This book is simply the best description of a person's first year experience in law school, although I still have a nostalgia on this topic for "The Bramble Bush" by Karl Llewellyn. Turow was uniquely qualified to write about it: he had spent several years teaching at Stanford before heading off to law school and had engaged to write a book even before he started at Harvard. He then kept notes during that 1L year and wrote the book immediately afterward. Hence, he was an experienced writer who planned well and then wrote the book while the events of the prior year were fresh in his mind.In my case, I graduated law school 25 years ago, but recently completed the LLM & SJD degrees. While this book describes law school culture prevalent back in "my day," I've also seen an immense cultural shift in law schools over the past years. Thus, some of the "hard" aspects of the 1L experience have softened a bit, but certain things have not (e.g., student anxiety).

Someone interviewed in "The New York Times" brought this book to my attention as a classic, real-life Bildungsroman of life at Harvard Law in the late twentieth century. I bought and read it, not because I am a lawyer or aspire to such, but because I am a professional academic who teaches in a different kind of professional school. I wanted a sense of what law school was like for its students, that I might compare it with my own experience and that of others in post-baccalaureate education. Because I knew Scott Turow to be a good writer, I expected a tale well told. "One L" did not disappoint. I agree with other reviewers that the book starts out strong but by the end peters out: in part, because the fresh-faced novice has found his footing (and we knew from the start that he wouldn't flunk out); in part, because this is reality, not a fiction that Turow could confect with a nice twist at the tale's end. However: if you purchase the 2010 reprint, you will enjoy the pleasure of Turow's retrospective insights on his experience, the book's original reception, and how much has changed or remained the same, for good or ill, in high-octane legal education.

Unlike many autobiographical work, I find One L to be relatively honest and open.Because it is non-fiction, the circumstances make it an interesting read in the beginning, but it does not have a plot nor a direction, nothing really gets 'developed' and once you are acquainted with the setting, it becomes less interesting towards the end. I had to google the author (I didn't know who he was) and only after reading his Wiki entry could I motivate myself to finish the book.Also, I am reading it as a thirty-something who's had more life experience than the author did at the point of his writing. Thus some of the difficulties he faced are things I can identify with but consider trivial now. It may be more interesting and useful as a heads up to a slightly younger audience.

I feel like I've been through law school myself, or at least the first year thereof. I have some reverse snobbery about attending Harvard. He may very well have received a better education in California, for heaven's sake. Twenty five years have elapsed since this book was written; has there been any improvement? But Turow grinds his argument to bits, discussing every subtle permutation until you want to scream "stop!" I was growing tired of his style at the end of the book. Perhaps his novels are better.

I enjoyed every page of this book, which is an autobiographical story of his first year at Harvard law school. I was surprised by the hours they studied and the intensity of their work and enjoyed his description of his fellow students and their lives. This book was so well written and of course Scott Turow has gone on to write Presumed Innocent and other gripping novels, sold internationally, and in film.

ONE L is the first-hand account of the 1975-76 beginning year of Harvard Law student turned lawyer turned best-selling author Scott Turow. Turow accurately recreates the insanity of the year by exposing how utterly selfish everyone is or becomes because of the desire to be the best. The professors are driven by ego, the students are driven by fear and greed. Turow realizes that despite his best liberal attempts to stay above the fray that he too wishes to be one of those who finishes on top of the first year grades and thus make the Harvard Review. Well-written, very engaging (although a little too long), and all too real, Turow's book remains the classic to read for those entering LS.

It's a good story. As I read it I kept wondering if anyone who hadn't been to law school would like it. I am going to have my dad, who hasn't been to law school, read it and see. I personally am in my second year and read this book on the two weeks I had off from classes. Despite 38 years going by between him writing this and my first year, I must say, not much seems to have changed in legal education. I could relate to so may of the stories, fears and thoughts running through his head. I felt like the last half dragged a little, but maybe that was him adapting to the lifestyle and having the shock wear off. Overall I enjoyed it, I found myself saving sections to read to my fellow classmates, a fun bonding tool.

