This nicely illustrated and easy to read guide is comprehensive, though you will need to be willing to expand your vocabulary considerably. I wish it had a glossary!I bought both the paper and the Kindle editions to see if reading would be better with one than the other. It's definitely better to have the paper edition because it allows you to quickly page back and forth to see illustrations (all are black and white) while reading the text. The illustrations are larger with the paper edition, as well, and the book is lightweight so not difficult to carry with you on the commuter train. Last but not least, you can pass your paper edition on to another reader, impossible with the Kindle edition unless you want to loan your Kindle to someone for a while. I've learned from my comparison that for books with many illustrations, the hard copy is the way to go.

I devoured this book within a few days--loved it. I think it gives a good introduction with details on the the topics of molecular and cellular biology. However, if you don't have a background in chemistry (specifically, molecular diagrams) , you might want to search YouTube and Google for online tutorials. The book does try to provide some understanding on that subject, but it left be a little bewildered. Fortunately for me, I found an excellent video on YouTube that covered chemical structures. I offer the URL below:[...]Overall, I think this book is an excellent resource for those who haven't studied biology since high school, which is my situation. I highly recommend this book for the novice.

I found this book to be an excellent overview on how cells function and how genetics work. Most major aspects of cells are covered from what each organelle does and how certain processes cells perform work. These include things such as cell respiration, photosynthesis, and mitosis.The other important aspect covered in this book is DNA and genetics. The explanation of what purpose DNA has and how gene traits work is very good and easily understandable.Although this book is intended for mostly anyone from a student of biology to the reader with a casual interest in science, I found the section on cell respiration, with its multi-step processes, to be rather confusing. However, that is my only real complaint about the book.In conclusion, I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in biology, cells, or genetics.

Really a great way to learn Molecular Biology. The writing style is excellent with enough humor to make the information fun to read. I found this book to be a replacement for a number of introductory books on this subject since it covers the subject in a thorough and informative way, better than most others. Would recommend it highly to those interested in the subject.

I am a pre-pharmacy student. I've downloaded this book as well as the basic Biology for Dummies, and Biochemistry for Dummies. I find for my General College Bio class, I read this book the most and get the best info from it. As supplementary reading to my text book, I find this explains topics for more understanding and its not a dry as my textbook can be.I think all the Dummies books are great for extra reading, and I am sure I'll be buying more for Chemistry and other classes as well.

I picked up this book simply because I wanted a general "primer" on the subject of Molecular and Cell Biology prior to digging into other materials. It has served that purpose well. I feel as though I have a general grasp of many new concepts. I must admit that I did find it necessary to re-read many chapters to truly grasp the material sufficiently. Occasionally new vocabulary and terms were used in a chapter but not explained until one or two chapters later. Also, not all referenced images were helpful. Overall though, a great 'starter' book.

I bought this book to help me study for a test so that I could get into LPN school. I had to either take a biology class or challenge out of it by passing a test before I could even start nursing school. I chose to try to challenge out of the class so that I could start nursing school earlier. There is no way I would have passed the test without this book! I have been out of school for over 15 years and had to learn biology all over again. With the help of this book and a lot of prayer I passed the test and get to go straight into nursing classes this fall! I plan to buy more of these "Dummies" books to help me with my nursing classes!

This book is an excellent introduction to the subject of molecular and cell biology. Like all "for Dummies" books, it is written for the person who has little or no background in the subject, and is slightly whimsical and presented in language I could understand. I recently read a couple of other books that talked about how genes play an important part in driving our behavior and I wanted to check it out. I wanted to understand just what DNA is and why it is important and how it fits together with molecules, cells, genes and chromosomes. This book did the job.

John Gregory Dunne wrote six novels—Vegas; True Confessions; Dutch Shea, Jr.; The Red White and Blue; Playland; and Nothing Lost—and seven works of nonfiction, among which are the memoir-like Harp and two books that look at Hollywood, The Studio and Monster. Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1932, he graduated from Princeton in 1954. He collaborated with his wife, the writer Joan Didion, on many screenplays, including Panic in Needle Park and True Confessions. John Gregory Dunne died in December 2003.

One of the best ever depictions of a movie studio in action. The author was given full access to what went on at Twentieth Century Fox, and uses his literary skills to fine advantage to give a full view of the successes and (especially) the failures of those in charge. Written with great insight and humor.

Best book ever written about the workings of a studio. Mid sixties and covers Planet of the Apes, Doctor Dolittle and some great TV from Irwin Allen. I doubt anyone will be given access like this again.

An nteresting story full of detail and name-dropping, very similar to the style of brother Dominick, which I also like.

