Unless you are seeking a historical perspective back to rev 3 I would suggest you skip this one. As it was written for Qt3, circa 2002 it has very little that could be called current in today's world of 4.7 and beyond. At the time I wrote this 4.8 has been released, and Nokia (the current Qt owner) has chosen a different path for its own future. The Licensing model used then was different, and the concept of Microsoft dot.Net did not exist in the Windows world so cross-porting there was in fact simpler by today's environment. The book itself is well written, but time has passed it by.

Book starts out strong, and was helpful as an introduction for Qt. However, it seems to cut out about 350 pages in, putting subjects such as "Focus Handling" in its own 3 page chapter, rather than integrating it into an existing chapter. That said, the Portability chapter, which includes a list of Qt functions that are not portable, was a valuable addition.Keep in mind, the 2nd edition of Programming for Qt was written for Qt 3. At the time of this review, the latest version of Qt is version 4. This is a problem because Trolltech appears to reinvent the wheel for each major version. While the author had me salivating at the thought of a QStyleSheet, checking the API docs for Qt 4 QStyleSheet is now a deprecated class, and as far as I can tell there is no current equivalent.One aspect I wish the author had covered in more detail is the actual compiling and linking of applications that use Qt. I'm starting to get the impression that Trolltech's dirty little secret is that while their API is both clean and thorough, the signal/slot method is overly reliant on #defines, and the developer has to compile and link as many as twice the number of files to make it function. Trolltech includes a program 'qmake' almost as a bandaid which will generate Makefiles that will then automatically generate and compile the extra 'moc' files. The problem is that if you're porting an application to Qt, you're likely to have existing makefiles. Adding the additional layer of qmake and it's .pro files is both cumbersome and not actually necessary. While you can certainly figure out on your own how to avoid using qmake, it would have been helpful if the book described the functionality of the qmake-generated makefiles. This would help developers porting to Qt to include that functionality in their existing makefiles.

I found this book to be clearly written, and not difficult to follow and succinct, and not sufficient to answer enough of my programming questions to feel comfortable creating my own programs. You definitely need to study the Troll Tech-provided documentation to go very far beyond the book in programming, but the documentation reads like it was written as a reference, for people who understand but simply need a reminder. The book needs about two hundred more pages explaining examples and critical subjects like slot-signal interactions, layouts and many of the widgets more completely.This book makes a good overview, but needs more depth. At the time, it was about the only book available, so I cannot say that it was a mistake to get the book when I did. I hope that other books coming out on Qt have more depth and more complete explanations.

This book is old but I found it useful to understanding QT. If you are interested in designing and writing computer software I highly recommend Qt and KDE!

This book gives you a relatively quick and easy introduction to using Qt. You should know the fundamentals of C++ programming to benefit from the book. However, if you seriously want to get into using Qt are several much more up to date titles that also comes with a more modern and appetizing style. I bought this item because I have been using Qt for some time (Qt really rocks!) and went in to get all the books without critically reviewing before buying.

Very well laid out. Easy to follow. Seems to follow QT 3 so the examples have to be converted to QT 4 if you are using the latest release.

I learned as much about Perl as I did about data structures and algorithms.There are great examples of creating and accessing nested data structures, references, etc. as well as the map and sort that makes them really stand out. By the time you are half way through the book you'll be an expert in slicing and dicing any hierarchy of arrays, hashes, and references. Other books cover these topics, but using them with data structures and algorithms makes them really stick. I may never write a sort algorithm, but my code is much tidier now.

It's another one of those useful blue O'Reilly books with an animal on the front. A wolf, in this case. This one starts with basic data structures in Perl and then presents reusable algorithms of increasing complexity. The authors intend it for two types of readers: "...those who want to cut and paste solutions and those who want to hone their programming skills." Attempting to serve both audiences, the authors attempt to be both practical and theoretical.The book begins with basic and advanced data structures. The next series of chapters each address basic programming tasks such as sorting, searching, and working with sets, matrices, graphs, and strings. The final set of chapters is organized by topic area, covering geometric algorithms, number systems, number theory, cryptography, probability, statistics, and numerical analysis. A concluding appendix suggests additional readings.The format and quality are familiar to readers of other O'Reilly books. It is a good, readable exploration of algorithms implemented in Perl. You will need to get the latest version of Perl on your own. No problems with that, either.