I think it's a rite of passage to read this book. I got it for Kindle before law school. I actually made the Kindle read it to me while I drove in the car. It's basically a memoir of a terrifying first year experience that will prepare you for the worst and help you realize that you can survive. Most law school professors aren't that terrifying anymore (although some still are), but the first year is terrifying no matter what. It can be good to read and you won't be the first or the last to read it, but you don't actually HAVE to read it.

You must read this book.When I first purchased it in January, I suggested that this volume may prove to be the most important book of 2018. Now that I have finished it, I believe that it is one of the more important theological contributions of this generation.Kaemingk writes with a clarity and conciseness that is hard to find, which allows him to cover a lot of ground in these 300 pages. This volume treats such diverse disciplines as sociology, anthropology, political theology, soteriology, ethics, and Christian mission, among others. While the focus of the book is the question of Muslim immigration and an appropriate Christian response, it has broader application to a variety of questions pressing the American Evangelical today.Again, at the risk of sounding over-the-top, I believe this is a crucially important volume to read. Evangelicals need to rethink our position and engagement in American society. This volume offers a thoroughly biblical and deeply thoughtful path for us to follow. My hat is off to Dr. Kaemingk.

I hope this gets a wide-circulation. A valuable resource for all of us. It's important to realize how fear can play into our politics and even Christian faith. Let's get the facts and Biblical storyline to be informed.

I was deeply touched by this book and couldn’t put it down. Though my theological journey has led to a different definition of some aspects of pluralism, this is a vivid and lucid witness that I affirm. It offers light and guidance on a troubling and urgent subject. I hope people will take the time to read this thoughtful theological study. In the light of all the Islamophobia in the world, and in our nation's leadership, I only hope it is not too late.

Very insightful and thought provoking

Comprehensive. True. Timely. Powerful. Comprehensive: Kaemingk doesn't just tell Christians what to do. He lays out an ambitious framework for why. Why should Christians react with hospitality? Why should Christians support pluralistic policies and attitudes? Why should we be suspicious of relativism on the left and fear on the right? He gives the theology and historical context of his Christian pluralism space to grow and flourish. He doesn't languish in the minutiae, nor does he rush through the groundwork that is so essential for his argument. True: this book makes a convincing argument. Sincere Christians will find a severe challenge here as well as plenty to evoke hearty "Amen"s. This will be true for readers who identify themselves on the right or the left when it comes to theological and political questions. Whether it is his incisive analysis of modern political theology or his more intimate look at worship and how it forms the local community, Kaemingk simply brings a good word. Timely: the topic of Muslim immigration is heated and full of landmines. Kaemingk dives right into it - providing powerfully memorable stories to pull his reader along. In this book Kaemingk never leads us too far from the practical implications and haunting questions of Muslim-Christian relations. So this book could not be more timely. He spends time giving us the macro-level story of immigration, while reminding us of how this isn't some far-off hypothetical ethical conundrum dreamed up in an ivory tower. These are questions that affect our neighbors and our worship and our witness as Christians here and now. Powerful: the book begins with pictures of the chaos and fear that permeate these debates. It is an urgent topic. And we feel that in our guts. As the book closes, however, Kaemingk also introduces us to more tender, hopeful moments that can inspire Christian action: friends sharing a meal or conversation, a church warmly inviting people from another culture to cook for them and share their culture. Hearts and minds will be edified and, I dare say, transformed in wrestling with this necessary book. This is a cool head, warm heart, and promising "third way" in an age dominated by fear.

I am a pastor and also lead a refugee resettlement office in WA state. For those of us who work at the intersection of the church, public policy, and Muslim immigrants, this book is an excellent resource. Dr. Kaemingk carefully lays the historical and theological footing for followers of Jesus to walk the straight and narrow path of loving our Muslim neighbors. He draws from a careful examination of the Netherlands, which is about 15 years ahead of the US in experiencing a wave of Muslim immigration. I really appreciate that Dr. Kaemingk is honest about the challenges that come with immigrants who have different social practices and theological ideas then the dominant culture they enter. His suggestions for an appropriate Christian response are not wishful platitudes but rather real life, practical and very biblical actions. I will be sharing this book with others in my church and other pastors in my area because it does what all good theology does - it shows us how to faithfully live as followers of Jesus who bring the Bible to bear on real world issues that affect our society right now. Another great book this reminds me of is Evelyne Reisacher’s “Joyful Witness In the Muslim World”.