Excellent look at the studio system in the late 1960s as told by author John Gregory Dunne, a master writer.

Although a little dated (originally written circa 1969) this is still one of the great inside stories about what goes on (or more precisely did go on) in the old Hollywood. Written about the time that the old studio system finally collapsed, it collects some great anecdotes for film buffs. Besides, it is well written.

I'd heard so much about this classic book that I was disappointed reading it. So much more dirt has been exposed about the films and studio he discusses that the book now sounds complimentary to the studio and the film Dr. Doolittle that was destroying it. The actual shooting of Dr. Doolittle was much worse than is described, Rex Harrison was a terrible, arrogant, racist drunk, and everyone involved in Dunne's narrative were so much more cruel and dumb that the book, 35 years after it was first published ,seems benign.

I loved the Doctor Dolittle books when I was a child, but I had no desire to see the Hollywood musical based on it when it came out in 1967. Although I'd loved movie musicals like Annie Get Your Gun and Singin' in the Rain even before I'd started reading Doctor Dolittle, books, I knew any I saw in 1967 would be, somehow, lifeless.Why did the Hollywood musical more or less die out as an art form after 1960? That question is one of the things The Studio touches on, although it doesn't focus on it. It's more about the business end of Hollywood, and its concentration on the Doctor Dolittle musical seems fortuitous-- it's just what happened to be on the table when Dunne got the ok to write the book. But I wish it could have been more about the artistic reasons for the Doctor Dolittle musical's failure, because that's more important than its business failure.It would be an oversimplified cliche to say that the Hollywood musical failed as art because it became more of a business, but there may be some truth in it. Dunne's book certainly doesn't unearth much artistic motivation, although he doesn't seem to be looking for it. It's a good, deadpan satire of Hollywood businessmen, but it could have been more. Not that the businessmen were all that bad. Dunne seems to have rather liked most of them, and, compared to today's industry, there was a kind of innocent generosity in their willingness to spend 18 million dollars on a movie about a man who loved animals so much he learned to talk with them. When an animal appears in a movie today, chances are that the plot calls for people to kill it in some nasty way, or vice versa.

This Book Is Awesome I'm learning everything I need to know from the mathematical point of view. This is a great read OMG especially if you've been out of school for a while.

Please note that this edition is almost the same as the original edition from 1991, so no need to replace an old edition. There is a lot of basic qualntitative information here in a few pages and everything is very well explained, as one would expect from an Economist publication. Don't hesitate!

I was a student of Professor Hacking at University of Toronto in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He is brilliant and a Canadian all Canadians should be proud of. The fact I got to enjoy his thinking firsthand while he was formulating his ideas that became this book while I was an undergrad and then a graduate student in one of his departments will always be my good intellectual fortune. "Rewriting" is a landmark work on the reformation of ideas about memory in the nineteenth century and the consequences of this reformation on science and indeed on western culture in general. This book as well as his earlier The Taming of Chance are two of the best works in the history of science written in the late twentieth century. Both are highly recommended.

As a person diagnosed as DID, I was left with a lot of questions. My psychiatrist gave me a lot of reading to do but I found this one on my own. I haven't finished this book yet but so far it has been an immense help. I highly recommend it.

I normally like to read books like this. Some parts are interesting, but I lost interest. It's ok. 3 stars maybe I will pick it up again...by the way, this book is about multiple personality disorder. Syble, is far more interesting and based on a true story.

Truly an amazing piece of writing, scholarship, thought, etc. -- Hacking attempts to understand the modern fascination with memory and the unified, integral self through a careful study of the evolution of psychiatric thought on multiple-personality disorder. What he uncovers is important in cascading fashion for: multiple personality, psychiatry, history of science, discourse on memory, conceptions of historical time, even ontology. Hacking's underlying interest is twofold: one, what he calls 'looping' in the production of human types--here, a shorthand for the recursive reproduction of clinical disorders in patients. Essentially, this means that you go to see a doctor who assesses your symptoms and provides you with a diagnosis, a new description of your symptoms and an account of their cause. This re-description shapes the way you behave in the future, and both you and the doctor become more convinced that the cause is real (and accurately described) and that it can happen to others. As a result, 'types' are produced and therapists proliferate who specialize in treating these types.The second of his major interests, already suggested above, is the question of the temporality of scientific facts. This has been a concern for Bruno Latour as well, as in his famous essay on Ramses II. Hacking is interested here in the effects of belated re-descriptions of the past (hence the reference in the title to re-writing). The gist is that there is a strange kind of time that occurs when a present offers new descriptions of the past--we do not see these as present interventions that actively re-write a past, but rather as the revealing (or unveiling) of the truth that was always-already there. Here's Hacking from p. 94: "The events as described, which the multiple in therapy comes to feel as the cause of her illness, did not produce her present state. Instead, redescriptions of the past are caused by the present. Nevertheless, the patient feels that evens as newly described DO produce her present state. She feels that way because of the kinds of knowledge about memory that are current."

