I just received my copy from Amazon today, so I haven't had a chance to read all of the essays yet. From what I've seen thus far, though, I think the text is going to do justice to the images. And that's saying something. The book is high-quality coated paper throughout, with excellent printing and binding as one expects from the UNC Press. The images are beautifully presented, nearly full-page in size in most cases.This is a collection of vivid full-color Kodachrome images taken by a young Japanese-American man who was interned at the Heart Mountain, Wyoming, camp during World War II. He captured everyday life in the camp, and its environs, and these color images bring it to life amazingly. I've read many books and seen many images - photographic and drawn/painted - by internees, as well as accounts by anthropologists in some of the camps, but these are real eye-openers.As those who lived and experienced the events of the Second World War are leaving us, it is especially important to preserve and present to new audiences the documents of those experiences. This book is an outstanding contribution to that effort.

When I teach "A Separate Peace" to my sophomore English students, I make every effort to immerse them into the culture of World War II on the home front. We watch "Casabalanca," Walt Disney's "Der Fuehrer's Face," the Andrews Sisters singing "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," Abbott and Costello's classic "Who's on First" routine. I show clips of Ken Burn's "The War" that talk about rationing, war bond drives, and Pearl Harbor.Perhaps the most poignant scene is Daniel Inouye's first-hand account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This, of course, leads to a discussion of the Japanese-American internment camps.Detractors would say that this book sugar coats the experiences of more than 100,000 Japanese-Americans who were placed in these relocation centers for much of the war. Granted, the photos do little to show the hardship and isolation of life in the camps. Even living conditions--cramped quarters, communal latrines--are not the intent of this book.What it does show is the spirit and determination of the incarcerated to provide a sense of normalcy to their daily lives. With more than 70 photos--all but a handful in color and most of them full-page--Bill Manbo's images are a testament to the ability to retain humanity under inhumane conditions. Manbo and his family were sent to the camp at Heart Mountain in Wyoming in 1942 where these photos were taken.Sure, there are pictures of guard towers (p. 45), the starkness of the barracks and the landscape (p. 26), and a moving image of the photographer's son clutching a barbed-wire fence at the edge of the camp.However, most of the scenes are much more cheerful: dancers in traditional attire, parades, ice skating, residents wrestling in the sumo ring, family outings...and lots of family photos.In addition to the photos, there are three essays: "A Youngster's Life Behind Barbed Wire," "Camera in Camp" and "Unexpected Views of the Internment." Each essay is about ten pages.If you think you know everything about the Japanese-American internment experience, this book will shine a light in corners you haven't seen before. First color images of a Japanese Relocation camp are the most vivid way to see camp life. My sansei experience was only through words and black and white photos until Colors of Confinement opened my eyes. This beautifully photographed book fleshed out the lives of the Internees. I can recommend this book to everyone. This is a wonderful view of life and shows the strength and courage of so many Japanese Americans who are simply loyal Americans.

I am 81 years old and was one of the "internees" in a Concentration Camp in Granada Colorado for almost 4 years. Since we were not allowed cameras in our Camp, this pictorial book is a treasure trove of pictures of what Camp Life was for me at the age of 9-14.Great book of historical value!

Although I am a fan of black and white photography, this book of color photos is very striking.The backstory and the family upon which the majority of the photos are based (a father capturing with photos his young 6 year old son at the camp) will go to your heart. If one hasn't really thought about or known someone who was placed in the internment camp then perhaps you can identify with this young family of American citizens who lost everything and were placed in these camps for no crime. Honest, tax paying, patriotic people who got swept up and put in camps under the direct order of President Franklin D Roosevelt and then CA Gov Earl Warren. The only crime these Americans were guilty of was their ethnicity. Imagine that you were told that you had two weeks to get rid of your house, your business, your belongings and to report with your family to the authorities. Sent by train to a distant part of the country and forced to stay until the duration.This is an ideal book to have at home that will spark conversation -especially among young people who need to understand this dark chapter of American History. A great companion to this book would be to find one on the 442 'Go For Broke' Regimental Combat Team comprised of Japanese American citizens who volunteered to fight -despite the fact that many of them had families interred in the camps. Starting in 1944 this unit is considered to be the most decorated infantry regiment in the history of the US Army winning 21 Medal of Honors, 8 Presidential Unit Citations for Valor, etc earning it the name 'The Purple Heart Battalion.'

Amazing look at the past that puts the landscape I grew up looking at wondering what was once there and why. A horrible moment for so many loyal Americans scared by hysteria of war and racism that should never be repeated. I am absolutely amazed as I flip through this book. The book itself is a very good quality. With that said, the contents are amazing! She covers everything from skin tone to soap bubbles! 3d objects, tears, snow, backgrounds, animal fur.... and on, and on, and on. I have no doubt, I will spend HOURS working with this book. I absolutely love it!

