Karl Keating dives into the lives of John Henry Newman, Hilaire Belloc, Ronald Knox, and more--and takes a look into their most famous works and apologetic encounters. He not only details their backgrounds and biographies, but their most famous apologetic encounters as well. I would say that this book is more of a history/biography of theological controversies and the men who took them on than an actual guide to the apologetic methods of refuting attacks on the Catholic faith.If you're interested in the history behind these debates, this book is for you. Keating successfully allows the writings of the men themselves to "tell the story" behind the altercations, which allows the reader to dive into the source texts. Everything is faithfully footnoted and cited, which makes for easy studying. Recommended for Catholics interested in modern heology from a historical and "boots on the ground" perspective.

Karl Keating's book titled CONTROVERSIES showed how knowledge and logic can undermine distortion, false assumptions, and false history. The debates between Catholic scholars and anti-Catholic critics showed the precision of thought and knowledge of serious Catholics when confronted by propaganda. The book is a reminder what can happen when men are too conceited and apathetic in their attacks on Catholicism especially in Great Britain.The first controversy was a debate between Charles Kingsley(1819-1875)and Cardinal John Henry Newman(1801-1890). Kingsley tried to claim that Catholic clergy were not concerned with truth and that Newman held to the same view in spite of the fact Kingsley should have known better than to make such a statement. Newman DEMANDED that Kingsley either prove his assertions or admit that he (Kingsley)was wrong. Kingsley blundered by either evading the false claims or inventing new ones. What may have stunned Kingsley was how determined and careful Newman was by insisting that Kingsley admit his error(s). Kingsley could not recover from the fact that a Catholic (a convert)showed Kingsley false statements as bluff and sloppy thinking.The next sections of the book focused on Hiliaire Belloc (1870-1953). Belloc disputed Haldane (1892-1964)who was a Communist. Part of the debate concentrated on Haldane's support for the Soviet "scientist" Lysenko (1898-1976)who opposed Father Mendel's (1822-1884)theory of genetics. While the debate was polite, the fact Lysenko's sloppy thinking has collapsed and that Father Mendel's theory has been upheld should settle the debate.Belloc also disputed Dean Inge (1860-1954)re the misunderstanding of the Real Presence and the Immaculate Conception. Belloc also undermined Inge's view that the Catholic Church was "foreign" to Great Britain. Belloc reminded Inge and other readers by emphasizing the contributions of Catholicism to English Civilization. Belloc showed that after the Catholic Church was established in England c 597 AD, the people of the British Isles acquired learning, architecture,farming, etc. Catholic England included Chaucer (1340-1400), St. Anselm (1035-1109),Canon Law, Common Law,etc. In other words, Catholicism was historically crucial to the people of the British Isles. Belloc also cited St. Bede (670-735)and St. Thomas More (1478-1536)as examples of those Catholics who were important English historical figures. Belloc could have also cited the Irish Celtic Catholic Church which was established earlier.Another controversy was between Knox (1888-1957)and Lunn 1888-1974). Lunn could not explain why so many people supported the Catholic Faith which seemed so unreasonable. Lunn was an agnostic at the time. However, Knox demonstrated that men of intellectual achievement contributed so much to Catholicism. One could guess the Father Knox won the debate when he received Lunn into the Catholic Faith. What may have caused Lunn to change his mind was Knox's reference to the historic Catholic Church which should impress men regardless of their religious preferences.Later Lunn defended the Catholic Church when some Englishmen chided the Catholic Church for all the evils in history. Lunn reminded readers that Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922)worked feverishly to avoid W.W. I while the British House of Lords did NOTHING to stop that terrible war. H.G. Wells (1866-1946)was so anti-Catholic that during W.W. II, he wanted the "allies" to bomb Rome and the Vatican in spite of the invaluable aid Catholics gave to save European refugees. Lunn also raised other hard questions. Catholics were supposedly against science. However, Lunn reminded readers that the Catholic Book Club of American marketed books on mathematics and sciences.Many Catholic scholars have not been intimidated by "popular opinion." Father Thurston, S.J. (1856-1939)underminded the false history of a popular book by Prof. Lea. Lea's book had errors re the history of the Catholic Sacraments and litergy. Coulton (1858-1947)challenged Father Thurston to find ten to twelve errors from ten pages of Lea's book, and the page sequence would be chosen from a neutral "referee." Father Thurston, being a thorough Jesuit, did so with ease causing ill will and consternation. When those who tried to mislead readers about the book title, Father Thurston emphasized the book title was Lea's work titled HISTORY OF CONFESSIONS AND INDULGENCES. Basically Father Thurston cited the Catholic Sacraments to early Church History including the time of St. Patrick (c 370-461). Father Thurston showed that the Catholic Church was and is very social and has appealed to so many different peoples.Karl Keating ended this book with a conversation with an auto salesman who tried to impress Keating with a car's sound system. When Keating said he was not interested in a sophisticated sound system, the surprised salesman asked Keating what did Keating do when he drove. Keating responded, "I think." I give this book a 4 star because it got me more interested in the controversies surrounding the conversion of such men as Newman, Lunn and Knox. Unfortunately it is very difficult to find any of the books listed (other than Newman's apologia). I also ran across what I think to be a better summary of the conflict between Thurston and G.G. Coulton over H.C. Lea in Fr. Shannon's "Medieval Inquisition". Undoubtedly the best section in "Controversies" is Thurston's battle with Coulton over Lea. If anyone is interested in the Medieval Inquisition I would recommend Bernard Hamilton and Walter Ullmann (which in my opinion is the only reason to get the Fr. Shannon book as well, for the quotes from Ullman and Thurston).It was nice of Karl Keating to let the authors speak for themselves mostly, keeping his introduction brief and merely setting up the history of the characters. Also, though I am not a fan of Belloc's lack of referencing, I do engoy Belloc's prose and sense of humour. Despite the length, the book is a quick read.

