What I enjoyed about this quick read was that it reminded me of my teenage years when we used to share unexplained and spooky stories for entertainment.There is no presentation of evidence or effort to prove anything. I didn't mind that. It's a summary of fascinating stories & a few notes on where you can find more info. I found myself making notes and highlighting things that fascinated me so I can research those ones more throughly & decide for myself if they are fact or fiction.If you want hard hitting evidence, this book is not for you. If you enjoy science fiction that has added excitement because it might just have some truth to it & you need to do a tonne more research, then enjoy!

A little Art Bell and George Norey persona. Could be true. I remember some of these stories on Art radio program. It's up to the reader to believe it or not.

I bought this for an intro soil science class. I didn't even open it for the class, but it did come in handy as a reference book when I tried to apply some soil science principles to real-world problems later. Over time, we tend to forget things. So it was very useful to keep this textbook so that I could go look up some basic soil science that I forgot over the summer. It's pretty well organized and easy to understand, as long as you got a B or better in a general chemistry class first.

Was required but not required for a class type deal. I didn't use it much which was nice since i just rented it! I would suggest just renting!

I will definitely be buying loose leaf from now on. You can carry it anywhere with you, with as little or many chapters as you like, reducing weight. The condition was new.

The detailed outlay of the book is very enlightening and thorough in its approach to deliver knowledge regarding many things, 'soil'. I have learned a treasure load of goodies from this book regarding the science of soil and other practical implications as well.

I bought this book ($109, new) for a class on soils and the environment. I will be honest, I did not read the whole book. I read a few chapters. I do know that my professor had issues with one or two of the chapters, (chapter 10?), dealing with microbes (so keep an eye out). That being said, its not a hardcover book, and is worded so that you can read it with flow (not choppy writing). This is a good book, I wish books were not as expensive. Shipping was great, arrived on time. The class was great, deep learning about the world of Soils.

It's a textbook, not much to say. But it was clean with no marks in it.

According to my professor, this is one of the very best textbooks on this subject. The course has turned out to be life-changing: there is no life on land without soil!This looseleaf version arrived in perfect condition, well packaged, no dog ears or such. Save some money!

I am using this textbook for my Soils class. It is easy to read and has lovely pictures to help explain topics. I haven't used it as much as I should for the class, but it is helpful when I do. Which probably means I should probably read it some more... :)I ordered this book in loose-leaf form and it works perfectly. I have it in a binder with my lab manual. Don't be afraid to save money!

Just completed this booklet in a week and WOW that was fun. Being a map nerd it's hard to NOT like doing this book, but this was especially fun due to all of the supplementary things involved.1. On almost every page there are extensive explanations for WHY you are doing the things the book wants you to.2. Almost every page asks a simple question that requires you to dig a little deeper.3. At the beginning of every chapter is a cool excerpt of how this individual chapter was done in its original context. This was great because it makes you feel like you are "solving" a major issue.Just an overall great book; long enough to cover the majority of intro-level material, but short enough that you can do it in a week like me!

I'm taking my first course in GIS at UCSB, and I decided to get this book to guide me through the learning process of using ArcGis. I just received the book in a very timely manner and I haven't fully put the knowledge to the test, but having read through the first few chapters I can already tell this is going to be a great tool for me as a student.The writing / Instruction is clear, concise, and well structured. There are fully colored and well-captioned images to facilitate the learning. The fore-edge of the book is color-coded (different shades of green) and thus allows you to access specific chapters with more ease! (I thought that was a nice touch!). The more technical sections of the book offer very useful "Tips" on how to do something and/or avoid common mistakes. A dictionary of the technical terms used in GIS and within Arc is located in the back, which is important when putting parts of the text in layman context.Overall, based on what I have seen thus far, I would say this book is probably the best bang for your buck on Amazon. I will come back after I finish the class and the exercises in this book to provide a more comprehensive review of the book and its contents.IMPORTANT: I did not receive a CD with the book. HOWEVER! the key to the 6 month trial of ArcGIS is on the inside of the back cover! Go to esripress.esri.com/bookresources, make an esri account, follow the steps, and use your key there! NOTE: Despite the book being tailored for using ArcGIS, 10.2/10.3, Esri allows you to download the 6 month trial with any version from 10.2.2 up to the most recent 10.4.1 version. Which is a big plus!

