This Nutshell covers the law of professional responsibility. Going beyond black letter law, the authors discuss trends, topics and issues in professional responsibility facing the lawyer today.I am a big fan of the Nutshell series. They are generally well written, and go nice job of bridging the case law with meaningful analysis to the black letter law.The three key books in the study of law - a casebook, a Nutshell, and a black letter review book (like Gilbert of Emanuel). This Nutshell will certainly help you understand the Law or Professional Responsibility better.
I am very satisfied with my purchase. Item as described by the seller.

About the Author
William Strunk, Jr. first used his own book, The Elements of Style, in 1919 for his English 8 course at Cornell University. The book was published in 1935 by Oliver Strunk. E. B. White was a student in Professor Strunk's class at Cornell, and used "the little book" for himself. Commissioned by Macmillan to revise Strunk's book, White edited the 1959 and 1972 editions of The Elements of Style.

I purchased the ebook The Elements of Style. It has the fourth edition cover, but it's actually the free Project Gutenberg 1st edition, written solely by William Strunk Jr in 1918. It is dishonest for Amazon to sell this; I called customer service and obtained a refund.
This publication of the book is sub par quality. It looks like someone found the text of the original Elements of Style online, copied and pasted it into Word, printed it, and bound it together in a cheap cover. There are even "track changes" edits throughout the book! The formatting is a mess everywhere with large unexplained spaces and gaps. This is truly an unacceptable product and should not even be sold. It is false advertising and I am returning it immediately with a complaint to Amazon.I gave it three stars so people would be more likely to read my review. DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION!! ISBN-13 9781537669649
Don't buy this kindle version, it's full of formatting errors. A shame to see a grammar book trashed like this. I had to ask for a refund. Look somewhere else.
Thumbnail shows 4th edition cover; ebook is actually the Project Gutenberg that is "for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost."
I've read two different editions of this book - I borrowed the 6th? 7th? edition (the one with the blue cover that is expanded) and I own the 3rd edition (which is not expanded). Let me tell you, this slim book packs a powerful punch. I've always struggled with being concise in my writing, and this book is THE book to help you maximize your writing. It should be required in high schools everywhere.Back when I worked for a newspaper, one of my editors was trying to get a review of mine on a particular page, which meant he needed to edit a little bit out ... he came back and told me - I couldn't edit your review. Every word was essential. - YES. Thank you, Strunk & White.
This review isn't to the content of the book, but about the Kindle Edition. The book I downloaded had the cover for the Strunk and E.B. White version, Fourth Edition but was actually the 1920 edition with the wrong cover. So just wanted to give potential readers of this book a head's up that if you want to buy this book on Kindle, do the "Look Inside" preview to make sure the edition matches the cover and description.
First published in 1920, this definitive text on English grammar and composition answers most style questions in approximately 100 pages. There have been countless other efforts since this one, often with hundreds more pages, but none do it better. It answers the basic questions any writer occasionally encounters-comma usage, clauses, paragraphs and construction. Despite the fact it's been nearly 100 years since this book was written, it's never been rendered obsolete. It doesn't matter if your field is business or creative writing, the rules of structure still apply. The English language is imprecise and difficult to master but without understanding the elements of it then properly constructing anything from an email to a thesis or novel will not occur. In these days of emojis and alphabetical shortcuts, we are losing the battle of writing proper sentences but this book, if studied, will remind us of how important the written word is and how to make it understandable. A must read for anyone interested in writing well.
The famous, beloved version of this book is the version by *Strunk and White* (written a hundred years ago by William Strunk and – importantly – updated by E.B. White), and that's what this product is pretending to be (worse, actually, it's pretending to be the version illustrated by Maira Kalman). In fact, the Kindle version presented here was neither updated by E.B. White nor illustrated by Maira Kalman; it's just the old public domain text.

