I love these fold-out guides. I've bought them for other states in which I lived too. They are always informative, easy to read, and have just about the right content. I admit...I would have liked just a few more graphics, but it is still great. (Opsrey in flight would have helped.) I'm not a sophisticated bird watcher, but when I go out in my neighborhood with these guides, I can postiively identify birds. It is so much fun!

Even though I am an avid birder and have many standard guide books I also own over a dozen of the foldable guides in this series. I use them as "flash cards" before a trip in order to become familiar with the common birds in a particular area so I can spot the unusual ones quicker. I also give them to my non-birding companions so I can share the joy of identifying wild birds. It is not as intimidating to them as a Sibley's or a Peterson's guide book. I should mention that the guide has less than half of the birds that can spotted in the region but it does cover the most popular species. However, it is great for a primer or for beginners and children.

Nice gift for my elderly father who enjoys looking at the birds that gather at his bird feeder. It is easier to use than a book and seems to cover all the birds in his area. I recommend.

Got it for friends who hike/camp. They really liked having something sturdy and easy to carry along on their journeys.

This has been a great addition to our homeschool nature studies! We keep it near the backdoor, outside of which is located several bird feeders. Perfect size/length for kids--not too overwhelmingly long, but with great pics of many common VA birds. My 5yo son loves it! **We also love other guides in this same series, and many are eligible for the 4-for-3 promotion. Also love that they're laminated; they seem very durable and have already withstood some abuse from our resident 1yo.

This book has useful information and great pictures of John Britten's dream bike. It was ahead of its time and I see no reason why any of the large bike companies can't build it under licence. It is still a very advanced motorcycle, even today.

The book seemed to reflect mostly of B-17’s rather than the B-24’s of the 15th Air Force. In that regard I was very disappointed in the book.

The U.S. Fifteenth Air Force was tasked to destroy or incapacitate the Axis forces in Central and Southern Europe from 1943 through 1945. It did not enjoy the glamour of bases in Great Britain but flew logistically tough missions such as the shuttle missions which landed in Russia, rearmed and sortied back to southern bases. The low level Ploesti raids also belonged to the Fifteenth so hardly more need be said for their combat challenges.Mahoney is more than familiar with the history of the Fifteenth and is accomplished as an author. Bombing Europe is no archetypal history book. Instead, it is a concise history laden with trials and tribulations of the aircrews and generously stocked with images. The text relates the thinking and the context of the events while the photos bring these events jumping off the book's pages.The images are many, often dramatic and too often tragic. Death and injury in the cold skies are recounted in one event after another with no two being the same. The photographs are large—a welcome characteristic of Mahoney's fine book along with his engaging but never wasteful writing.Bombing Europe is a small size coffee table book well at home in a library or on a side table. I was hoping this book would be a pictorial history of the 15th AF in World War II with a narrative of their combat operations--it wasn't. Instead, it was mostly a collection of stories about the individuals who served in the 15th and what they went through on a variety of combat missions. Lots of tales of bombers being shot up and shot down, along with stories about strafing, crash landing, photo recon and life as a POW.My favorite part of the book is the great photo selection. If you're a fan of the B-17 and/or B-24, this book will make you smile. Lots of great bomber pictures, both in action, on the ground and in moments of agony. Definitely a fine photo collection.I was a bit disappointed with the text--fair amount of typos and I think the overall design of the narrative could have been better.Five stars for the photos, three stars for the text. Four overall.

A compelling book and a terrifying one. And a must read for anyone who's worried about what they're eating. And anyone who's ever wondered how come chicken and eggs are so cheap nowadays at the supermarket. Back in 16th century France, King Henry IV when he acceded the throne found a country devastated by war and launched what was probably History's first campaign to fight poverty and stimulate economic growth. He famously used the slogan "a chicken in every Sunday pot" - meaning that a chicken, then a luxury, should be the one meal of choice for every French family at least once a week. Now, four centuries later, we have chicken every day, we have eggs galore every morning.But what kind of chicken is it, what kind of meat? The author does a superb investigative job to answer that question, talking to everyone at Tyson Foods (one of the biggest corporation controling the meat market, from egg to frozen food) and digging into its history. All that makes for a captivating account. What contract farming means for the farmers working for Tyson Foods is revealed in all its hair-raising details.A pity the book doesn't go as far as I would have liked - but I shouldn't complain, after all, as its title implies, it stops at "the meat racket". Still, I would have liked to see more about what it means for consumers, I am especially worried about all the chemicals and genetic manipulations that go into modern meat production and what they do to us humans - could the current ghastly wave of obesity that has overwhelmed America and is now reaching Europe be ascribed to them? I fear so but of course I don't have the proof and this is not a book that will throw light on that aspect.Nevertheless, as far as it goes, this is an excellent book and it should be read. Your next fried egg will never look the same to you again! And maybe one of these days, in a follow-up book, Christopher Leonard will apply his remarkable investigative talents to uncover what modern agriculture does to human health. I am looking forward to it. Meanwhile, read this book, highly recommended.

I am a poultry farmer and I appreciate Mr. Leonard's shedding light on the way the industry operates. In the last seven years I have seen expenses increase with no increase in the amount I am paid per pound of chicken and in fact have seen my income fall due to production cuts, yet I have seen the large poultry companies report record profits.