This book makes GIS easy to learn. I had a couple of issues midway through (broken references between the downloadable files), but I think the book was designed to expect the reader to remember how to resolve those issues. The author covers material thoroughly enough to instill the material into the reader, yet later expects the reader to recall and perform those tasks without repeating the step-by-step process.This is a good approach to learning. I wonder if listing the page number for the original guide may help some users.By the way, I used this book on version 10.3 and 10.4. I saw no difference in usability.

I am using this for a 10-week Intro to GIS course at my university. I love it! It could not be more clear and easy to follow. I've found very few mistakes, and they have usually been misplaced images that don't affect the walkthrough. The only other area of improvement would be the index - it's not necessarily the easiest to find where you learned something in an exercise, so I recommend taking notes. The glossary is clear and thorough.I bought this rather than renting and I'm happy I did since I expect to use it for reference. If you expect to continue on to more advanced books that may cover similar ground, or if your memory is super sharp, renting may be a good option, though the six-month ArcGIS license seems like it might be worth the price of buying new. The exercises go by very quickly and it would be easy to do the whole book in a few weeks if you were committed.I am using this with ArcMap 10.5.1 and have had no issues with compatibility. However, make sure you check your system requirements if you are new to ArcGIS. This is especially true for Mac users.

This is really more of a workbook to be used with (included) CD. The examples use real maps and there are color illustrations. It's probably good if you are going to be manipulating existing maps and working with aerial photos. Unfortunately, what I wanted was a book that would give some insight into the way this program works, and how to use the drawing functions. I also hoped that it could be a reference book as my co-workers and I (Microstation and AutoCad users) get up to speed with an unfamiliar program. The book includes a glossary and an index, but I have not found much about the many icons. Hence the three of five stars.

The program is so counter-intuitive to use. I dislike the program with a burning passion, but this book is my lifesaver. The steps and exercises in the book really helps me understand the program. As an IT guy, the steps are methodical and to the point, they flow logically, unlike the program. This textbook is probably the only textbook that I actually read for class.

I recently got ArcGIS pro and this manual is not addressed to that. Though that isn't the problem. A lot of the instructions apply between GIS software. I hate it because I use a ton of archival scans of maps (raster as they say) and there is little to no explanation of how to deal with archival sources.It's obvious ESRI is focused on commercial uses for marketing. Not at all for academics doing archival work. I FINALLY found a video from an angel doing similar work to mine. But ESRI was no help. This book was a waste of money.

For professional development, I took a class to get my GIS certification from Cal State Fullerton. This was the required textbook. But what can I say? It's a typical textbook. It walks you through the exercises in a pretty clear and understandable way. Sometimes I had to read it through a couple of times before getting it, but if you apply yourself, I think you will achieve the objective of learning the fundamentals of ArcMap.

It is acceptable, easy to work with, convenient classes plan, but it contains few gramal errors that needs to be corrected. An example of that are the translation "así así " for "so so". Asi asi does not make any sense in Spanish. Also, it translates "brown" color for "café". "Café" is a "brown" color beverage, not a color itself. The correct translation should be "marrón".

I bought this book to use for teaching a small one hour a week Spanish class for students ages 6-9. All of the students in my class have a very limited knowledge of Spanish. It was my first time teaching Spanish to kids so I needed a place to start. The lesson plans in this book have been very helpful. While I don't follow it to a T, it definitely keeps me on track and provides enough ideas that I can then add to each lesson etc. Sample lesson plans from the book go something like this: Introduce new vocabulary, sing a vocabulary related song (lyrics provided in the book), create a learning book (make copies based on model provided in the book) or do a worksheet (also provided in the book), play several games related to the new vocabulary (ideas provided in the book), then review previously learned vocabulary or do an overview of new words to be introduced in the next lesson. There are several work sheet options to choose from for each lesson, so I usually just pick one to do each class based on which one I think will be both the most fun and most effective. I definitely don't do all the work sheets provided or my students would be bored to tears.