I cannot say enough about how important this book is. It helps us imagine what it looks like as Christians to be deeply rooted in Christ as we love our neighbors from very different religious and cultural backgrounds by looking at how this is happening in other cultural settings, exploring Scripture and our understanding of Christ in relation to pluralism, reminding us of the importance of worship in our formation as Christians, and inviting us to consider stories of real people trying their best to honor Christ and embody hospitality in their daily lives and callings. It's exceptionally readable and inviting. I can imagine those in ministry reading this book as they seek a vision for how to live and how to encourage those in their ministries to live faithfully as Christians in a complicated cultural time, it would be great for a thoughtful book group to discuss, and should get lots of classroom use in Christian higher ed.

In Family, Nightshade goes from racehorse to highwayman's mount; Black Romany meets Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; and Blossom sufferers from the British disdain for piebald horses. As in Sewell's original Black Beauty, each horse moves though a variety of owners, good and bad, before reaching their happy ending, although friends along the way often fail to get their own (remember Ginger) The period details are marvelous, both the great - as where Ebony becomes a pit pony and later pulls bathing machines - and small - the fashion for children to roll hoops (a threat to horses if they roll underfoot) and the flagman leading the automobile, which later that year would be permitted to travel at FOURTEEN miles an hour instead of the then-legal FOUR, and no flagman would be required to warn horsemen of the car's approach. For children's books, I think these are very well written, although they do contain, as the original did, both death and violence (beating of horses and such), they also contain numerous examples of patience and love.

The three Pullein-Thompsons sisters created a marvellous book in this and its counterpart, Black Beauty's Clan.Each sister tells a story of a horse related to Black Beauty, whether a highwayman's horse, a carthorse, a hunter or a racehorse. Black Ebony, Black Velvet, Blossom and other horses spring to life and show us what times were like and how horses lived and worked.I highly recommend these two books. I have seen one portion sold as a separate small book but all three tales complement each other and it would be very fiddly to try to collect all six separately, if they were even all published that way.The Pullein-Thompsons were sisters who grew up between the wars, when horses were in daily use, and during the second world war they taught riding extensively as there was very little petrol so horses were put back in use. Their own story is told by themselves in Fair Girls On Grey Horses. They have all written horsey books but to my mind the best writer was Christine.Another book like this was Son of Black Beauty by Phyllis Briggs.

Great stories however its a little bizare because Black Beauty is a gelding (No able to reproduce) However that aside these are wonderful stories that are well written and thoroughly enjoyable. I wish more of the Pullen Thompson stories would be put onto kindle as they are truely classic horse stories

I first tried to learn Perl by using the other O'Reilly book, "Programming Perl". I was completely lost. Then I found this book and my second attempt was much more successful. This book is great for self-teaching, and the book chapters should be read in order as each chapter builds on previous ones. Each chapter has plenty of good programming exercises with answers in the back of the book. I review this book in the context of the table of contents.Chapter 1. IntroductionThis chapter answers basic questions such as how to get and install Perl, how to construct a basic Perl program, and then takes you on a whirlwind tour of Perl.Chapter 2. Scalar DataAs a general rule, when Perl has just one of something, that's a scalar, which is the topic of this chapter.Chapter 3. Lists and ArraysIf a scalar is the "singular" in Perl, as described at the beginning of Chapter 2, the "plural" in Perl is represented by lists and arrays. A list is an ordered collection of scalars. An array is a variable that contains a list. In Perl, the two terms are often used as if they're interchangeable. But, to be accurate, the list is the data, and the array is the variable. You learn about these differences through practical code examples in this chapter.Chapter 4. I purchased this book hoping to gain insight into Perl after having experience with C, C++ and Java. I came back with not only a wonderful, base knowledge of the principals of Perl, but came out with some other skills as well.This books provides a wonderful, quick, easy read for beginners and pros alike. The knowledge of the language coupled with the coverage of core concepts, methodology, practices and practical programmatic thinking was a delight to read/review.

