This reasonably priced book is a thoroughly researched history of the discovery and development of Kartchner Caverns, with most emphasis on things up through the purchase of the property by Arizona State Parks. The cave was discovered by Randy Tufts and Gary Tenen in November 1974 and kept nearly secret until the Arizona state legislature voted to acquire the cave in April 1988. After the discovery, Tufts and Tenen, recognizing that the cave could not be preserved forever by secrecy, the traditional means of cave conservation among Arizona cavers, soon decided that making it into a show cave offered the best route to preservation, despite the compromises that required. They spent years, in conjunction with the Kartchner family, trying to figure out how to develop the cave privately. During this period one gets the impression that they were obsessed CIA-wannabes, operating under assumed names and an out-of-state mailing address, as if even the knowledge that they were from Arizona would blow their cover. When plans for that fell through, they ended up getting the state of Arizona to buy the property, using parliamentary maneuvers that kept most of the legislature ignorant of what the money was for until the very last minute. All this takes up 135 of the 165 pages of the main body of the book.The development of the show cave took a lot longer than anticipated, because of studies done and measures taken to protect the environment. I had at the time the impression that approximately equal amounts of effort were going into conscientious development and making a show of how conscientious the development was, and that impression isn't contradicted by the book. Tufts and Tenen remained involved during this period, although perhaps not as involved as they would have liked. Part of the cave was finally opened to the public in November 1999.The writing is what can politely be called enthusiastic, as might be expected from the title, but I got used to it. The book includes a list of the dozens of people interviewed and notes on sources of the facts, nicely done in a way that doesn't clutter the text with lots of footnotes or endnote numbers. There are many color photos of the living speleothems in the cave. The photos tend to be printed a bit dark and flat for my taste, but they do show what all the secrecy and subsequent excitement were about.--Bill Mixon

I purchased the book after taking my first tour through the caverns as after the tour I watched the 20 minute film that quickly covers the cave discovery, efforts to protect the cave from certain looting and destruction, and the clandestine efforts to make it an Arizona State Park in order to protect the caverns while allowing people to see them. I was intrigued and wanted to know the whole story, and I was not disappointed with the book. It's an easy quick read with some amazing historical pictures (the picture of the family that owned the land, covered in mud after secretly touring the caverns is my favorite of the book's pictures). Overall I was pleased with the detail level of the book, and I have no regrets with purchasing it. It is not going to be a best seller as it has no murders, crime, sex, or political intrigue, but a person who buys a book like this is likely, like I was, interested in learning more about the cave history, and the book did that for me.

KARTCHNER CAVERNS, by Neil Miller, tells the story of how these two men discovered and preserved one of the great natural wonders of Arizona. The story is full of twists and turns, much like the cave itself.We learn that caving clubs in Arizona are a secretive bunch for very good reasons: caves, like fossils, Indian artifacts, and petroglyphs, are the targets of considerable greed and destruction. This book documents some of that, illustrating the ticking clock that threatened Kartchner Caverns once it was discovered.Yet even Tufts and Tenen were surprised by just how long that clock ran - 25 years slipped by while they plotted, planned, and recruited allies, including the family that owned the land. At any point in this story, someone could have revealed the secret and doomed the cave. Why this never quite happened is the reason this book is just as much a thriller as it is the biography of a cave and its champions.Randy Tufts and Gary Tenen were two very different people who were united in their love of a cave and their passion to both share and preserve it. Their differences could have driven them apart and doomed the cave, but instead those differences balanced their partnership and made them an excellent team. My take on the situation after reading this book is that there were some essential qualities that made it possible for Kartchner Caverns to become a state park: passion, dedication, and patience as infinite as the patience of a cave that turns dripping water into beautiful formations, ion by ion.The book is lavishly illustrated with photos of the cave and the people who loved it. It also contains a timeline and a bibliography. Deftly blending science with Arizona history, KARTCHNER CAVERNS, like the place itself, is something you'll want to visit again and again.

Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RD, LD, is the manager of Wellness Nutrition Services at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, where she oversees nutrition-related services at the Center for Lifestyle Medicine. December 2017, 51 years old, a non drinker, a non street drug user and yet his liver stopped working. He was told that it was going to go one of two ways. (1) Liver Cancer (2) Liver Transplant that was it. Completely scared, unsure of what to do, he saw this advertisement on TV for this eating regiment for people w/Fatty Liver Disease. He bought the book here. He read the forward and realized this book was written for him! Starting weight 265 pounds. That was January 2018. Following the recipes and guidelines in 3 weeks he lost 15lbs.Seven months later he weighs 197 pounds. He says he feels so much better. He’s off all medication, except for 2.5milgram high blood pressure med. He is continuing with this book.

Still reading it but so far i am learning a lot on my condition and what I should do.VERY informative book. It really put me in check with my fatty liver disease. I highly recommend this to EVERYONE, as there are millions out there with this disease and do not even know it! Mine was found by accident during an ultrasound.GET THIS BOOK!!

It's a great book, well written and easy to understand, with a ton of valuable information to heal your liver. Also delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts. Glad I got it!

Insightful foray into a largely obscure health tragedy on the horizon. The authors' candor and straightforward counsel makes it easy to grasp; not written for academia.

In my opinion.....it was very basic and generic. I didn't feel that 10 pages of references were needed and over 50 pages of strange recipes. I feel that this was written as a preventative book vs. "okay you have Liver decline/Cirrhosis and here's what you need to do" I would also check with your dietitian or doctor about eating that many beans.......depending on the level of liver decline, beans can be very hard to digest and produce extra bile that your body may not be able to handle. I also wish the book had elaborated more on the toxins both food and environmental.

