of nothing. From an evolving parliament in England to the town hall meetings of New England, our ancestors slowly built traditions of self-government. Russia has little of that sort of tradition upon which to build. Most westerners seem unaware that the Russian suspicion and even hostility to the west grows from the real historical experience of being invaded by various Western Countries determined to seize Russian territory and at least in the Middle Ages force the Russian people to convert from Russian Orthodoxy to Roman Catholicism. Swedes, Germans, Poles, Lithuanians, Napoleon, Finns and Hitler have all had a go at Russia and all left a legacy of great suffering and misery. The view of many Russians is that no good comes to Russia or its people from the West.Anne Garrels has covered Russia as a correspondent for many years. She speaks Russians. She has Russian friends who both respect and trust her. Garrels not only interviews Russians she offers a sympathetic picture of their lives. As an American Foreign Service Officer (career diplomat), I lived in eight countries. I wish I could have read a book like *Putin Country* about each of them before I got there.

In Chelyabinsk, one learns of the daily routines and challenges that confront millions of Russians outside the bigger metropolises of Moscow and St. Petersburg.The author, one of America's most intrepid journalists, is uniquely qualified to identify contemporary issues facing Russians. She has experience, as well as language and country expertise rarely seen in reporters who have dealt with Russia. I am a strong believer that democracy is not necessarily the right form of government for all countries, and Russia could not survive if they had an American style democracy. They need a "strong man" in charge or they are completely lost. This is an excellent read and gives some great insight into many aspects of daily life in rural Russia, and how the people there think.

There isn't anything revolutionary in this book, but it is very useful if you're new to making charts or want to refine your skills to become a better presenter.This text does a great job of articulating how charts can be made to maximize their effectiveness. Some of the tips that now seem intuitively obvious include: only try to make one point with a chart because a busy chart will be quickly disregarded, put a one sentence sub-title on the chart which explicitly tells the audience what that one point is, and list the source of information below the data. Small refinements like these have helped make my presentations go smoother by allowing my audience to follow my arguments by making my thesis crystal clear and minimizing questions on where my data came from or what they're looking at in a chart.Although some see this book being pre-Excel/PowerPoint as a drawback, I disagree because these are just the modern tools to make the same charts this text describes.

The first 2 sections of the book provides a good procedure for making a clear communication : determine your message, identify the type of comparison and then select a suitable chart type.The thidd section entitled "Say it with concepts and metaphors" consists of around 60 pages with graphical symbols and pictures. There is little to none explanation given so I tend to consider these pages as plain and simple book page filling.The last section looks like an recent update added to the existing material. This becomes obvious when knowing only this section contains colored pages. The bulk of the book are pages without color. For a book on presentation techniques this is a serious mistake.In conclusion reading this book will give you a feeling of "interesting stuff" on one side but also a feeling of incompleteness and clumpsy finishing. A rework by adding colors and some explanation about when and how to concepts and metaphors is more than welcome.

There's a lot of useful information in this book. The most educational for me is1. Decide what your message is and THEN design your chart. Don't just generate whatever chart Excel will spit out for you, generate the chart that SAYS what you are trying to say.2. Once you know what you are trying to say, there are TRIGGER WORDS that lead you to the correct chart. "Increasing" suggests a time series chart. "More than" suggests an item chart. Etc.3. The author also shows how to highlight certain lines or bars in the chart to draw the eye to the point you're trying to make.4. The exercises are useful for internalizing what you've read and feeling a sense of mastery.As others have noted, the book ends at the halfway mark but the author fills up the last half of the book with pointless illustrations and visuals to communicate concepts. But how many pictures of process flows do you need to see to get the point? And what am I supposed to do with a page full of mazes? So the last half of the book is pointless. For this, I take off a mark.The author has also added a few pages on how to create slides using PowerPoint. But the advice misses the mark by a mile, suggesting you use colored text on a black background, and encourages the use of animations. In fact, black on white has the best readability and animations are more often just self-indulgent play that doesn't improve clarity for the audience.However, the first half of the book is excellent, practial and will give your charts purpose and your presentation clear meaning. These few simple concepts, accompanied by attractively hand-drawn examples, makes the book more than worthwhile.

Great basic guide to building informative, simple charts. The book is a bit dated but the fundamentals presented have held up well in the modern world of data visualization.

I just received the new latest version of this book - August, 2004. The book succeeds in showing good and bad examples of the same presentations, but that doesn't require a book. It requires a graphics department. Nowhere does the book tell you how to make any of the charts. In today's world, many of us must create our own presentations with whatever is available, usually Excel or Powerpoint or similar tools.I would also offer that most readers will not work through the exercises, as the percentage of our jobs that requires chart development is usually small. I grasped the basics of the book quickly. Keep it simple. I will assume that certain professionals, such as those in marketing or sales or executives giving a presentation to the board of directors, might need this level of specialization, but I find little useful in the book. Following the guideline of 'keep it simple', I will simplify my priorities, by focusing on other skills mastery. Mastering charts to this degree is beyond my needs.

Even though this book was originally written in 1985 and last updated in 2001, it is still a treasure. Section 1, Choosing Charts, provides the best framework I have even seen for choosing which chart to use to support a given message. Section 2, Using Charts, not only provides great tips for presenting data but also shows pairs of good & bad charts so you can see the difference. ou can skip sections 3 & 4 (metaphors and color/special effects) since the advice is now very dated. Still Sections 1 & 2 make this book a must have classic and a treasure. I'm told Steven Few is the new Zelazny when it comes to data visualization - just picked up his 3 books and looking forward to comparing the two.

If you are looking for excercises on how to convey information visually, this is the book for you. The author is of course one of the best at this specific task so you are learning from the best. Don't expect to learn straight "answers" on how to make your graphics, this book is all about thinking about how to make them, but implementing the concepts can definitely vary in your actual work products.