I was blown away by the amount of instructional content in this book. Helen is not only a coloring book illustrator, she was first an artist. She has applied many of her art techniques in coloring book form. This colorful guide shows us, step by step, how to achieve special effects on our pages. She even uses mediums that I would have never thought of on coloring book images. Water droplets on leaves, gems, balloons, wood grain, sparkly fairy dust, chrome, gold, silver, so many more than I can name.She's given us practice pages to try out the techniques. I would recommend copying and printing the practice pages so you can keep practicing.Also on her website she is giving us even more material to go along with the book. I just can't say enough about this colorist's guide. I'll do a video walk through later this week and upload it here.Don't miss this one!

Overall, I'm glad I bought the book. I would have loved to have had the book when I first started coloring. There are still dozens of things here that I didn't know before looking at the book. I find some of the instructions are a little vague. Having said that, I would still buy a book 2. I find youtube tutorials time consuming to find what I'm looking for and too slow to watch. I much prefer having a book to flip through when I need some help.

I'm so happy that I ordered this book. It arrived yesterday, and I spent my usual 2 hours of coloring time after dinner, just devouring the pages of information inside!There are many techniques explained clearly, step by step, and spaces within the book for you to "do it yourself". Personally, I plan to copy those pages, to practice repeatedly until I perfectly reproduce what I see in the book... THEN, I may color inside.Or, perhaps I'll leave it blank, to be passed down to the younger, budding colorists in my family. It's just that good.There are mediums suggested that I had never even thought of. I feel excited to get to trying my hand at these special effects, and I'm sure anyone else who loves coloring will feel the same.Go ahead, add to cart!

I love this book, the diagrams and instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The content is amazing, it covers a huge variety of techniques. I have done quite a lot of colouring, and you never stop learning, but I started the exercises from the beginning and am having so much fun. I can't wait for the next book.

I wanted to update my original review by adding some images of what I have learned to do. I also want to share a little tip that I find works nicely for me. I take tracing paper and place it on top of each step and color with my pencils. I get a good feel for the process. I keep learning and improving my coloring skills. I am very thankful for this book and am definitely looking forward to the next edition. You will need to know how to use the techniques from this edition in order to be able to complete some of the techniques in the next edition. Not sure how many that will entail. It is well worth learning now as you can see sneak peeks of the upcoming additions on Ms. Elliston's social media page. Now for my original review. I don't know where to begin. This Guide is fantastic. I am new to Adult Coloring and am so grateful that Helen developed this easy step by step guide to really make a difference in your pictures. I still have a lot to learn but have already seen a difference in how my images are turning out. I love that Helen is very active on Social Media and has asked for input on her 2nd Edition. I am definitely looking forward to that Guide as well. Colorist's Special Effects is well done. You have easy to understand photos along with instructions to get many desired effects. From Chrome, Hair, Skin, Lips, Eye Glasses and more, there is something new to learn at every turn. There are a lot of tricks for backgrounds as well as everyday items that add to your colored pieces. Glitter nail polish has become one of my favorite items to make certain images pop. If you want to take your Coloring to a Higher Level, I highly recommend this book. Learn to do jewels, bugs, tear drops, water drops, paint drops and more. I could go on and on, but if you purchase the book you will see what I am talking about. I am enclosing just a small sampling of what I have done. My clouds had an oopsy. They turned out beautifully, but then my Dog decided she wanted my attention right then. I recovered the best I could. Lesson learned, play with Dog before Coloring. This book is fantastic! It is very well put together and has all of the techniques, tips and tricks and guides that I've been needing to advance my coloring skills! From simple shading gradients, coloring hair, skin, eyes, fairy wings, etc. To mastering gems of all kinds and even making items appear to be metal. We all know that can be a tricky thing to achieve! This book is easy to understand and extremely helpful. The author lays everything out in brilliant color for you and gives you places to practice all of the tutorials. I wish I could give it 10 stars!

It covers everything from basic blending and shading techniques, to more advanced drawing techniques, with spots to practice what you’ve learned. It also has a lot of tips for coloring elements found in most of the popular adult coloring books, such as fairies, gems, flowers, and crystals. There are several blank coloring charts in the back, which happened to be in need of. I followed along with the steps for drawing an eye and lips and they turned out amazing, especially since I’ve never drawn them on my own before!

She is a well-known educator and consultant and the founder of the Organic Gardener Ltd., which works with families to develop gardens that are beautiful, productive, and uniquely suited to their homes and lifestyles. She also works extensively with schools, restaurants, not-for-profit organizations, and other institutions. In partnership with Green City Market, she designed, installed, and maintains the Edible Gardens, a five-thousand-square-foot vegetable garden for children in Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo. This is a superior educational book though it is less how-to than how-the-author-did-it. It is very well written and edited, inspiring, personal and touching. I've gardened most seasons for seventy years and I gained a lot from the helpful information at the end of this book. I will keep it handy as a reference.