I'm a huge fan of the Omnivores Dilemma and recommended it to more people than any other book I've read so `In Defense of Food' had a lot to live up to but somewhere something what badly haywire.American's are getting fatter and fatter with average life spans that are considerably out of sync with the wealth of our nation. `In Defense of Food' takes an outsiders view of nutrition in the U.S., throwing stones at the establishment including nutritionists, food manufacturers and the FDA. Michael Pollan's argument is that it is our very obsession with food that throws the system off and we need to just relax and enjoy food. It sounds like the same advice being expounded in the book about how French women are supposedly never fat. Unfortunately we can't relax because we are constantly bombarded with calorie dense foods specifically designed for massive consumption. The author's suggestion is to step back, avoid the processed foods and start spending more on `whole foods' and items purchased from local farmers markets. The main emphasis in the book is on eating a `traditional' diet. Something great-grandmother might have created. The author blames `western diseases' on a `western diet' but it's hard to know what constitutes a western diet, after all, three of the countries he suggests emulating are France, Italy and Greece. Are they not western? American's are definitely growing fatter but if it's due to synthetic substances like Margarine, Crisco and Nutrasweet why have American waistlines continue to grow as these substances have grown decreasingly popular? And if eating natural food is the magic elixir why do I find overweight farmers at my local farmers market? Shouldn't they all be aglow with vitality living to 120?My wife is from Malaysia and her fathers' parents consumed a very `traditional' Chinese diet all their lives and yet died in there early 60's. Her grandmother passed away from a stroke brought on by high blood pressure and her grandfather by a heart attack. The way Michael Pollan talks this doesn't sound possible. I would also say that for an author who insists on taking a holistic view of eating as opposed to a reductionist one he completely omits taking into account cultural lifestyles in people heaths. Perhaps it's the high quality health care system in France that makes the difference or perhaps not but the author never even considers anything but consumption. The advice that Michael Pollan gives is sound but most of it is so simple that it could probably fit into a pamphlet rather than a 200 page book which may explain why the book seems to veer off into unnecessary directions. Eating more vegetables is always good advice and the author even admits that every hated nutritionist he's talked has offered exactly that advice so how exactly is Mr. Pollan different from nutritionists? He lambastes nutritionists for taking a reductionist view of nutrition but then goes on at length about maintaining a proper balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 in your diet. Did great-grandmother worry about the ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 in the food she served?Morgan Spurlock of `Supersize Me' probably hit the nail right on the head. It's the amount of calories that American's eat that's doing us in. Avoiding synthetic foods is probably good advice but it's advice like avoiding swimming after eating a meal and not likely to make much of a change in your life. I lost 50 pounds last year and it had nothing to do with eating traditional meals or avoiding margarine. I reduced my intake of calorie dense food including soda and fast food. This is the kind of advice any nutritionist will give out. What bothered me most about this book was how Michael Pollan went on the attack when none of his advice is that far off from what other nutritionists and dieticians are recommending. It's a decent book but lacks focus and has difficulty defining what he's talking about when he uses terms like `Western' and `Traditional' diets. Quite frankly, this book is more of just a subset of Omnivores Dilemma and if you've read that one you could probably skip this one.
I have a medical and science background...so traced references cited....everything checks out. Recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis at age 63 and weight 284 pounds. Read this book the first week of January.....went shopping for real foods the second week of January. Find it satisfying to eat no more than 4 oz of red meat 2-3 times a week....salmon, mackeral, sardines 2-3 times a week....and a couple of days with no meat...just veggie omega 3 sources. Have re-read the book....highlighted...added notes on all pages...and bought 2 more copies for my 30 and 21 year olds...both who grew up in the age of "nutritionism" with all its false information. Following Pollan's common sense advice....paying the extra for organic basic veggies and olive oil. Decided to eliminate all wheat and corn until I loose the weight I've set as a goal.Five weeks eating 3 meals a day...and by week two much of the chronic 24 hour a day pain was gone and I began walking the elliptical and the woods. Five weeks and 30 pounds lighter....with more energy than I've had in 20 years. Buy this book, learn it, live it, tell your loved ones.
