About the Author

Matt A. Wood graduated with a B.S. degree in Physics from Iowa State University, and Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin. He spent a year as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow at the Université de Montreal in Quebec before accepting a position as assistant professor at The Florida Institute of Technology. He spent the 2008-2009 academic year on sabbatical at Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where he was first introduced to the Python programming language. In 2012 he joined the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Texas A&M University-Commerce as department head. His current research focuses on mass-transfer binary star systems known as cataclysmic variables. He has been an author on more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, and a similar number of non-refereed publications. He lives in Greenville, Texas, and when not doing astronomy or administrative tasks he enjoys playing guitar and bass, walking his Doberman Dexter, and exploring the world with his wife Janie.

I've read every Kay Scarpetta book, and agree with my fellow one-starrers that this one is the worst entry in a series that has been steadily declining for a while now. To spare those of you who haven't read the book the misery, let me sum up the major plot points:1. Kay Scarpetta is brilliant.2. Every man she meets wants to sleep with Kay Scarptetta.3. Every woman Kay Scarpetta meets (other than her niece) is jealous of Kay Scarpetta and/or wants to sleep with her husband.4. Kay Scarpetta and her boring (but brilliant and attractive) husband have tedious conversations in which they make veiled comments about their suspicions that the other one is cheating.5. There's a cute cat.6. There's a cute dog.7. There's an endangered turtle for some reason.8. Oh yeah, there are also some murders, which are miraculously solved out of the blue in the last few pages, with little intrigue or rationale.

Bought this against my better judgement. Her last couple of books were no where near as good as her early writing. This book continues that sad trend.The opening sections are mind numbingly boring. There is a scene on a boat describing a turtle enmeshed with a corpse. The dialogue simply goes on and on - it is repetitious to the point where I just skimmed it. There same happens throughout the book - unendingly detailed pointless conversations. The author also continuously used the phase "but I wonder if that is what he really means" or words similar. In one section that type of phrase is used three times on one page!The connection with the term bone bed is minimal in the story line. I suspect the title was a creation just to make it sound more gory. The scientist could have been killed in the Bronx and it would make no difference to the story.The ending is really unsatisfying. It just sort of ends with the murderer being a character that is not mentioned until the last few pages.This book suffers from an editor who just wants to get another book out. It could/should have been trimmed extensively. The trouble is it would then be a short story.

What can I say about Scarpetta number twenty? I didn't dislike the book, but in my opinion, Cornwell has yet to produce a follow-up book that is in anyway comparable to the quality of her first six to eight books. This review does contain a few mild spoilers!Before I air my complaints, I will give credit where credit is due. Bone Bed reintroduces readers to the Kay Scarpetta they met in Virginia. For the first time in I don't know how many books, Scarpetta is back in her diving gear and working the crime scenes like she used too. That is the one thing I really appreciated about this book. Kay is sharp. I had forgotten what an impressive investigator she could be. As she goes through a crime scene, very little escapes her attention. Her intelligence, ambition, and compassion are magnetic. I can't speak for everyone, but that is the character that captured my attention and held my interest in 90s.With that said, I found her supporting characters highly annoying and redundant. Marino and Benton are still stuck in a downward spiral of regret and resentment. I know that real life issues (you know, your average faked death and attempted rape) don't go away over night, but I think Cornwell has taken it to a level that is entirely unnecessary. I for one, am very tired of hearing the sad song that refuses to end. Benton played dead; Mario got drunk and tried to play hooky. Naturally, these flaws in character will keep the two of them from being best friends and undoubtably leave some skeletons in the closet, but Cornwell has strung it out to the degree that she has allowed it to monopolize the chemistry that made the characters so captivating in the beginning.Another issue I had with this book is that I felt like I had read it already. Scarpetta and her team discover links between several different homicides and find themselves chasing a deranged serial killer. As they close in, the lunatic loses control and ends up going after ... Wait, I don't want to spoil your fun, I'll let you guess, but I'm betting you'll get it right without even having to buy a vowel!! Any of that sound familiar? It's almost as if Cornwell follows a formula. She changes the locations, characters, and modus operandi, but the big picture remains the same. While this formula may be making her millions, it has flattened her series and turned into average and predictable. She has sold Scarpetta out and it's a d*** shame.

I bought this slogged through 7-8 chapters of emotional garbage, then tossed the book. I love a clean cut detective story, one that moves along sharply like a Connelly or Coben or Rendell or Burke--and by early Cornwell. I don't care what the characters wear, what they eat, why their feelings are hurt. I don't want to psychoanalyze every character, to deal with the psyche of Lucy. I don't care why she's hurt or gay or whatever. Too complicated to believe as are all the relationships in this one--between Kay and Marino, Kay and Benton, Kay and Lucy. After 6 chapters there's still a lady in the water while emotional entanglements are worked out. Just get the plot going for Pete's sake. Glad I paid only $1.99 for this one.