Strengths: A powerful treatment of the socio-philosophico-psychological development of an emergent psychiatric phenomenon ("category"), that of multiple personality disorder. Hacking navigates between "social construction" pure-and-simple, false memory syndrome, the analogy between remembering and story telling, and the invariant features of the conceptual framework needed for science. He is deeply empathic (the word "empathy" does not occur) towards the suffering of those who have experienced multiple personality disassociation. He is less so towards those who have tried to profit from it on talk shows and in the popular press. To read this text is to enjoy the dynamic give-and-take of a master at work. If there is a fan club, sign me up - I am unabashedly enthusiastic about this work.Weaknesses: I cannot find any real weaknesses, certainly none that can be explained concisely and without elaborate give-and-take. A call for amplification might include saying more about Forgiveness; but would perhaps require another book. At the risk of sounding flip, the German word for memory/recollection is misspelled on the bottom of page 202 and should be "Erinnerung." At another level, this may be a difficult book for many less sophisticated readers. That does not mean that they should not buy it and read it. They should. Just be prepared. I actually assigned it to a class in the psychology of cognitive and affective bases of behavior; and after some initial hesitation - and some guidance - they thought it was pretty cool. Doesn't get any better than that. Hacking brings an awesome learning and intellect to the task at hand, the difficulties of which are not to be underestimated. Newton is supposed to have said, If I have seen further than others, it is because I stood on the shoulders of giants who came before me. Not to lay it on too thick - but if not now when? - in this case, Newton's saying actually applies. Well done.

Ian Hacking is a brilliant thinker and an elegant writer. I read this book after one of my husband's friends suggested it. He said it was the best book he can ever remember reading (like me, he prefers to read good nonfiction).After reading the book (during which I couldn't help marking particularly good passages because I knew I'd want to reread them), I have found myself refering to this book frequently in my own writing (I'm an academic) and conversation with my students. I must agree with my husband's friend: this is certainly one of the best books I've read.If you enjoy smart analysis of contemporary culture and the frailties of sciences claiming to map the human mind, you will really enjoy this book. If you are a deep believer in the pure and virtuous authority of psychology, you will feel disturbed.

I love these fold-out guides. I've bought them for other states in which I lived too. They are always informative, easy to read, and have just about the right content. I admit...I would have liked just a few more graphics, but it is still great. (Opsrey in flight would have helped.) I'm not a sophisticated bird watcher, but when I go out in my neighborhood with these guides, I can postiively identify birds. It is so much fun!

Even though I am an avid birder and have many standard guide books I also own over a dozen of the foldable guides in this series. I use them as "flash cards" before a trip in order to become familiar with the common birds in a particular area so I can spot the unusual ones quicker. I also give them to my non-birding companions so I can share the joy of identifying wild birds. It is not as intimidating to them as a Sibley's or a Peterson's guide book. I should mention that the guide has less than half of the birds that can spotted in the region but it does cover the most popular species. However, it is great for a primer or for beginners and children.

Nice gift for my elderly father who enjoys looking at the birds that gather at his bird feeder. It is easier to use than a book and seems to cover all the birds in his area. I recommend.

Got it for friends who hike/camp. They really liked having something sturdy and easy to carry along on their journeys.

This has been a great addition to our homeschool nature studies! We keep it near the backdoor, outside of which is located several bird feeders. Perfect size/length for kids--not too overwhelmingly long, but with great pics of many common VA birds. My 5yo son loves it! **We also love other guides in this same series, and many are eligible for the 4-for-3 promotion. Also love that they're laminated; they seem very durable and have already withstood some abuse from our resident 1yo.

Great summary of likely birds in our area in a compact folder -- makes it easy to identify the birds at our feeders.

Great book! Excellent quality!

Thought the book was thorough covering his personal connections with his family, but unfortunately a bit light on his peers and the technical challenges and how he worked his way through them. Nevertheless, he is an inspiration to all us through his application to task and his work ethic.

well written, excellent photography and a very compelling story of one of the Genius of our time. What a shame he had to leave so early. I highly recommend the book !

This book has useful information and great pictures of John Britten's dream bike. It was ahead of its time and I see no reason why any of the large bike companies can't build it under licence. It is still a very advanced motorcycle, even today.