Well-organized and well-written, this book covers how we got to where we are, buying processed foods labeled with various health claims that are meaningless. We find out about the rise of the nutrition industry and how they’ve led us astray. We’ve all heard that fresh, less-processed is better, but the author does an excellent job of explaining why. Living in Switzerland decades ago, I said, half jokingly with no scientific basis in my head, that the cheese and chocolate was excellent because of happy cows, all roaming the hillsides looking content indeed. The author validates my offhand comment and explains the science behind it. I’ve been buying eggs from pasture grazed hens, for the sake of the hens. The author tells us that the nutrition content of eggs from grass-grazed eggs is vastly different from those of grain-fed hens. I’ve been buying grass-fed beef after cringing at the conditions in El Paso and Central California feed lots after driving past, again for the cows’ sake. The author explains how the meat from grain fed cows is very different nutritionally from naturally grass-grazing cows. Interesting how consideration and care for the animals in our food supply chain dovetails with our own health. This book is a must read for anyone who believes that what you eat effects your health and wants a simple framework for making better eating choices.
This book was life-changing for me! I found Pollan's writing style to be thoughtful, clear, and relatable. And I can't tell you how many times "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." has run through my head in the years since first reading it. I appreciate how he challenges so much of what we hear about diet -- every time researchers think they have the key to nutrition or weight loss, something new is discovered to turn it on its head. The book helped me explore my interest in more traditional diets made up of pure/whole foods, leave behind food-like (and gimmicky) products in the stores, and switch to cooking & baking from scratch. After reading it, I was inspired to buy a grain mill for my kitchen so I could grind my own flour and truly bake from scratch using whole grain flour (and wrote a get-started guide to help others do the same). Being able to control what goes into my food has improved my health and energy. I can't recommend this book enough.I also like the companion book "Food Rules" Food Rules: An Eater's Manual, which I'd recommend if you want a brief "just tell me what to do" book. But for more detailed information that may help you change your food and eating mindset, "In Defense of Food" is the way to go.

This book is simply the best description of a person's first year experience in law school, although I still have a nostalgia on this topic for "The Bramble Bush" by Karl Llewellyn. Turow was uniquely qualified to write about it: he had spent several years teaching at Stanford before heading off to law school and had engaged to write a book even before he started at Harvard. He then kept notes during that 1L year and wrote the book immediately afterward. Hence, he was an experienced writer who planned well and then wrote the book while the events of the prior year were fresh in his mind.In my case, I graduated law school 25 years ago, but recently completed the LLM & SJD degrees. While this book describes law school culture prevalent back in "my day," I've also seen an immense cultural shift in law schools over the past years. Thus, some of the "hard" aspects of the 1L experience have softened a bit, but certain things have not (e.g., student anxiety).
Someone interviewed in "The New York Times" brought this book to my attention as a classic, real-life Bildungsroman of life at Harvard Law in the late twentieth century. I bought and read it, not because I am a lawyer or aspire to such, but because I am a professional academic who teaches in a different kind of professional school. I wanted a sense of what law school was like for its students, that I might compare it with my own experience and that of others in post-baccalaureate education. Because I knew Scott Turow to be a good writer, I expected a tale well told. "One L" did not disappoint. I agree with other reviewers that the book starts out strong but by the end peters out: in part, because the fresh-faced novice has found his footing (and we knew from the start that he wouldn't flunk out); in part, because this is reality, not a fiction that Turow could confect with a nice twist at the tale's end. However: if you purchase the 2010 reprint, you will enjoy the pleasure of Turow's retrospective insights on his experience, the book's original reception, and how much has changed or remained the same, for good or ill, in high-octane legal education.