I have experience programing, but some of the other Perl beginner books try toput too much in a book for beginres in Perl. This book covers all the basics for someone new to the language

I have programmed in Python and a little bit in C and I think this book is great - and so is perl. I already knew a little bit about perl from reading a Wikipedia article and looking at the perldoc documentation, but Learning Perl taught my some very useful things that I would have never found alone (splicing, nongreedy regexes, just to name a few). perl has amazing support for I/O, and the book helped me understand regexes and file I/O. I found both perl and this book to be good for other things, too. I wrote a logging program that wrote logs with timestamps, for example. Other things I used this book and perl for included a calculator, a text-to-HTML conversion program, and a password cracker. Learning Perl helped me uncover some bugs in my programs, taught me many new things, and was also just a fun read. The only thing I would add would be more about OOP (Object Oriented Programming). I found the TOC (Table of Contents) to be very well done and the e-book version had links to the proper sections. I could find anything quite quickly with the excellent TOC.

How can you program Perl without this book? After years I still use it from time to time when I have a brain fade regarding some common syntax issue.

I had a physical copy of this book that I loaned to a coworker and her dogs got it and destroyed it. This book is an excellent resource not only for learning Perl, but also for using as a quick reference down the road.

I found this book to be rather thorough in its description of the river, access points, camping locations, etc. I had kayak-camped the approximately 40-mile stretch between Calicoon to Mongaup Valley (south of Pond Eddy) in the spring of 2012 on a three-day, two-night journey. Unfortunately, the NY DEC launch at Calicoon was undergoing renovations, and we had to park at the Peck's Market parking lot, which is right on the river. Our take-out was at the DEC Mongaup Valley WMA, where there is a hand-launch. It is located right on Rt. 97, before the confluence of the Mongaup River flow and the Delaware (going south). The path to the water is restricted, so you have to carry your boat and gear about 150 yards to the parking lot from the water up a rocky slope. None of this information is in the book. This is probably because it is not a popular access point, due to the rocky terrain. Regardless, the book is a valuable resource for paddlers and I recommend it to anyone looking to do a trip on the Big D. This summer a friend and I decided we were going to canoe the Delaware from Balls Eddy, near Hancock New York, to tidewater at Trenton New Jersey. Having never canoed more than a few miles of the river this guide was lifesaver as it allowed us to get out and scout the most dangerous of the rapids. For the most part camping locations were up to date. We lived by this book for the entire length of our trip and probably would not have made it through without it. If you are looking for a great summer adventure, grab a canoe, a tent and this book and set off for ten days of fun.

I have owned this book for years, and relied on it for planning multiple trips in the upper and middle Delaware River. The mile-by-mile guides are detailed and accurate, and there's plenty of interesting historical and geographical notes that make the book an interesting read even if you're not immediately planning a trip.

Well considering I read a good part of it online I knew what was inside the book. Informative and a good read for anyone who wants a better understanding of the Delaware River.

This book was used as we paddled through the Delaware Water Gap. the campsites listed were for the most part accurate although where we were planning on camping the sites were so overgrown it was impossible to camp there. The rapids listed were accurate and the guide book was overall very helpful.

The first big plus was that I didn’t spend the entire book wanting Rosie to...well...die. I found her insufferable in the first two books. The author managed to hit a nice stride with her character and put her where she belongs...as a SUPPORTING supporting character. I would’ve given this five stars but the first third of the book was so slow! There were also so many characters and plots that, while tied up in the end, were a bit confusing. And I came into the book having read the first two! Not to mention that Don wasn’t allowed to shine as much as I’d hoped. Otherwise, Don’s escapades-especially with the animals mating idea-had me laughing such I feared giving myself a hernia! Seriously. I laughed until I cried. I hope we’re not done with Don and the fam!!!

