Another example of excellence from "The New Cambridge Shakespeare (NCS)". NOTE, however, that this volume presents exclusively what is usually lumped as "The narrative poems" - i.e., it does NOT include the full set of sonnets ( which appear in a separately edited volume of the NCS series). As a value to the student/customer, therefore is this tradeoff: NCS covers here a smaller portion of the Shakespeare canon than the alternative from Oxford (ed. by Colin Burron, 2002, ISBN 019281933X ), but NCS can therefore offer larger typeface; larger and better quality paper.In this NCS edition, editor Roe provides helpful background material on each of the poems [Venus, Lucrece, Phoenix & Turtle, Lover's Complaint, and Passionate Pilgrim (*partially* attributable to Shakspeare) ]. The length and depth of discussion of each poem's introduction is not as great as one usually finds for an edition of, say, The Sonnets; but these poems have not stirred so much controversy or confusion either among the reading public or in academic analysis. The poems are (at least on the surface) much more readable and "accessible" to the general reader than are the sonnets. Roe's thorough annotations on each page of text clarify unusual or ambiguous words; they also raise intriguing issues about Shakespeare's art and agenda in suggestive writing with multiple levels of meaning.Both this NCS edition by Roe and the Burrow Oxford edition were released too early to benefit from fascinating new insights into the ever-puzzling bantam of this flock: The Phoenix and the Turtle. For the compelling evidence that this long-locked enigma of the canon is an eulogy to two Elizabethan Catholic martyrs, the reader will need to turn to a Times Literary Supplement issue from April of this year.For most of the controversies surrounding these poems, I'll risk claiming that there have been few critical revelations between the publication of this excellent 1993 NCS edition and now; so (excepting the 2003 TLS article mentioned above) it remains satisfyingly current. For reading pleasure and thoughtful study of these masterpieces, I think you'll be most pleased to own this Cambridge edtion.

"Venus and Adonis" is Shakespeare's first published work, 199 stanzas of sesta rima (a quatran with a couplet) with an ababcc rhyme scheme. Venus chases and detains Adonis to woo him but does not win his love. In fact, Adonis actually rejects her love. He goes off to hunt and is soon killed by a boar. The poem has eloquent set speeches and beautiful landscapes. "The Rape of Lucrece" is Shakespeare's epic poem in rhyme royal of the story of the rape of a Roman lady which led to the overthrow of Tarquin rule in Rome and the establishment of the Republic. "The Phoenix and the Turtle" is a short (67 lines) allegorical elegy. "The Passionate Pilgrim" is a collection of twenty poems, only five of which are clearly by Shakespeare (although a few others may be as well). Number XI is possibly by Bartholemew Griffin. Numbers VIII and XX are by Richard Barnefield (and possibly No. XIX). The well-known No. XIX is probably by Christopher Marlow. The last stanza to XIX is by Sir Walter Raleigh. "Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Music" is the title to the second part of "The Passionate Pilgrim." And, "A Lover's Complaint" is a poem in rhyme-royal (ababbcc) about a maiden who complains of her seduction by an unworthy young man.

I've always loved the Bard's plays. Something moved me to pick up this copy of his early poems. Man! Really gets you thinking about the themes of love, jealousy, honor that surface throughout the plays! I recommend the introductory material, too -- gives lots of insights into how to ponder Will's motives in publishing early under his own name. But beware: it raises more questions than it answers.

Shakespeare is at his best in this poem. At his best as for the subject : a raped virtuous wife who cannot go over the stain and cannot even utter the name of the rapist because she does not see his crime first, hence her vengeance second, but she only sees her crime first, hence her punishment second, and she commits suicide in front of everyone. At his best in the contradictions he brings in the treatment of his subject : Lucrece is not able to understand that rape is a crime on the side of the rapist, and not a fault on the side of the victim, but, and there Shakespeare is great, Roman society, and probably English society too, at the time but also today, will not accept her explanation if she does not consider herself as absolutely guilty of the crime she was the victim of. A woman is never accepted as clean and white if she is raped, she keeps some guilt in the eye of society, be it only to have « incited » or « caused » the rape by her being enticing, beautiful and desirable. In this society, the Roman society, but also ours, the woman is always, somewhere, even if she goes to court and gets the rapist in jail, the cause of the crime, hence the one responsible, at least partly, for the crime. Shakespeare does a pretty good job at showing this unescapable dilemma for a woman. And this appears clearly in the treatment of Tarquin's banishment in exactly one concluding line. What is banishment when compared to death in mental torture ? But Shakespeare is also at his best in his poetry, in his poetical style, in his brilliant use of the language to enchant us with music, the music of words, sounds, meanings, and all other musics you can imagine and find in this poem. I will suggest everyone to study in fine details the section going from line 925 to line 1035, what I call the « time » soliloquy. It is absolutely marvellous and brilliant, and what's more, it is extremely modern, even if it is fully Renaissance. On this subject, time, the Renaissance was particularly prolix, even verbose, but Shakespeare rises over time into some eternity by the way he composes the rhythm and the harmony of this brilliant piece. It becomes timeless and should be studied by all people to finally understand that time is cruel but that life is even more cruel if we do not accept to go along and away when necessary with time. Time becomes a friend in a way, and not an enemy because it knows how to liberate you from life, suffering and useless aging when aging does not bring anything any more except torture and humiliating degrading and ever increasing inferiority, declining and vacuity.Dr Jacques CIOULARDEAU