This is a great book. Very informative and covers diet and exercise and how that works together. I highly recommend this book!

This PSALTER HYMNAL is a wonderful book of worship, published by the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) in the late Eighties. It has pretty much all the hymns one could want in a big sturdy book, PLUS a complete Psalter, plus a worship book (forms of worship, etc.). It was so good that it couldn't last -- in 2013 the denomination tried to replace this book with not one, but three: a new hymnal called LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS, plus a separate Psalter and a separate worship book. The new books are fine but I'm still not sure why anyone would want to replace one book with three.Fortunately, this substantial tome is still available, at a good price too (currently $25.00). I recommend it for appropriate liturgical use, or just for those of us who like to collect hymnals or have a few at the piano.

This hymnal contains ALL the psalms (yes, all 150 of them). They are beautifully metered, and the text has been un-adulterated by "gender radicals" that desire to sterilize the bible from "HE,"Man," and "Father." Not only this, but there is an exquisite compounding of great historic hymns and spiritual songs...One of the things that sets this hymnal apart is the fact that it has categories for missions, family and the home, church, etc... I have never seen this complete of a hymnal in all my life. This is literally complete for all walks of life, and not just for Sunday mornings. This means that if you lack great exegesis for the home (with children and such), then this hymnal would be a great way to teach your children biblical concepts of social justice, missions, family life, AND MORE!If I had to choose a hymnal to go in my church, it would be this one.

This is a nice volume. It's as large as many other hymnals, though, with about half the number of hymns...and it's a bit pricier than some. I do appreciate the Psalter, however.

I couldn't love it more....

As a Christian in the Reformed tradition, I enjoy this hymnal a lot. It contains both great hymns and the whole Psalter, as well as great ecumenical and Reformed creeds and liturgy. Why only four stars? Though I generally support updating hymn language you can go to far, and every once in a while the PH does so. Also, some major hymns in the Evangelical and Reformed tradition are missing: in other words, "WHERE IS ROCK OF AGES???" Other than that, it's great.

This was a fairly quick read. I've read Phil's other two books and thought they brought up some points that True Believers should consider, though I have doubts that they would really change the mind of any evangelical.I enjoyed the book, and I'm certainly glad that Zuckerman wrote it. I'm glad he cited the anecdotes of unbelievers being harassed and discriminated against, especially those secularists who have the misfortune of living in the Bible Belt. Christians are told by Jesus to "love your enemies," but all too many of them see unbelievers as spawn of the devil, to be hated and told we will all go to hell. I think all of us secularists are aware of the low opinion the Christian majority in America have of us, but it's still disheartening to me to read that they would never even consider voting for an atheist or avowed unbeliever for any public office. After all, there's not supposed to be a "religious test" to hold public office in our country. And I'm glad he brought up the point about the "under God" clause in the Pledge of Allegiance, because many Americans blindly believe it was always that way, but it was simply added in 1954.There's a lot of anecdotes in this book. It wasn't written as an academic exercise, or a philosophical treatise, so don't expect it to be, nor should you attack it because it isn't. We need books like this from Zuckerman, if only, as he describes it, to give "backbone" to the secularists who are a growing number in America, so I think he realizes that he's largely "preaching to the choir." I'm not crazy about that choice of words, because some brainwashed believers actually think that secularism is some kind of religion, because it's characteristic of atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and humanists, as well as those who simply give no thought to going to church or reading the Bible. In other words, it's a large umbrella. The only criticism I have of this book is somewhat minor, but it still detracts one star from the 5-star rating I would have liked to give it. I expected a lot of anecdotes in the book, including his own personal anecdotes, but I would have liked to see a bit less of talk about himself and his friends.Anyone who reads widely of non-fiction will note that many authors of such works seem to dwell a bit overmuch on themselves and their life experiences. I would have preferred a bit less of talk about himself and maybe a little more about the hardships of being a freethinker in this country that prides itself on being "free."I would encourage True Believers to read this book, too, but even if they do, they may view it entirely through their own ideological lenses. It would be helpful if they reflected on the meanness and narrow-mindedness of many Christians toward their unchurched neighbors.And, of course, any bona-fide secularist should read the book. You might get some ideas from it that would promote some social interaction with other secularists. We are a growing number, and it's time we all came out from the shadows. Some Christians love to promote the notion that they are being hushed or punished or discriminated against. I guess they think being a Christian should make you automatically a victim or a martyr. But the shoe is definitely on the other foot, in America, and that's what this book points out clearly.

What a fantastic book. Zuckerman doesn't try to convert anybody but demonstrates through statistics and anecdotes that being secular can not only be full of meaning and wonder, but in some cases it can leave you better prepared for what life throws at you. This book is extremely well written, moves quickly, and is full of heart.I not only recommend it for us secular folk. Our religious friends and neighbors who are interested in understanding the now 25% (and growing!) of Americans who are not religious will come away with less fear of us. Who knows, they may even find some things to think about.

A wonderful piece of writing by a wonderful Secularist. This is a book that should be read by all those living in the US. It has great information on how secular societies are leading the world in almost all aspects. It also shows how many people live wonderful lives without any religion whatsoever and that is something of great value. This book is easy to read and very straight forward. Pick it up! You won't be disappointed.

An excellent book to explain being non-religious to the religious who can't understand how the secular can have morals and an ethical way of living. For me, it helped me better identify who I am and how to express my views.

Excellent and quick read. I'd highly encourage people who ARE religious to read this book as I think it does an excellent job of dispelling the many unfortunate myths and assumptions religious people make (or are brainwashed to think) about non-believers.