This is a much more thorough account of not only the event of the New Madrid earthquakes in 1811 & 1812 than the book The Day the Mississippi Ran Backwards. I am fascinated with learning more about natural disasters which have occurred in the past. This book only gets 4 out of 5 stars because at least once it almost lost my interest but I kept reading anyway. I'm glad I did. This book gives a a really full picture of life in that area during that time period. The author comes forward through time to more recent times sharing the development of seismology but along the way the author tells why the New Madrid quakes were disregarded and nearly forgotten. I did enjoy this book and will likely read it again.

I thought the book was going to be a popular science, geology book, but it wasn't. There was some geology, but it was mostly a social history that drew many questionable conclusions. I read less than a quarter of it before putting it aside.

Instead of simply discussing the physical impact of this a catastrophic event, Valcencius embeds its consequences in the ethnic, religious, and economic milieu of the time. A great piece of investigative history, I heartily recommend it

I live about 80 miles from New Madrir, so I'm curious about the history of the region. This book is one of the best accounts I have found.

This book was not what I expected. I expected more on the science and less on personal accounts. The portion on native Americans was wy too long.

I liked it because I like history and this book gave the history of the New Madrid Earthquakes from several different perspectives. I especially liked the chapter on the earthquakes and how they were part of a religious revival.I did find one typo on page 114 "1895" is listed as a date for some of Tecumseh's activities and on the same page "1805" is listed as a date for some of his other activities. Page 112 has "1813" as the date of Tecumseh's death, so something seems to be out of sequence.Other than that, I liked the book and highly recommend it to other people interested in the history of the quakes. I guess I am especially interested in this topic because I live in North Little Rock, Arkansas, which will probably be decimated when the next New Madrid area earthquake(s) of the same magnitude occur.

This book is a seminal work. It is a comprehensive rendering of the events before, during and after the tragic New Madrid earthquakes which occurred in December, 1811 and January and February 1812. There were thousands of other, smaller quakes before and long after.I’m qualified to write this in praise of Professor Valencius because I’ve written extensively on the NMSZ (New Madrid Seismic Zone.) and served as a consultant to county disaster preparedness groups to aid in their compliance with state and federal readiness. Our home just happens to sit on the epicenter of the December 16th, 1811 quake, four miles south of the Missouri Bootheel.I’ve followed her down many of the same roads of research but she drilled much deeper than I did for I was only writing a novel. She has researched the only clues to what happened in taking most seriously the writings of the period be they understated or overblown. Her coloration of the people of the era is illuminating. The other twenty five percent of this work is most of the geology of these horrific events and is of equal interest.If you have no interest in the NMSZ or mid plate phenomena, this may not be your book. However, if your interest is passing or passionate you will be consumed by the Professor’s evidence and conclusions.Conevery Bolton Valencius has researched and written the gold standard of our understanding of these incredible and horrible events. No other book even comes close, not even mine.

I used to be a huge fan of Caroline Myss, but my attempt to read this book a second time has sworn me off her for good. Ms. Myss' work is light compared to the works of Jung and what truth Myss fails to tell you is that her "wheel" truly represents is your astrological wheel. Because the planets were in alignment in a particular way the day you were born, it's subject to change ALL THE TIME. She fails to tell you this and because she intentionally hides this from her readers, it renders half her book useless. Knowing this, I had to put the book down and gave it away to a local library. Myss is a great writer and a gifted storyteller, but she also perceives herself to be better than everyone and entitled to being treated like a queen. Don't believe me? Just go to one of her workshops and watch what happens if she doesn't have access to hot coffee upon entering a cafeteria. I saw her go from a contented soul to a raging queen in less than 2 minutes. Over time, what I've learned is that Myss appeals largely to upper class, middle-aged white women who are bored with their lives and need to find something else to do with their time. Many people who read books and attend her workshops have now heard her SAME message for nearly two decades. What amazes me is that they REFUSE to learn the lessons she's teaching, and Myss remains all too happy to collect money from them. A good teacher is one who gives you the lessons you need and then says "go make your way into the world and spread these truths." Another issue with this book is that Myss attempted to turn it into a business model by offering a "certification" program so you could start your "Archetypical consulting firm," which was a huge insult to her followers. It was a pure money grab and you didn't need HER acknowledgement to learn to do this work--all you needed was a brain, some business acumen and maybe software from Tarot.Com and you were in business! If you spent upwards of $6,000 for her program, maybe you should have read your wheel more to find out if THE FOOL was living in your 9th house. But back to this book...Myss offers lots of interesting stories about her to make many of her teaching points, which seemed fine in the first reading. But at the end of the day, this book ends up being HER process and she tends to skim the Archetypes without depth. If you truly want to understand who you are and want spiritual direction, this is not the best book for you.

When i got my divorce, this book helped me immensely. I live my life now with the philosophy that everyone is here to teach us something and once you’ve learned all you need to from them, the leave your life. Good, bad everyone is here to teach us something. Great book!

Love this book. I find i have to study it and read several parts a few times to grasp the concepts. Look forward to the application of creating an archetypal chart.Also, it helps to watch Caroline Myss' videos in You Tube.

This author was recommended by a friend and so I brought a copy of Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts. I like Sacred Contracts so much that I bought a second copy, as a thank you gift.