An engaging story about a woman's journey to quench her thirst for purpose and fulfillment woven with excellent info on gardening and growing, community improvement, and respect for the land. I keep it handy on my kindle for reference- it has a great reference section in the back for growing vegetables, healthy soil techniques, products, gardening with kids, books, mags and websites, organizations, and the sustainable food movement.

I couldn’t put the book down. Jeanne tells her entire life story from her sexual encounters to the pioneering career steps creating the organic gardener. I loved this book

Enjoyable read. Glad she got her life back together.

The honesty in telling of a painful experience which becomes an opportunity to find a passion for making a difference in the world. While the author learned about organic gardening, a better way to eat and live, and how to involve others in the lessons she learned----I finished this book with a understanding of how I personally can find a richer, healthier way to garden and to bring that pleasure to my own home.

Love this book. Could not wait to receive it. Have yet to make anything out of it. Directs look easy enough to me and I don't see any problems making the little animals I want to make for my grandkids.

While these patterns may be cute, the directions are the worst I've ever had to deal with. Figuring them out involved a good deal of time and frustration, and for some this meant just ignoring the directions. I'm not sure which is the more ridiculous feature of this book - the fact that it directs you to attach a leg to the middle of the frog's back, or that it teaches basic peyote stitch but doesn't bother to explain what they might mean by "connect and decrease." The fish pattern has one bead missing on half of the fish, which would have resulted in a hole in the fish's back if I hadn't noticed and corrected it, but then it got worse. When trying to join the sides together, I realized that the rows in the tail were long opposite long, and short opposite short, instead of alternating. There was no way to 'zip' the sides together. Without going back and reworking the tail, it would result in either a flat tail with bumps, or a 3D tail with holes in it! Also, one side was a row longer than the other! Luckily, I've been beading long enough to figure out how to fix it, but I don't think I should have to fix patterns that I've paid for. Very poorly done.

I deeply regret not reading all of the reviews before purchasing this book, if i had i would never have wasted my money on it. The book assumes that the reader is already an advanced beader that knows the peyote stitch like the back of their hand. I had thought it would give detailed instructions on how to create the adorable little animals in this book, i have never been more wrong. There is a section in the front that shows you some very basic peyote stitch, which is fine if all you want to make is a square or rectangle, but the shapes are complex. There is no diagram like i am used to showing you HOW to stitch these complex shapes, there are no clear written directions. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to even START one of these damn things let alone complete it. I plan to look into returning this P.O.S. and if that doesnt work out it is so worthless im thinking i will simply shred and burn it.

I am an experienced beader and I find this book's instructions to be horrible. I could not figure out how to actually start the pattern, so I took it to 4 different experienced beaders and they also could not figure out. I have followed many peyote patterns, both even and odd count, but this book has me totally stumped. I keep telling myself it can't be this difficult, but I'm at a loss to figure out this book. My advice for anyone thinking of purchasing this book would be to pass on it.

I am an experienced beader and this book has the worst directions I have ever come across. The instructions are ridiculously vague and generic. It's not clear how pieces are joined together and the illustrations and photos don't help at all.

My niece LOVES this book! The animals are cute and the illustrations are more helpful than the written text. The text in the book makes some of the instructions a little difficult to follow, but the images are clear and self-explanatory. She uses this book often to make adorable little critters. She's even combining projects to make her own animals. I'm glad we bought it. :)

I agreed with other puttingup the review. If you are not very experience with beadworking or peyote stitch yet you may want to try some easier project before starting with this book. I haven't try any of it yet but the illustration is clear enough for me becuase I had been beading for years and I do some 3d beading project before so it was not that hard to get a hold of this. Another book to start with possibly will be the Beaded Boxes. It is a very well illustrated book.

Basic instructions for even and odd peyote stitch are given at the beginning of the book, but in the patterns themselves the instructions are merely "weave body." The pattern instructions do not even indicate whether you are doing an even or odd count. There are beading charts, but there again, unless you are very comfortable reading basic charts, they aren't very helpful. If you've looked at patterns on Pinterest, you've probably noticed many of them include stitching directions for your thread or have numbered the beads. This book doesn't do that.

disclaimer: I am an intermediate beader, and can do advanced projects if the directions are really well written. This book is an intermediate book.Suzanne does it again, and this one gives me a little zoo of some of my favorite animals! Using primarily peyote stitch (with easy, well-marked drops where the piece is supossed to narrow) Each animal shown includes directions for several other color options, with one color option as the book's example, and the bead lists for other options listed but without a graph. The graphs are easy to follow, and after you've made an animal or two, you'll be able to make without seeming themYou can make key chains mobiles, pendants or a simple zoo for your very favorite kid using this book. As for me, I could have gotten the value for the whole book by using the turtle pattern alone.