This is a great book for teaching beginning Spanish to children. My two older children are 7 and 6 yrs old, and they have just finished this book. It contains colouring pages which reinforce what they are learning, and uses very applicable words. Each lesson is repeated in different ways, so they are learning through repetition without even realizing that it's repeating. Both of them love this, and I have already gotten the next level for them to continue with. They have remembered almost all of the words covered in the first book, and are looking forward to moving on to the next level. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to teach children beginning Spanish. They will learn basic phrases, colours, numbers, items in a house, clothing, buildings (school, library, museum, etc), and many other things. It is excellent value for the money, and could be reused if you make photocopies of the pictures. We ended up purchasing two of them so that each child could colour directly into the book, but it has many resources at the back of the book to photocopy to add to the learning experience, and also includes songs set to familiar melodies, but in Spanish, to teach them some basics.

I purchased this book because I was to teach preK-2 summer school Spanish. I normally teach Spanish, but for 8th and 9th graders. This meant I needed something with lots of pictures and songs. This book was just what I needed! It has lesson plans and reproducible worksheets. I also used some pages from Teach Them Spanish Grade PreK, but this book was the basis for my class, which will be finished tomorrow. This book really helped me figure out what I would teach them and how.

I like the lesson plans in the book and the "song list" this is a good book to help teach Spanish for beginners. The mini booklets and flash cards are a great resource for my kids. I just wish this came with an audio CD. If you are not familiar with Spanish accents or feel comfortable singing you may have difficulty teaching with this book.

Great book for homeschooling. The order of the lessons is confusing but we used the kindergarten book last year so we are used to it.

I use this book for my daughter who I started homeschooling this year. We are doing a kindergarten program and she will be 5 in about a month. Some of it we will probabley save for next year because she doesn't read yet and I think some pages it would be better if she knew how to read to better understand, but she there are a lot she can do and she likes it.

Great book with lots of information about Itasca State Park.

I don't know which is better, the stunning photographs of this northern Minnesota gem in all seasons, or the smart, friendly, fascinating text that brings the park's special universe (and its fascinating past) to life. Let's just say this is the best kind of guide book: both accessible and deep, compact yet amazingly substantial, beautiful and easy to navigate. The photos are knockouts, from vibrant landscapes of Itasca's lakes and forests (and of course, the iconic Mississippi Headwaters) to beautiful close-ups of the plants, animals, and wildflowers that you'll start to notice everywhere once you've read about them.Johnson starts off the book with nine top recommended sites in the park—a sort of greatest-hits. This is followed by a very helpful guide to planning a trip, seasonal activities, lodging, backcountry camping, etc.; trail maps for hiking, biking, and skiing; a guided driving tour; and a lively, engaging (even funny) natural and cultural history of the park, from the animals that historically and presently have called it home, to the indigenous history and settler disruption, to the making of the park as we know it and the CCC's role in it. The strength of this book is the low number of errors, compactness of its presentation, pedagogy, collection of exercises, emphasis of fundamentals, and careful calculation. Rarely is the reader left, unaided and unguided, to fill in gaping holes in logic. It is somewhat slow to work through the dense presentation. Also, the book treats some rather advanced topics (e.g., Matsubara sums, Feynman diagrams, etc.) with the same compactness. I had trouble understanding what the book was trying to communicate while taking a course. However, on revisiting the material after I'd finished the course, I realized the presentation was quite clear, and it was just my extremely-stressed state that was causing me to misinterpret the material.I should also say the extremely-ambitious course I took out of this book tried to cover almost the entire book, _and_ I was underqualified to take the course (I was concurrently taking only my first semester of introductory solid state physics). The book does say it is designed for a 2-semester course, not 1! It should be a statement about the book's clarity that the course wasn't a complete disaster for me...indeed, studying under such an ambitious instructor in such an unprepared state could have been a perfect-storm of a disaster!