Mastering Algorithms with Perl is an intermediate to advanced text describing traditional algorithms and data structures through Perl. It assumes a basic understanding of Perl. And while the average reader will be able to progress through the better part of the book with no background in computer science, the last third of the book requires at least a passing familiarity with Calculus, advanced mathematical notation, and covers topics from the vantage those already initiated to Probability, Statistics, Cryptology, and Number Theory.That said, the book has something for everyone. Beginner and Intermediate level Perl programmers will find the book's materials information dense but approachable. Advanced programmers will find a well written refresher illustrating familiar concepts in Perl. Given the breadth of the book and the language specific insights, even experience Perl programmers should expect to learn a thing or two.Topics covered include: linked lists, circular linked lists, garbage collection, doubly-linked lists, infinite lists, binary trees, heaps, binary heaps, janus heaps, sorting, searching, sets, matrices, graphs, strings, geometric algorithms, number systems, number theory, cryptography, probability, statistics, and numerical analysis.I've found that while the book is somewhat daunting, it goes down best a little bit at a time: read a chapter, then work through the examples. The first time I attempted to read the book I got about a third of the way through before stopping, scanning the rest, and putting it back on the shelf. A couple months later as I was working on a problem involving graphs and trees, the book came back down. And as interesting and complicated problems present themselves, I often find myself reaching for it.It covers an awful lot in 701 tightly packed pages. Have you ever wondered how regular expressions work? Hashes? Insights into their internal workings are in there. It is an excellent reference and fills a much needed gap. No other Perl book comes close to the breadth and depth coverage of these materials. That said, early printings of the first edition had a tremendous number of errors and typos. If you buy it used, I would highly recommend visiting the O'Reilly site to read the errata. ...

As expected a broad overview of several areas with a few gems. I found particular value in the chapters on matrices, stats, and numerical methods.

If you have to learn Perl in your production life for any reason, I think this book would be one of the best option that you can have. At least, you can enrich your knowledge of algorithms, and that is worth to pay for.

DAR is one of my top 5 RPG settings, and the book is an absolutely indespensible resource for gamemasters who don't have a lot of time to design adventures. The adventure generator in the book is worth the price of admission all by itself, and works for any setting.And the setting? Man, is it fun. It's like Conan the Barbarian meets Band of Brothers; The Untouchables meets James Bond after the apocalypse. So many excellent ideas packed into this compact little work of design mastery. Buy it!

I had high hopes for this setting, as Hite's works are usually grand. Unfortunately, I didn't find Day After Ragnarok as exciting as it sounded from other reviews, and people talking about the book. It is passable, and well written, but it just doesn't have a spark to it that says "play me, right now!" Which I feel all pulp settings should have. It could have used a longer work to truly go into some of the details that are sadly glossed over, and built a few more "strange" ideas than the singular one of the dead Jormundgyr serpent--throwing in more Norse Myth, perhaps some pulp/Nordic magic, or the like.

This is the dark alternate future of Spirit of the Century. The Nazis summoned the Midgard Serpent and it crushed everything beneath it and flooded all the coastal areas with tidal waves. The world is being poisoned by the corpse's venom and blood and soon the world will die. But there are heroes trying to save what is left and maybe - maybe - turn the tide.

LOVE everyththing about this setting! My only issue is the small typesetting in some of it as well as the lack of a plot point. Honestly, after reading this book the ideas just flow into your head. There is a bit of political ideas in it but I think you can use as much or as little as you'd like. There is enough background to do a lot with but there is also a lot of room to come up with your own. Reading the book does not feel like reading just another game book. The material is delivered in a way that you are sucked into the world. I have yet to start running it but I am currently between two ideas. One idea being a mission based campaign where the players are scouting, rescuing, and rebuilding the US. The other is more of a survival horror where our heroes come from the ruined east coast of the US and are looking for sanctuary. I would like to combine the ideas in this setting with some of our own folklore.

There isn't praise enough for this two fisted occult adventure guide book. Buy it ASAP! Kenneth Hite is at top form here doing what he does best, creating a wild alternate history for an earth gone mad.

Well get ready to take up your sword and sidearm, The Day After Ragnarok is on the shelves and daring you to play.Written by Kenneth Hite, who describes the game as, "'Conan the Barbarian: 1948' meets `Quatermass and the Giant Snake'", Ragnarok is an alternate history game set in a world of swords, sorcery, super science and pulp adventure. This is one of the coolest sword & sanity (see link on my profile for more on this genre) settings I have ever read.Imagine if the Nazis wanted to summon forth the Midgard Serpent, and unleash it upon the world. Now imagine it worked, ushering forth the day of Ragnarok. Jörmungandr is released upon the face of the earth, along with global chaos and mass destruction. As a last ditch effort the Allies initiate "Operation John Henry" and a lone B-29 named Strange Cargo armed with atomic explosives is sent on a suicide mission to slay the beast. The plane reaches its target, and miraculously manages to kill the Serpent with a megaton atomic blast to the head. But this was not a victory. The earth was changed... spoiled. Atomically radiated venomous blood rained down, and the body of the Midgard Serpent fell, causing tidal waves and earth quakes. Its carcass lay dead stretching from Scotland to Sicily. Madness ensues, and adventure begins...The setting offers many challenges, including: giants, hydra, serpent cults, mutated animals and insects that have grown to monstrous proportions (giant snakes abound), and don't forget the other survivors of the apocalypse. Characters can range from arcane scholar to barbarian, secret agent to outlaw, and many other possibilities. Sounds fun, huh?The Day After Ragnarok is a Savage Worlds setting (HERO Edition coming soon) published by Atomic Overmind Press. Even if you do not use Savage Worlds as the game system I feel the setting presented it strong enough to purchase this book anyway. Use the setting and power it with whatever game system you like.