Was very helpful in getting my STNA. I needed to watch some of the demonstrations over and over since I felt in class we just didn't get the time to practice the skills, and I did pass the state test in Ohio just fine. I'd sure use it for review if I had to. I've ended up caring for my own mother with a caregiver contract and have not had to find a job outside of this and will be retiring this next year. But I'm still glad I purchased this.

My nursing assistant students use this video throughout the class. Very professionally done. Unless they have corrected the error I have to let my students know that we do not tub bathe or shower a person in 115 degree water!

David Brady has written a startlingly candid account of his traumatic childhood, his tumultuous life and career, and subsequent redemption.Brady is a successful feature film and television writer, as well as a producer and director. He has garnered many awards and accolades over the years, and has also taught at three Canadian Universities. He talks about what he thinks must have been the lowest point in his life - when he owed millions of dollars to creditors, and hundreds of lawsuits were filed against him when promised funding for a film didn't materialize. He found a way to reconcile with his creditors, and is still paying off some debts to this day, but he has regained his integrity and good reputation.The book feels like a casual chat, and you feel as if Brady is across the table speaking directly to you. I couldn't put the book down. From frightening episodes with his alcoholic father, his feelings of insecurity, his own alcohol and substance abuse problems, to interesting insights into the early music scene in Toronto and L.A., and depictions of the Sunset Strip in the late 1960's - I found this to be an enlightening book.The book will be an interesting read even if you have not experienced childhood trauma, as it is also a guide for living a spiritually fulfilled life. He has outlined eight steps: I Surrender, I Believe, I Am Ready to be Changed, I Decide to be Changed, I Forgive, I Ask, I Give Thanks, I Dedicate My Life. These are his rules and philosophies which have come from training, counselling and courses he has taken. They are good universal truths and helpful points. He also mentions the importance of visualizing your goals, and the idea that there is a "Cosmic Consciousness" which we can tap into. Brady found his way, but the larger message is to find your own philosophy, your own way to happiness, stability and balance.

After reading all three books of DBs trilogy series (Serenity, Success, Power) I have been able to put into perspective my own childhood with its quagmire of emotional baggage carried into my adult life. In fact, David Brady has clearly articulated the solution to childhood trauma and how best to deal with it in the here and now; how to approach the issues of sex, power and money; and to cultivate the right spiritual mindset in the second half of our lives. Whether you are dealing with personal crisis or trying to navigate in the world at large, David's books are well worth reading.

This read was a fascinating journey indeed! I learned so much, but from the inside, as though I was experiencing the places and events from within the author and the individuals who people her travels and the historical background she provides. The hours I spent on the “borders” were engaged, educational and emotional. I highly recommend this unusual book.

I loved it. Beautifully written, and conveyed all of the suffering this region has endured throughout the centuries because of political, religious and ideological differences. You feel for every character she meets.

Brilliant. Beautifully written. One of the best books I've read this year.Kassabova has a poet's eye for landscape, an instinct for finding exactly the right people, and the ability to fade into the background to let their stories shine through, all while shading her journey with her own stories and questions. It's a delicate balance.She introduces her readers to a fascinating but little-known part of Europe: that strange and often overrun corner where the borders of Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece meet, and where rusting barbed wire and abandoned guard towers are being slowly consumed by forests and mountains that slide into the Black Sea.But Kassabova doesn't just straddle these physical borders. Her story also straddles the borders of mystery and superstition, and the unexplainable events that can happen in a place as marginal as this.Highly recommended.