Don, is a scientist with Aspergers and his relationship with Rosie is just wonderful. Especially considering where Don started out from, and all the hurdles he had to overcome. Seeing him now with his child, and still going strong with Rosie after 13 years made me love him even more. Personally, I love it when kids are part of a story. Even better if the kid is like Hudson, a mini Don, with all his complexities.I’m not going to lie, I have a weakness for quirky characters.And often that comes when characters who struggle with every day occurrences, social niceties, and an overall way of thinking differently in a world that isn’t very forgiving or tolerant.The Rosie Result is all about Don trying to make Hudson’s life at school easier. The way he goes about is heart warming and so “Don”. Hudson, with eleven years has a mind of his own, and a very strong personality. And I loved how the author took the offerings and advice of a village to resolve it all.Don’s problem solving as always made me grin and chuckle. He still struggles with some aspects but he has Rosie to guide him when unsure. I truly love their relationship. The outspokenness, openness, and honesty between them works wonders.Also incredibly fascinating was the interaction between school and parents, all the small dramas and school politics, especially in regards to Autism. It was a bit eye-opening too if I’m honest. But I loved how united Don and Rosie were in all things Hudson. I could talk for hours about the way Don and Rosie made me smile whenever they played good cop and bad cop – at least their version of it.I believe this might even be the BEST book in this series.That’s actually pretty amazing – it’s rare that sequels surpass the first novel. But for me it’s all about the kids – they make books even better and actually bring out the best in many characters.

My favorite of the Rosie books, and I loved The Rosie Project. This book was funny - some times laugh out loud funny, sometimes eye-rolling funny. It was also imbued with taut writing and warmth, charm, and love. It’s thought provoking discussion of autism was engaging without being heavy or preachy and delivered with care and grace. These books are just happiness for the soul - the third book being every bit as enjoyable as the other two. I am RARELY one to read trilogies, losing interest as I go. The way Mr. Simsion writes in Don’s voice, the clever way the reader knows things that Don does not see, the nuttiness of the characters that surround him - it’s a formula the author pulls off perfectly. And I could not wait to read it. What an enjoyable ride.

An absolutely fascinating and insightful trilogy into the much disputed field of the autism spectrum. As evidenced in this last book, it seems that early intervention (and a father who had experienced the same difficulties) gave the boy a great advantage in learning social skills and yet accepting who he was as a person. The mother provided a wonderful support and back-up to both males with her own intelligence and skills in dealing with their deficiencies. My only criticism is that there was some confusion as to autism's relationship (if any) to Asperger's syndrome, which displays similar symptoms. High intelligence seems to be a feature of both conditions (inevitably in the maths/science field) and perhaps more prevalent in boys than girls? As is ADHD. Future scientists may discover why.

I have read the trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed it.I think we can all identify to larger and lesser degrees with many of the aspects and challenges that “autistic” people face.I found it very well balanced with discussions and thoughts throughout as to the many issues and layers there are to autism and pros and cons of labeling people. It’s not that straightforward!These books will stay with me for a very long time.

This was a really good sequel addressing the natural result of Don trying to raise a son and coming full circle in coming to terms with his childhood struggles and appreciating his father. Here, Rosie is no longer the focus and becomes a supporting character, which is a good thing. Don and Rosie's son Hudson is the object of focus and Don is still the protagonist which is how it should be since being in Don's head is always the most entertaining and moving aspect.

Fantastic finish to the series. I appreciate how the author made all of the characters dynamic. This book isn't just useful for understanding neurodiversity, it is great for showing growth of all characters and not relying on bad/good guy tropes. The book is more realistic because of this.I'm sad it is billed as an ending to the series as I would live to see Don tackle being a grandparent!

The Obesity Code is the 5th book in my non-fiction challenge for 2018. This book was very informative and interesting. It focused on insulin resistance being the trigger for those who struggle with weight loss- more in the long term than short term. It also touched on fasting and intermittent fasting and the pluses of that. Overall, it was an informative read. After that I've stumbled upon this summary book which is very good I must say. If I haven't read the book, this summary would do the job just well.

Like changing science-based information, presented in a way that is easily understood by anyone.

I enjoyed the summary and analysis before I bought The Obesity Code. It encouraged to buy it. I will try to read more of these instant summary books.