I lead a craft class at a youth camp this summer. We did two tie-dye projects, a pillowcase and a t-shirt. I took this book, to show the kids all the different ways they could try it. They loved it, and tried many of them. All the projects came out great, and the kids said they wanted me to come back next year and do a whole week of just tie-dye. It was a hit!!(Camper's ages were 3rd to 6th grade.)

I haven't tried making anything from the book but I read through it and the techniques were spelled out very well. The pictures in the book were great and I would say inspiring. I can't wait to give it a try. I made a tie-dye shirt many many years ago and I wore it out. I loved it but it didn't hold a candle to the lovely shirts in the book. I wish I had this book way back then. I am so glad I got it, it's not a big book but a good price for all the information and pictures it has. In my opinion, this is a great buy.

I bought what was supposed to be an informative, original ideas how to book, which it was. Except all the material, and more, is available for free, with on line videos, from dharma.com. To the authors credit they mention dharma.com as a supplier for dyes and shirts. They just don't mention the dozens of free videos also freely available, with better instructions. The China printed book is at most a garage sale item at a quarter or fifty cents. If there was one or two popular projects that were "secret" the cost would be worth it, but not only was it lacking that, which projects it did list were rehashed from the sixties.

The steps are easy to follow, illustrations are all in color with a good variety of designs. I only wish there were even more designs if that was even possible!!

I purchase this for my daughter in law, who loves to tie dye. She has already made one of the shirts from the book (the watermelon), and she has her eyes on several others. This was an Easter gift, and she was so excited to receive it. I was very please with this purchase!!

If you've never, ever done tie dye before, you'll probably find this useful, otherwise, don't expect to learn any earthshattering tricks or tips from this one.I learned the vast majority of what this book contains from asking a few questions of the craft staff at the YMCA of the Rockies.Looks like I'll have to invest in the comprehensive video series on the same subject. I received an Advance Reading Copy of The First Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer and John Mensch from the publisher (Flatiron Books) in exchange for an honest review. The First Conspiracy is scheduled for release on January 8, 2019.The First Conspiracy is not a novel, it is a glimpse into a piece of history. We are dropped into the months leading up to the Declaration of Independence and the war that it launches. The focus of this history is a group of men who are secretly associated with the British. This group of men has a plan. They are out to get George Washington.This story is told in third person, which makes sense for a history. The story jumps around in both place and time, following different people and their actions. Given that we are piecing together a conspiracy, the jumping made sense. What made less sense to me was the tense Meltzer chose to write in. This history is written in present tense. I think his goal was to make us feel a sense of urgency, make us feel tension and anxiety over how things were going to turn out. This did not work for me. Since this is a history, I knew from the beginning that the attempt to assassinate Washington was going to be unsuccessful. The choice of present tense just felt awkward.The down side to the jumping in time and space was that we never get a chance to really attach to any of the characters. While we see what individuals are doing, we don’t get close to any of them. This made it difficult for me to sink into the story. I felt very distant from the action and the people involved.I also struggled with the writing style Meltzer used. Meltzer is a bestselling author, who typically writes thrillers. I could see this in his approach to this history. His chapter lead ins and endings had the feel of what I see in thrillers. Again, this felt out of place to me. It felt as if he were trying to force a sense of excitement into the story, rather than mining and developing the intrigue that was inherent to this conspiracy tale.While this was an interesting story about a piece of history that I honestly did not know about, I did not love this book. I wanted to be immersed in this conspiracy, immersed in the plotting and intrigue. Instead, I was overly aware of the author and his stylistic devices.

Now we can add questionable “history books”The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington is based on nothing more than rumor & conjecture. The author provides only a handful of source facts and turns it into 410 pages of speculation and repetitive prose.In the books “Author’s Notes” Brad Meltzer writes about reaching out to historian Joseph Ellis who tells him that this topic will “…always be elusive” & Meltzer states “He was right”. Then the question begs, why try to write a book?