Unlike many autobiographical work, I find One L to be relatively honest and open.Because it is non-fiction, the circumstances make it an interesting read in the beginning, but it does not have a plot nor a direction, nothing really gets 'developed' and once you are acquainted with the setting, it becomes less interesting towards the end. I had to google the author (I didn't know who he was) and only after reading his Wiki entry could I motivate myself to finish the book. Also, I am reading it as a thirty-something who's had more life experience than the author did at the point of his writing. Thus some of the difficulties he faced are things I can identify with but consider trivial now. It may be more interesting and useful as a heads up to a slightly younger audience.
I feel like I've been through law school myself, or at least the first year thereof. I have some reverse snobbery about attending Harvard. He may very well have received a better education in California, for heaven's sake. Twenty five years have elapsed since this book was written; has there been any improvement? But Turow grinds his argument to bits, discussing every subtle permutation until you want to scream "stop!" I was growing tired of his style at the end of the book. Perhaps his novels are better.
I enjoyed every page of this book, which is an autobiographical story of his first year at Harvard law school. I was surprised by the hours they studied and the intensity of their work and enjoyed his description of his fellow students and their lives. This book was so well written and of course Scott Turow has gone on to write Presumed Innocent and other gripping novels, sold internationally, and in film.
ONE L is the first-hand account of the 1975-76 beginning year of Harvard Law student turned lawyer turned best-selling author Scott Turow. Turow accurately recreates the insanity of the year by exposing how utterly selfish everyone is or becomes because of the desire to be the best. The professors are driven by ego, the students are driven by fear and greed. Turow realizes that despite his best liberal attempts to stay above the fray that he too wishes to be one of those who finishes on top of the first year grades and thus make the Harvard Review. Well-written, very engaging (although a little too long), and all too real, Turow's book remains the classic to read for those entering LS.
It's a good story. As I read it I kept wondering if anyone who hadn't been to law school would like it. I am going to have my dad, who hasn't been to law school, read it and see. I personally am in my second year and read this book on the two weeks I had off from classes. Despite 38 years going by between him writing this and my first year, I must say, not much seems to have changed in legal education. I could relate to so may of the stories, fears and thoughts running through his head. I felt like the last half dragged a little, but maybe that was him adapting to the lifestyle and having the shock wear off. Overall I enjoyed it, I found myself saving sections to read to my fellow classmates, a fun bonding tool.
I think it's a rite of passage to read this book. I got it for Kindle before law school. I actually made the Kindle read it to me while I drove in the car. It's basically a memoir of a terrifying first year experience that will prepare you for the worst and help you realize that you can survive. Most law school professors aren't that terrifying anymore (although some still are), but the first year is terrifying no matter what. It can be good to read and you won't be the first or the last to read it, but you don't actually HAVE to read it.

Review
— Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Fantastic. . . . This useful and accessible academic work provides Christians a compassionate, coherent approach to the pressing problem of how religious difference should be handled in a secular society."Shadi Hamid — author of Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle over Islam Is Reshaping the World “This is a wonderfully written, ambitious, and urgent work of theology, ethics, and political theory. It rings with unusual vitality and passion.”Jonathan Chaplin — author of Multiculturalism: A Christian Retrieval “A pathbreaking, theologically rich Christian intervention into contemporary public debates over the place of Muslims in western societies. . . . Matthew Kaemingk has pulled off a feat many would have thought impossible.”Joshua Ralston — University of Edinburgh “Through an in-depth, critical engagement with Abraham Kuyper’s theological ethics, Matthew Kaemingk shows why and how commitment to Jesus Christ should issue in a political pluralism marked by hospitality to and solidarity with Muslim neighbors.”Kevin den Dulk —Calvin College “Kaemingk is a winsome guide through difficult terrain. He avoids the easy dead-ends—assimilate or stay out—that too often shape responses to the real challenges of Muslim immigration in western democracies. But he also doesn’t assume that we’ll find our way somewhere in the middle of those opposing poles. Instead, he charts an alternative course, using a theological map that takes pluralism seriously. Along the way, he stays grounded in real-world experience while never losing sight of basic convictions. The result: A book that is both timely and compelling.”Kristen Deede Johnson — Western Theological Seminary “While engaging lived realities and introducing us to actual people impacted by those lived realities, Matthew Kaemingk provides a compelling vision for Christian faith to serve as a bridge, not a barrier, to loving the many different neighbors we live alongside within our contemporary pluralistic context. This extraordinary book is of tremendous import for the big questions the church needs to ask in this complex cultural moment; at the same time it affirms the significance of the small, daily ways Christians can love their neighbors through their regular lives and callings. I wish all Western Christians would engage with Kaemingk’s exceptionally readable and timely book as they wrestle with what it means to be a Christian called to love with generous hospitality in our pluralistic culture.”Jordan J. Ballor — Acton Institute “In this compelling work Matthew Kaemingk asks what Amsterdam has to do with Mecca, and the answers he finds turn out to have implications the world over. . . . The charity and clarity on display here will challenge Christians to think more deeply, and to act more responsibly, in response to the call to live peacefully and faithfully with Muslim neighbors.”