Very readable for the most part; incredibly sobering to a grreat extent. Made me very thankful to be living in the south Pacific. The author, now domiciled in Scotland, made a prolonged exploratiom of the terrain of her origins.. Gave me a good understanding of the basis of a common joke when I was a youth in the UK - viz acquaintance greets one with fake alarm - "Have you heard the news!? --There's trouble in the Balcans!" Yes, right. In the book Kapka meets and bonds with some very interesting, mostly rustic people of various nationalities,both real and forcibly modified, , and almost all living fractured lives under the boot heals of various military, In New Zealand we have a much over used word - resilience - used to extol our earthquake aurvival ability, but really we have nothing on the inhabitants of the border country of the book, who have survived generations of mass upheaval, invulluntary exile, and milittary domination by armies of several nations. So yes, a good book, but I got tired of the superntatural element which was, to me, well, tiresome.

Excellent book...I read it before going to Bulgaria.

Personal sharing of author's visit to this orders area with current views of locals and a great tying in of hilstory of the area. Crossing these borders depends on who was in power and how crazy that power was - and who got shot traveliing in which direction.

Somewhat interesting, but no one I know has completed the book.

One of the key points in the book was how generations of professional scouts and management types made mental misevaluations of players based on their height, weight, looks, and/or unorthodox attributes/skills. It's an excellent look into the information and management revolutions that swept through baseball that led to great teams for the cash-strapped A's, multiple titles for the Red Sox, and an incredible build in Tampa. A harsh reviewer wrote that the book was interesting, but that Lewis was writing about mental mistakes that humans (and experts) make on a regular basis -- and that these mistakes were written about by two Israeli psychologists named Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. Mr, Lewis is self-assured enough to admit that he had never heard of them before.He spent the next several years learning about them. In addition to their brilliant work, they also have (a) great back stories and (b) a fascinating relationship where despite being married with children, their brains were more attuned and in-sync with each other than anyone else. Mr. Lewis covers all of this in a book that is interesting and an extremely easy read.For a more in-depth look at Tversky and Kahneman's work, one must read Kahneman's "Thinking Fast and Slow," which was published in 2011. It doesn't read as well as Lewis, but the dive into prospect choice theory, hindsight bias and a host of other mental mistakes that these brilliant men identified and named is incredible.