One can be forgiven for speculating as to what might have happened to our thirteen colonies if George Washington had been murdered in the conspiracy detailed in this excellent work by Brad Meltzer. What might be even more salient, however, is what America did become because the great man was NOT murdered. Much of what America has become is owed to those who stopped the plot to assassinate the father of our country.Imagine yourself as a writer. Now, assume you have stumbled across some disjointed information that indicates an attempt to kidnap or murder the one key figure in America's quest for self-governance. What would you do?Brad Meltzer probably has a little more backbone than most of us. As for myself, I might have entertained the thought to try writing a novel on the topic. With novels, people are more forgiving than with nonfiction. But, honestly, I probably would have given up after fifty or so pages.So, I bought Meltzer's book, including the Audible Whispersync edition so I could listen to it when actually reading was not possible. How was it?Excellent. From the get-go I was fascinated by the prospect, if not so thrilled with some of the early statements.What I mean is that, early on, (for just one example), Meltzer states:'...This small, inexperienced, poorly equipped group of soldiers needs to stand up to what is probably the biggest and most powerful military force in the world. By any normal measure, they don’t stand a chance—and Washington knows this, just as he knows that with every decision he makes, thousands of young soldiers’ lives could be lost...'Meltzer, Brad. The First Conspiracy (pp. 1-2). Flatiron Books. Kindle Edition.So, why does this bug me? Perspective. Through eight years of conflict, the total number who were killed by the fighting was 8,000. Yes, that is thousands, but is far less than one might suppose. When Meltzer stresses thousand of young soldiers lives could be lost, I imagine, readers are likely to conjure up far larger numbers in their minds.Yes, I know I am being a bit picky. I am merely trying to show how this otherwise terrific history falls short of being a great story for us today.The writing and editing are good.BOTTOM LINEI highly recommend this book for anyone interested in American colonial history. Remember to get the Audible edition and listen to it with you kids and/or parents.Four stars out of five.

Just finished Brad Meltzer’s latest novel “The First Conspiracy”. Instead of reading as a novel like his earlier books, it is a disjointed repetitive history book. In an attempt to make the book authentic, he uses quotes and turns around and rewrites the essence of quote. He keeps repeating the nature of his characters. I truly enjoyed his earlier books and was looking forward to this book. I am very disappointed with it.

It is against this discursively produced Islam as anti-critique that Ahmad situates his thesis. Focusing on Islam, Religion as Critique's overarching argument is; this: “departing from standard Enlightenment understanding, according to which religions, especially non-Protestant ones, could only be objects of critique, this book…theorizes religion as an important agent of critique, viewing Moses, the Buddha, Christ, Muhammad…and many others as critic par excellence” (p.xii). Drawing on ethnographic as well as literary sources, Ahmad takes his proposition further to argue that indeed Islam as a mode of religious criticism is practiced by ordinary Muslims, women, and men in everyday life.This is a very well written and an intellectually stimulating book, which offers thought-provoking arguments that will keep its reader engaged from beginning to the end. It is an important contribution to the fields of Islamic studies, anthropology, and philosophy. Certainly, it is an essential reading for scholars and students concerned about the future of Islamic traditions in an increasingly secularized world, where Islam continues to be represented as an antithesis to all that which is modern, rational and democratic to justify its relegation to the private if not banishing it all together.

I have always enjoyed folklore from any country. The history of the male lead interwoven with his life in Russia and childhood fairytales was intriguing. I enjoyed this story of two broken people who took a chance on hope and helped each other mend the broken parts of their heart.

I loved the story line and had to keep reading regardless of what else I needed to accomplish. Not the usual "fluff."

I loved this book so much that when I finished the last page, I went back to the beginning and ready it all again. I know it's a fairy tale but such a lovely HEA!!! This is definitely a "feel good" Christmas book.

Can we be too quick to judge, give too much credence to a first impression? Can we be our own worst critic and not give others a chance to love us? This book is about two seemingly damaged individuals who learn how love, if given a chance, can heal and wipe away their self-doubts to allow themselves to have happiness.

This is the best book I’ve read in a long time-it has culture, romance, mystery, beautiful music-everythingI look for in a novel!

I loved this story, a Christmas romance with lots of character. Set in London showing the wonderful sights and also the harsher reality for some people living there. A book that is full of heart.

Interesting story and the twist in the story that you do not see coming. Life is different for all of us and as the stories that shape our lives. Some darker than others. Lauren Westwood did a very good job showing this.

This book was really enjoyable to read. I luv'ed the caractures. It has you was and then ☺ I don't usually read this type of book but it was a lovely find for me to enjoy I was so happy and felt so 👍