You must read this book. When I first purchased it in January, I suggested that this volume may prove to be the most important book of 2018. Now that I have finished it, I believe that it is one of the more important theological contributions of this generation.Kaemingk writes with a clarity and conciseness that is hard to find, which allows him to cover a lot of ground in these 300 pages. This volume treats such diverse disciplines as sociology, anthropology, political theology, soteriology, ethics, and Christian mission, among others. While the focus of the book is the question of Muslim immigration and an appropriate Christian response, it has broader application to a variety of questions pressing the American Evangelical today.Again, at the risk of sounding over-the-top, I believe this is a crucially important volume to read. Evangelicals need to rethink our position and engagement in American society. This volume offers a thoroughly biblical and deeply thoughtful path for us to follow. My hat is off to Dr. Kaemingk.
I hope this gets a wide-circulation. A valuable resource for all of us. It's important to realize how fear can play into our politics and even Christian faith. Let's get the facts and Biblical storyline to be informed.
I was deeply touched by this book and couldn’t put it down. Though my theological journey has led to a different definition of some aspects of pluralism, this is a vivid and lucid witness that I affirm. It offers light and guidance on a troubling and urgent subject. I hope people will take the time to read this thoughtful theological study. In the light of all the Islamophobia in the world, and in our nation's leadership, I only hope it is not too late.
Very insightful and thought provoking
Comprehensive. True. Timely. Powerful. Comprehensive: Kaemingk doesn't just tell Christians what to do. He lays out an ambitious framework for why. Why should Christians react with hospitality? Why should Christians support pluralistic policies and attitudes? Why should we be suspicious of relativism on the left and fear on the right? He gives the theology and historical context of his Christian pluralism space to grow and flourish. He doesn't languish in the minutiae, nor does he rush through the groundwork that is so essential for his argument. True: this book makes a convincing argument. Sincere Christians will find a severe challenge here as well as plenty to evoke hearty "Amen"s. This will be true for readers who identify themselves on the right or the left when it comes to theological and political questions. Whether it is his incisive analysis of modern political theology or his more intimate look at worship and how it forms the local community, Kaemingk simply brings a good word. Timely: the topic of Muslim immigration is heated and full of landmines. Kaemingk dives right into it - providing powerfully memorable stories to pull his reader along. In this book Kaemingk never leads us too far from the practical implications and haunting questions of Muslim-Christian relations. So this book could not be more timely. He spends time giving us the macro-level story of immigration, while reminding us of how this isn't some far-off hypothetical ethical conundrum dreamed up in an ivory tower. These are questions that affect our neighbors and our worship and our witness as Christians here and now. Powerful: the book begins with pictures of the chaos and fear that permeate these debates. It is an urgent topic. And we feel that in our guts. As the book closes, however, Kaemingk also introduces us to more tender, hopeful moments that can inspire Christian action: friends sharing a meal or conversation, a church warmly inviting people from another culture to cook for them and share their culture. Hearts and minds will be edified and, I dare say, transformed in wrestling with this necessary book. This is a cool head, warm heart, and promising "third way" in an age dominated by fear.