This is a very good textbook for beginners to learn many body theory. The 2016 edition has corrected a lot of misprints.

Very condensed and easy to read, probably not a beginners book.

A little bit broken ridge

In its third edition it still contains an unacceptable amount of syntactical and grammatical errors, missing words, wrong formulas and nebulous explanations. For example, the 6th chapter explains linear response theory crystal clear, but the accompanying derivations of the conductivity and conductance formulae are erroneous and do not follow the recipe of linear response theory, which is extremely unpedagogical. Moreover, the book lacks rigour: When one wants to rederive some formulae it can happen that one gets stuck because the authors missed to provide proper definitions.In conclusion, the book by Bruus and Flensberg introduces some concepts in a very clear and pedagogical manner. Other than that the book has some serious faults. The reader has to devote more time to clearing up the mathematics than to understand the physics.

This book is exactly what a new student (with some training in basic grad courses in solid state, statistical mechanics, etc.) needs to grasp condensed matter physics without a "research-based bias." Todays programs are so focused on application that a thorough treatment of pedigogical materials get superfically taught. Philip Anderson warns about this in his timeless classic "Basic Notions." This book uses QFT in canonical picture (bootstraps), no mention of path integrals. I started out in HEP, so I got trained fairly well in path integrals, some may find this a barrier with the book. Luttinger theory is the most modern topic touched on, applications to materials science. I recommend Wen's book if you want to look at Quantum Hall Effects and Topological Orders (post 1980's).

I used this book for my master's project on superconductivity. It gave me a solid basis on many-body theory.

This book offers a fairly decent, thorough treatment of solid state theory, while still being somewhat approachable. However, this book is not for the inexperienced. You should expect to spend lots of time looking up things in more introductory books.

I enjoyed the book a great deal. As a relative newcomer to the sport of rugby, reading about one of the sport's bigger names from a time before I was a fan and hearing an account of the transition from amateurism to professionalism were particularly interesting. There are times that I felt the book got bogged down in descriptions of the minutiae of test matches. However, this may be due to the fact that I know little else about those games and their contexts and I've never watched them. Those who have may find reading Moore's accounts altogether different. The human side of Brian Moore is the most interesting.

As an Irish rugby fan I've cheered against Brian Moore when he was playing for England and for him when he was playing for the Lions. He clearly has the capacity to divide opinion (mainly north and west of the English borders), and is an outspoken and controversial figure in some regard. However you could never accuse him of being boring. I'm not surprised this book won a prestigious award. It is extremely well written, self reflective and at times very self critical. As you'd expect there are some wonderful anecdotes from his playing days, and some horrific anecdotes of the brutality he experienced, and meted out, at the elite level of rugby. Best of all I was left with the impression this is an honest book, some chapters of which must have been extremely difficult for Mr Moore to put down on paper. A wonderful read.

Being a proud Welshman along with probably every other nationality thoroughly disliked "Pitbull" during his playing career however I find him excellent as a commentator and newspaper columnist, he calls it as he sees it and of course with his excellent playing career experience get's it right most of the time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading his latest offering.

Well written, engaging and he makes no attempt to present himself as a likeable guy. He writes it as he sees it and he has some interetsing and thoughtful reflections on how he had luck on his side, and how some players who were as good if not better than him didn't get a chance for different reasons. Some great descriptions of his school days and summer job experiences as well. A great read for anyone interested in rugby.

Anyone who remembers the battles between England and the rest of the rugby world in the late 80's and early 90's will love this. Moore writes so well, and with such passion.. could not put it down!

Worth a read I suppose. Loved the passage on scrummaging, but it's a rather introspective ramble in which the reader is a passenger.

Page after page of true front row grit and skull duggery. Every hooker and prop shoud read this. The book also re ignites memories of amateur rugby and international touring without getting side tracked.

Speaks his mind as in his commentaries and newspaper articles. Great read and a must for rugby fans everywhere... Even Scotland!