I tend to get excited when the best story tellers write a new book, and when the book covers a topic I have been focused on recently this is even more so. Such was the case when Lewis covered the Nobel Prize winning duo of Daniel (Danny) Kahneman and Amos Tversky, two psychologists who developed much of the base work behind behavioral finance. I also see its roots in Robert Cialdini’s books (Influence, Pre-suasion). While Kahneman (Tversky died in 1996 so did not share in the Nobel) wrote Thinking Fast and Slow to share their life work, here Lewis tries to identify why they worked so well together. In fact I don’t recall him talking about thinking fast (immediate response) or slow (long-term investor) at all. It reads somewhere between biography and non-fiction about behavioral finance.Some of the more interesting thoughts in the book have nothing to do with behavioral finance, but have lots to do with psychology. Lewis discusses Daryl Morey, who I would call a basketball sabermatrician. He has been GM for the Houston Rockets since 2007 using tactics similar to those described for baseball in the book Moneyball (also by Lewis). In this same chapter Lewis provides a definition of a nerd – a person who knows his own mind well enough to mistrust it. This sounds like something Charlie Munger would say (high praise).Both Kahneman and Tversky lived in Israel, where everyone serves a stint in the military, and both saw action in the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973 (when they returned from America to take up arms). Kahneman helped the Israelis design better tools for selecting officers and training pilots. Tversky was a paratrooper. Both were professors at Hebrew University at the beginning of the first war.Our mind tricks us. After the fact, we know exactly why we saw the event coming that no one anticipated (see Taleb’s Black Swan) and surveys weigh more heavily toward events that have recently occurred. The reasons often given relate back to our days as prey on the plains of Africa (thinking fast keeps you alive in that context – you run away from a predator, as fast as you can). One of the ways to catch these inconsistencies is to devise three options, where a person chooses A over B, B over C, and C over A. This violates the law of transitivity, familiar to anyone who has ever studied algebra or logic. Lewis provides many of these examples, as did Kahneman in Thinking Fast and Slow, and I fall for nearly every one. Even after I’ve seen them before (sometimes, occasionally, I remember).K/T developed several heuristics, where laws of chance are replaced by rules of thumb. “We often decide that an outcome is extremely unlikely, or impossible, because we are unable to imagine any chain of events that could cause it to occur. The defect, often, is in our imagination.”• Representativeness – we see a previously developed mental model rather than thinking through the facts as presented (and are generally correct). This creates systematic errors, such as looking at a kid and immediately deciding whether they are athletic. Looking at the negative can help avoid these problems. For example, the WW2 bombs landing in London appeared to target certain areas, but really were random. If you have 23 randomly selected people in a room, the odds are better than half that at least two share a birthday.• Availability – we more easily recall memorable events.• Conditionality – we make contingent assumptions when none are stated. We assume normal operating conditions (e.g., normal distribution, VaR). “…people don’t know what they don’t know, but that they don’t bother to factor their ignorance into their judgments.”• Anchoring (and adjustment) – if you are shown a large (or small) number, for example, then your response is then large (or small).• Simulation – what could happen dominates what is likely to happen – this can lead to analysis paralysis (I find it difficult to overcome this when investing for my personal accounts – it’s hard to pull the trigger).• Recency bias – recent events influence our probability assumptions.• Hindsight bias - once we know how something turns out, our recollection is that we predicted it in advance (similar to Black Swans – Taleb)How do ideas form in our mind? Is it conscious, or indirect? When we study in school, or for a credential, the focus is on repeating the “right” answer. While hard to grade, I’ve always thought it would be better to provide an answer and ask the student to improve it.Who knew that a bad experience could be remembered more fondly if the final part of the event was not so distasteful – the peak-end rule? This was tested using colonoscopies that ended with the medical instruments brought out of the body slowly or quickly. Doing so slowly made it more likely that the person would return for future tests.The risk manager will discover, usually the hard way, that avoiding a risk receives no reward but if you miss a risk then you will get the blame. This is a human bias.Accounting does not consider the impact on the environment, to limited supply, or to emotions. Utility theory overstates the value. Risk aversion is a fee willingly paid to avoid regret. In any case we all prefer to avoid pain more than we want to secure gain. We react more to relative changes than absolute ones, and probability is not straightforward.The benefits of a group often conflict with the benefit to an individual. Antibiotics are such an example. In total, limiting antibiotics is better because viruses have less chance to mutate successfully. For an individual, antibiotics are either useful or neutral. There is no downside to an individual to being treated with antibiotics.One of the fascinating revelations in the book (for me, at least) was the need to invert. “How do you understand memory? You don’t study memory. You study forgetting.” As we study other topics we should look for opportunities to utilize this strategy.While much of the interest in this branch of psychology is applied to investment strategies, K/T worried more about geopolitical biases and the series of avoidable mistakes that could be made by political leaders relying on gut feel. They thought that intelligence reports written as essays should be replaced by probabilities. Telling a story is not helpful in this context, but politicians tend to be afraid of numbers. We have seen evidence of this recently as briefings to the US president are said to be focused on charts and short sound bites.As you read about financial economics, this should not be your first book. I believe it is more useful to someone already familiar with the concepts from other sources. For someone starting out on this topic I personally like Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them by Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich to start and then Thinking Fast and Slow by Kahneman before reading the Lewis book.

With no doubt, I had great fun reading “The Undoing Project.”I was introduced to the work of Tversky and Kahneman as a college sophomore in 1988 by my teacher, hydrologist Joseph Harrington, who was a great admirer of their ideas. The beauty of what is now called “Prospect Theory” has inevitably stuck with me since. It is only in retrospect that I have come to understand it was radical for its time.So I swallowed whole “Thinking About Thinking” within a week of having read the Michael Lewis review on Bloomberg. And I’ve since really enjoyed the recent near-autobiography of Richard Thaler’s, as well as many of Dan Ariely’s books.Well, you don’t have to believe me on this, but Michael Lewis actually explains the concepts better!No joke, he really does.And he provides an unbelievably deep, personal and sensitive account of the explosive relationship between the two giants. A very believable account too. The research done by Michael Lewis really shows. He’s had phenomenal access too, it seems.And yet, the book does not hang together terribly well. Chapters 1 and 8 should not have made it into the book, they ought to have been relegated to the pages of Vanity Fair, where the author regularly provides fantastic material.More to the point, what we have here is a bunch of chapters that, chronological order notwithstanding, do not constitute a book. The incredible material, the wonderful expositions, the deep insights are all present and correct, but they fail to meld into a narrative. Even the title of the book, much as it has its roots in the work of Tversky and Kahneman, does not do justice to their contribution.It really pains me to say this, especially because the author’s previous effort, “Flash Boys,” was a genuine five-star book. Perhaps that’s the problem. Maybe if I was reading this straight off of “Boomerang” I’d have found it great. As it stands, I’m not sure I could recommend it to the general public.If, on the other hand, you have the remotest interest in Behavioral Economics, you genuinely can’t not read “The Undoing Project” and you are guaranteed to enjoy it.