I am a pastor and also lead a refugee resettlement office in WA state. For those of us who work at the intersection of the church, public policy, and Muslim immigrants, this book is an excellent resource. Dr. Kaemingk carefully lays the historical and theological footing for followers of Jesus to walk the straight and narrow path of loving our Muslim neighbors. It is this path, of grace and truth, that can lead all of us to a more just and hospitable society. He draws from a careful examination of the Netherlands, which is about 15 years ahead of the US in experiencing a wave of Muslim immigration. I really appreciate that Dr. Kaemingk is honest about the challenges that come with immigrants who have different social practices and theological ideas then the dominant culture they enter. His suggestions for an appropriate Christian response are not wishful platitudes but rather real life, practical and very biblical actions. I will be sharing this book with others in my church and other pastors in my area because it does what all good theology does - it shows us how to faithfully live as followers of Jesus who bring the Bible to bear on real world issues that affect our society right now. Another great book this reminds me of is Evelyne Reisacher’s “Joyful Witness In the Muslim Worldâ€.
I cannot say enough about how important this book is. It helps us imagine what it looks like as Christians to be deeply rooted in Christ as we love our neighbors from very different religious and cultural backgrounds by looking at how this is happening in other cultural settings, exploring Scripture and our understanding of Christ in relation to pluralism, reminding us of the importance of worship in our formation as Christians, and inviting us to consider stories of real people trying their best to honor Christ and embody hospitality in their daily lives and callings. It's exceptionally readable and inviting. I can imagine those in ministry reading this book as they seek a vision for how to live and how to encourage those in their ministries to live faithfully as Christians in a complicated cultural time, it would be great for a thoughtful book group to discuss, and should get lots of classroom use in Christian higher ed.

This volume is actually a combination of two books each containing three stories of about a hundred pages: Black Beauty's Clan, and Black Beauty's Family. Clan covers Black Ebony, who starts out as a hunter; Black Princess, who spent time as an officer's charger in the Great War (WWI); and Black Velvet who was a showjumper at a time when riding styles were changing. In Family, Nightshade goes from racehorse to highwayman's mount; Black Romany meets Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; and Blossom sufferers from the British disdain for piebald horses. As in Sewell's original Black Beauty, each horse moves though a variety of owners, good and bad, before reaching their happy ending, although friends along the way often fail to get their own (remember Ginger) The period details are marvelous, both the great - as where Ebony becomes a pit pony and later pulls bathing machines - and small - the fashion for children to roll hoops (a threat to horses if they roll underfoot) and the flagman leading the automobile, which later that year would be permitted to travel at FOURTEEN miles an hour instead of the then-legal FOUR, and no flagman would be required to warn horsemen of the car's approach. For children's books, I think these are very well written, although they do contain, as the original did, both death and violence (beating of horses and such), they also contain numerous examples of patience and love.
The three Pullein-Thompsons sisters created a marvellous book in this and its counterpart, Black Beauty's Clan. Each sister tells a story of a horse related to Black Beauty, whether a highwayman's horse, a carthorse, a hunter or a racehorse. Black Ebony, Black Velvet, Blossom and other horses spring to life and show us what times were like and how horses lived and worked.I highly recommend these two books. I have seen one portion sold as a separate small book but all three tales complement each other and it would be very fiddly to try to collect all six separately, if they were even all published that way.The Pullein-Thompsons were sisters who grew up between the wars, when horses were in daily use, and during the second world war they taught riding extensively as there was very little petrol so horses were put back in use. Their own story is told by themselves in Fair Girls On Grey Horses. They have all written horsey books but to my mind the best writer was Christine.Another book like this was Son of Black Beauty by Phyllis Briggs.