This is an important and very readable book. This is a HUGE component in reversing climate change, and not enough people are talking about it.ORGANIC FARMERS AND GARDENERS: PLEASE TAKE THIS NEXT, PLANET-SAVING STEP! You'll save water, as well.Read Gaia's Garden to learn how - another wonderful book.I've been an organic garden forever, but I learned a lot that I wish CSA farmers would learn about the damage tilling does, in terms of climate change and each consumer's carbon footprint.I now practice no-till gardening, an expansion of Ruth Stout's approach 50 years ago - mulch the bejeezus out of your soil, feed worms and germs. Only dig where you need to (I use a triangular hand-hoe - Ken Ho, I think it's called, which also slices weeds off paths and elsewhere, just below the surface), chop up any yard waste on the spot and add to the mulch along with any weeds, which pull easily out of the loose mulch and soil underneath.Also, Hugelkulture, where you put a log at the base of a raised be, cover it with yard waste, leaves, and soil, and plant over the whole works, or next to it. You DON'T HAVE TO WATER IT, according to many testimonies. I'm just starting to use this - I live where we have hot, dry summers and have already cut back markedly on watering with mulching and making swales of various sizes downhill from all my plantings, which I fill with leaves, bark, twigs, etc. They serve as paths and also as long-term water storage.Tilled soil, on the other hand, releases carbon into the atmosphere (which is why the soil eventually gets depleted and "less-black"), destroys mycorrhyzae, worms, and other soil life, and lets water evaporate instead of return to the aquifers and hydrate plants.

Gardening magazines have told the same story for decades: someone buys a piece of land that is mostly sand orgravel, and then the gardener brings it back to life by mixing in manure, compost and cover crops. And one day,the worms appear, a signal that the soil has become a rich and fertile, water-retaining, bed of nourishment forhealthy and robust crops, whether flowers or food.On our own small plots of land, this is an act of healing and renewal. And Kristin Ohlson's book tells thesame story, that the vast expanses of grassland exploited for centuries, and now turned or turning into desert, can alsobe healed and renewed the same way. But to accept the stories of the heroes she shares, is a monumental paradigm shift.We have to let go of the entrenched thinking that humans know best and return to a partnership with nature.A central figure in this book is Allan Savory, who understood decades ago that grasslands do not renew themselves, but thatthe fertility that was so prized by pioneers was the result of the massive migrations of the buffalo, who crossed the prairies,stirring and fertilizing the earth where they grazed, and then moving on. Hot sun and low rainfall in the dry seasons did notmatter, because the earth had become a big sponge, retaining water through drought, renewing the water table, able to sustain life.Ohlson provides a great introduction to Savory's work, which has now become a practice amongst enlightened farmersand ranchers around the globe. I knew about Savory, but I did not know of the other heroes--soil scientists and farmerswho have been also walking a similar path.How will the soil save us? Ohlson's book explains why healing the soil is the number one way to sequester carbon and remove itfrom our atmosphere.Monsanto claims to hold the key to survival in the years to come, but its science could not be more wrong. Read this book andfind out why healing the soil is the only true choice for the future, because by healing the soil, there is the greatest chance thatwe can reverse climate change in our children's lifetimes.

In reading "The Soil Will Save Us" it seemed to me that a better title would have been "How We Will Save the Soil". There is a lot of good information about soil conservation, but you don't find out until the last two pages about the potential impact of soil health on climate change -- and even those two pages seem have to be written almost as an afterthought. The information that the book presents on soil and climate is just the tip of the iceberg; for example, see the video athttp://rodaleinstitute.org/regenerative-organic-agriculture-and-climate-change/.The book is a good primer on the role of microbes -- fungi and bacteria -- in maintaining soil health and sequestering organic carbon. But it neglects other equally important soil conservation and sequestration methods such as remineralization. The author describes the hard clay in her back yard as an example of "soil with few microbial aggregates", but a soil test would probably pinpoint the problem as excess magnesium requiring addition of calcium to loosen the soil. A great book from Professors Klein and Philpotts. This book is a departure from the old-style mineralogy books in which mineral descriptions were not written in complete sentences. Nice. In creating a single book that includes rocks, minerals and other earth materials the detail of the content was condensed. It is a good book for courses that combine the content of mineralogy and petrology. Easy to read, you don't have to already be a geologist to understand it. I purchased the hard copy and the kindle.

This book exceeded my expectations in being eminently readable and clear. The authors make a relatively complex subject matter very understandable to a college-educated person. What is remarkable about this is that the authors did not dumb down the subject matter in any way. Topics like space groups, thermodynamics, hydrology, etc. are all covered in sufficient detail, so that the reader can actually understand the topic and is not just relegated to looking at charts and pictures. I highly recommend this text. The authors are masters of their domain! The price is great too!

I bought it for my preteen daughter, she loves studying rocks. She loves the book and all the detailed info.

Very good textbook for an intermediate mineralogy coarse.

Good textbook, softcover very susceptible to creasing damage in backpack. Price very reasonable though.

Is very good.Very complete in minerals. That is less complete in petrology

Used for definitions and examples in a federal appellate legal dispute.