This was a quick read. I finished it in one day. I thought it had some great information, such as how to evaluate prospects to ensure you're not wasting your time, who pays for first dates, and good suggestions for activities that are more interesting and fun than meeting for coffee (i.e. why meeting for coffee is LAME lol). It also talked about protecting your identity online and safety when meeting men in person. Good info there. Downsides: The book could have used a better editor. There were many spelling and grammar mistakes, as well as passages that repeated for no apparent reason. Some of the sample emails provided were cringe-worthy in how cheesy they were! The book only covers through first dates. Finally, I think my biggest issue with the book is that it insists your profile come off as supremely confident and relentlessly cheerful in tone, and that you should immediately discard any men's profiles who don't sound that way. I'm not that way myself! I can probably write a profile that makes it look like I am, but it wouldn't be authentically me. I'm shy and kind of nerdy. I wouldn't want to be dismissed out of hand for that, so why wouldn't I want to give a chance to a guy who might be the same?

It was an easy read with some good tips, the best one was on writing your profile and communicating. The tip I did not care for was given to very overweight woman ( I am not one) She basically said they needed to lose the weight otherwise they will not find a man. It would of been better to mention that there's sites specifically for overweight men and woman. Overall it's a good book and it would be helpful to read it before you start posting your profile.

This is a very good book on this topic. It addresses all phases of the journey into online dating, step by step. The author applies her experience on marketing and communications to online dating. Her advice is specific, sound, and helpful. I like her overall approach to the dating enterprise. I found particularly helpful the worksheets and examples she provides. Thanks Ms Jordan!

Well written, well organized, honest and it completely relates to the reality of dating in your 40s using technology. I've read almost a dozen similar books but this one is by far the best one I've read.

This is someone who understands today's realities and speaks to the issues we face. So far, so good, and I look forward to completing it. There's good advice no matter whether you are looking to meet "the one" or not.

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. I read these books as a child, and now I just got them to read to my 5 year old. I was getting bored reading picture books to my daughter, and I thought this might change up the routine a little bit. I have been reading these to her, and she LOVES them. She loves the stories about Ramona and her antics. Even thought she can't read them herself yet, she loves when I read to her, and these really are the perfect thing to read to a 5 year old. I love it because I get a little more storyline than the usual nightly picture-book, and I think it's great for her reading comprehension abilities as well. Highly recommended.

I absolutely LOVE reading Ramona to my class of 2nd graders. Amazingly, it is still relatable even in 2016. The kiddos absolutely adore the characters, and I love sharing my love of this series with them. :)

My daughter loved this collection. In the week after it arrived, she read 5 of the books in the set, and I was sorta peeved at first. I know it’s great that my daughter reads, especially in this modern era, but books aren’t free. (I don’t trust her with library books. She loves her books a little too well.) So I’m always hoping that it occupies her for awhile. And that’s where this set earns its 5* rating. Most of the books in my daughter’s bookcase are “one and done” sorta books. You spend $20-30 on a boxed set and she blazes through them and they get retired to their place of honor, never to be touched again and certainly never to be donated, traded or recycled. So the stack grows, and more bookcases get constructed.However, not with Ramona. Over the past weeks and months, I have seen her reading and rereading Ramona’s exploits. It’s not uncommon to hear spontaneous bursts of laughter as my daughter explains how Ramona thinks that carpet is a pet that lives in a car. The books are engaging for my 8-year old voracious reader. She relates with the characters and their struggles and sees a piece of herself in both Ramona and her older sister Beezus. It’s obvious that Ms. Cleary’s sense of humor resonates with my daughter, and now the author has the honored place at my daughter’s literary dinner party.“Mom, if I had a dinner party and I invited all of my favorite authors, Beverly Cleary would have a seat next to Ursula K. LeGuin.”

The Ramona books are fabulous! I loved them as a kid, and now my 8-y-o is devouring them. They truly are timeless. I love that Ms. Cleary's most recent book, Ramona's World, is also included. I had never read it and it was a joy to catch up!Beautiful presentation and illustrations, too. The perfect birthday present for an elementary school student.

The Ramona books very realistically depict a little girl coping with being the youngest child in her family & how she tries her best at school, but some times things do not work out well for her, in spite of her great intentions! I read all the books in the mid seventies when I worked in Children's Services in a public library. Many real-life Ramonas came to my programs & they were as lovable as Ramona in the stories. I will re-read these books in the near future.

There are two of the same book (Ramona and her Mother) in the packaged box set. Therefore it is missing the Ramona the Pest book.

Received a duplicate of one book and therefore one of the others was missing. Problem of quality control by manufacturer.

My set contained 2 copies of Ramona the Brave and did not include Beezus and Ramona

As a mosaic hobbyist I have purchased a number of books on mosaicing and find this to be one of the best. The instructions are clear and the techniques suggested quite professional. Many books use funky unprofessional techniques and materials--this one does not. I love the designs and while I would probably never copy them exactly I will use some of them as jumping off points for my own projects.

I love that this book describes all of the material needed and shows photos of all the steps. I can't wait to start a project. I have been wanting to add some unique stepping stones to my garden for awhile now.

I like the different designs. It inspired me to create more outdoor mosaic projects. I also liked the size of the book.