Great stories however its a little bizare because Black Beauty is a gelding (No able to reproduce) However that aside these are wonderful stories that are well written and thoroughly enjoyable. I wish more of the Pullen Thompson stories would be put onto kindle as they are truely classic horse stories
I LOVE this book!

#1,481,855 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
I first tried to learn Perl by using the other O'Reilly book, "Programming Perl". I was completely lost. Then I found this book and my second attempt was much more successful. This book is great for self-teaching, and the book chapters should be read in order as each chapter builds on previous ones. Each chapter has plenty of good programming exercises with answers in the back of the book. I review this book in the context of the table of contents.Chapter 1. IntroductionThis chapter answers basic questions such as how to get and install Perl, how to construct a basic Perl program, and then takes you on a whirlwind tour of Perl.Chapter 2. Scalar DataAs a general rule, when Perl has just one of something, that's a scalar, which is the topic of this chapter.Chapter 3. Lists and ArraysIf a scalar is the "singular" in Perl, as described at the beginning of Chapter 2, the "plural" in Perl is represented by lists and arrays. A list is an ordered collection of scalars. An array is a variable that contains a list. In Perl, the two terms are often used as if they're interchangeable. But, to be accurate, the list is the data, and the array is the variable. You learn about these differences through practical code examples in this chapter.Chapter 4. SubroutinesYou've now seen and used some of the built-in system functions, such as chomp, reverse, and print. But, as other languages do, Perl has the ability to make subroutines. The name of a subroutine is another Perl identifier occasionally with an optional ampersand in front. There's a rule about when you can omit the ampersand and when you cannot, and that rule is discussed.Chapter 5. Input and OutputThis chapter covers the 80% of the I/O you'll need for most programs. If you're familiar with the workings of standard input, output, and error streams, you're ahead of the game. If not, you get you caught up by the end of this chapter.Chapter 6. HashesIn this chapter, you will see a feature that makes Perl one of the world's great programming languages--hashes. Though hashes are a powerful and useful feature, you may have used other powerful languages for years without ever hearing of hashes. But you'll use hashes in nearly every Perl program you'll write from now on; they're that important.A hash is a data structure like an array, in that it can hold any number of values and retrieve these values at will. However, instead of indexing the values by number, as in arrays, you look up the values by name. That is, the indices aren't numbers but are arbitrary unique strings.Chapter 7. In the World of Regular ExpressionsPerl has many features that set it apart from other languages. Of all those features, one of the most important is its strong support for regular expressions. These allow fast, flexible, and reliable string handling. But that power comes at a price. Regular expressions are tiny programs in their own special language, built inside Perl. This means that you're about to learn another programming language, although, fortunately, it's a simple one. In this chapter, you'll visit the world of regular expressions, where, for the most part, you can forget about the world of Perl.Chapter 8. Matching with Regular ExpressionsIn the previous chapter, you visited the world of regular expressions. Now you'll see how that world fits into the world of Perl.Chapter 9. Processing Text with Regular ExpressionsYou can use regular expressions to change text, too. So far, the book has only shown you how to match a pattern. Now, you'll learn how to use patterns to locate the parts of strings that you want to change.Chapter 10. More Control StructuresIn this chapter, you'll see some alternative ways to write Perl code. For the most part, these techniques don't make the language more powerful, but they make it easier or more convenient to get the job done. You don't have to use these techniques in your own code, but don't skip this chapter. You're certain to see these control structures in other people's code, sooner or later.Chapter 11. File TestsEarlier, this book showed how to open a filehandle for output. Normally, that will create a new file, wiping out any existing file with the same name. Perhaps you want to check that there isn't a file by that name. Perhaps you need to know how old a given file is, or perhaps you want to go through a list of files to find which ones are larger than a certain number of bytes and not accessed for a certain amount of time. Perl has a complete set of tests you can use to find information about files, and that is the topic of this chapter.Chapter 12. Directory OperationsThe files created in the previous chapter were generally in the same place as your program. But modern operating systems let you organize files into directories, allowing you to keep your MP3 files away from your important work files so you don't accidentally send an MP3 file to your boss. In this chapter you'll see how Perl lets you manipulate these directories directly, in ways that are even fairly portable from one operating system to another.Chapter 13. Strings and SortingPerl is designed to be good at solving programming problems that are about 90% working with text and 10% everything else. So it's no surprise that Perl has strong text-processing abilities, including all that can be done with regular expressions. But sometimes the regular expression engine is too fancy, and you need a simpler way of working with a string, as you'll see in this chapter.Chapter 14. Process ManagementOne of the best parts of being a programmer is launching someone else's code so you don't have to write it yourself. This chapter shows how to manage your child processes by launching other programs directly from Perl. The examples in this chapter are primarily Unix-based; if you have a non-Unix system, expect to see some differences.Chapter 15. Perl ModulesThere is a lot more to Perl than what is in this book, and there are a lot of people doing a lot of interesting things with Perl. If there is a problem to solve, then somebody has probably already solved it and made their solution available on the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN), which is a worldwide collection of servers and mirrors containing thousands of modules of reusable Perl code. If you want to learn how to write modules, consult the "Alpaca book". In this chapter, you learn how to use modules that already exist.Chapter 16. Some Advanced Perl TechniquesThe techniques in this chapter are only "advanced" in the sense that they aren't necessary for beginners. The first time you read this book, you may want to either skip or skim this chapter so you can get right to using Perl. Then come back to it later when you're ready to get more out of Perl.Appendix A - Exercise AnswersAppendix B - Beyond the Llama
First of all, this book is only the beginning. It does teach the basics including arrays, scalars, functions and many other topics that are central to a basic understanding of Perl. It also covers regular expressions which aside from the great swatch of modules is one of Perl's greatest strengths.Because of that and the teaching style this book earns the 5 star rating.Toward the end it hints at some of the other 'required' topics such as references, modules and objects. After you've read this book get a copy of Intermediate Perl to read up on those topics.
I purchased this book hoping to gain insight into Perl after having experience with C, C++ and Java. I came back with not only a wonderful, base knowledge of the principals of Perl, but came out with some other skills as well. This books provides a wonderful, quick, easy read for beginners and pros alike. The knowledge of the language coupled with the coverage of core concepts, methodology, practices and practical programmatic thinking was a delight to read/review.
Great book and well written.... Even for the SE, such as myself this helps bring back some things that I have forgotten or needed a refresh on.
I have experience programing, but some of the other Perl beginner books try toput too much in a book for beginres in Perl. This book covers all the basics for someone new to the language
I have programmed in Python and a little bit in C and I think this book is great - and so is perl. I already knew a little bit about perl from reading a Wikipedia article and looking at the perldoc documentation, but Learning Perl taught my some very useful things that I would have never found alone (splicing, nongreedy regexes, just to name a few). perl has amazing support for I/O, and the book helped me understand regexes and file I/O. I found both perl and this book to be good for other things, too. I wrote a logging program that wrote logs with timestamps, for example. Other things I used this book and perl for included a calculator, a text-to-HTML conversion program, and a password cracker. Learning Perl helped me uncover some bugs in my programs, taught me many new things, and was also just a fun read. The only thing I would add would be more about OOP (Object Oriented Programming). I found the TOC (Table of Contents) to be very well done and the e-book version had links to the proper sections. I could find anything quite quickly with the excellent TOC.
How can you program Perl without this book? After years I still use it from time to time when I have a brain fade regarding some common syntax issue.
I had a physical copy of this book that I loaned to a coworker and her dogs got it and destroyed it. This book is an excellent resource not only for learning Perl, but also for using as a quick reference down the road.