This book is a must read. Carolyn Myss makes such good sense of who we are and why we are the way we are. I love that she talks about contracts and archetypes. She recommends we keep a journal as we read the book. I found that to be an excellent suggestion. My recommendation is to read only a few chapters at a time. There's a lot to reflect on. This is my second time reading this book after 8 years. I'm getting so much more this time around.

Myss is the best! This work is her 'baby' and anyone who has been a student of Myss knows she has a 'takes no prisoners' style. I listened to this audio version while driving and it was very powerful for me. Even though I have the book,this class (CD)really helped clarify for me many of the ideas presented in her book.

I received the book on Jan. 26th and begin reading it that day. I really am getting into it although I haven't finished it. I see no reason not to finish it. As i read more about the author, I am interested in more of her works.

This is a great book for anyone who likes working with archetypes. The author is a master of that and this book is a great one to help you find out about yourself and your personality traits through your identification with these archetypes.

Just picture a book that over two pages shows you 20 photos of each step to make a cross stitch motif that has a stitch count of 11 x 11 and incorporates thirteen seed beads of two colors. The first two photos show you how to make a waste knot and where to bring up the needle for the first stitch and the last two photos show you how anchor the final thread and then the waste knot on the back of the fabric. Also on these 2 pages are the two graphs for the motif and four line drawings showing where the needle is inserted and comes out of the fabric.Who'd a thunk it? I've made cross stitch projects with beads but this is a new technique to me. Even though I'm in the middle of a bunch of projects, I feel like wiping my slate clear and making one of these projects right now...the difficulty would be choosing which one. Japan has suddenly brought forth a new book that will take the U.S. and Australia by storm. Japanese and Chinese embroidery books have been pouring forth recently and this one is a doozy to tempt beaders who make jewelry as well as embroiderers and needlepointers to expand their repertoire of stitches: we see how to incorporate beads in what looks like such a natural and easy way. And use a bugle or line of seed beads as the full satin stitch or as an occasional little nugget that makes it 3D.My eyes are also lingering over the couched trellis stitch page with five rows of modifications, each in three colorways. The photos on the right display how to make the tic-tac board and then glam it up with beads. If you want to see how easy it would be to make an itty bitty flower design using waste canvas, look at page 10 with the six close-up photos and directions.I've never seen a book to be so filled with such close-up color photos of the stitched motifs lined up on the left page with the steps lined up on the right. Literally, the colorful little birdie on the left attracts your eyes and draws them to the right so you want to pick up a needle and get going right then and there. They must have studied subliminal messages!It's almost over-kill: on pages 18-21 are 10 ethnic costumes for itty bitty male and female figures with the flags of countries ranging from Mexico to Peru to Finland. (Interestingly, not Japan or the U.S.) The figures are photographed in five steps each. Not clear enough? On pages 69-73 each figure has about 8 line drawings showing each stitch with the placement, the color of the beads and fiber.When Amazon took down customer-uploaded images from the top of the page and then stuck them down to the right of the reviews, I vowed I'd never upload another. But I just can't resist showing you what I'm talking about. Please click on them and see why I'm so enthusiastic.I own hundreds of needlework books, 800+ before I started paring down my library, and my husband will roll his eyes when he sees I got another. But this is truly historic to me.

Great little instructional and inspirational book! If you love embroidery and you love beads, this book offers the perfect combination of both. For the most part, the motifs are small and quick to stitch. They utilize simple embroidery stitches and beading techniques, and are perfect little additions to crazy quilt squares and other embellished embroidery works. The diagrams are very clear, and the organization of the book is well done, with a good index at the end where each technique is clearly explained. It's a fun book, with lots of colorful little samples to stitch!

Great book for the beginning bead person all you'll need is your imagination! Although I thought the book was JUST beadwork I was suprised to learn that it's embroidery stitches incorporating beads into the designs...it was a nice suprise. The photos and directions are clear and all I need now is for my mind to be creative and decide how I'll use these on my doll clothes collars etc. etc. 100% satisfied with this purchase and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another from this author.

This book has dozens, maybe hundreds of motifs... beautiful designs, flowers, "critters" and even sweet treats to do up in bead embroidery. There are even tiny flags and ethnic costumed bead doll embroideries. The step by step process to make each one is clearly outlined in charts and pictures and ideas given for their use on items of clothing and accessories.

The samples in this book use beads to accent small embroidery motifs that can be used as entire projects or as small embellishments alone. Written step-by-step detailed instructions with color photos guide you through each motif. This book would be excellent for anyone from the beginner to advanced embroiderer. I am very happy to add it to my reference library.

I like to do bead embroidery. This is a good book to get new ideas.

This book but is nicely done and the photos are good but I was looking for larger design motifs. There are a couple of largish motifs but the rest are teeny, tiny. If you want to embroider a lot of tiny people in their cultural clothing, this is the book for you.

I always loved reading Dominick Dunne's articles in Vanity Fair and I also have his book "The Way We Lived Then" so I was very anxious to read this book - and glad that I did. This book is a biography of his life but also provides a view of how he covered his daughter's murder trial, the OJ Simpson trial, OJ's 2nd trial, and Phil Spector's trial. It also discusses how he wrote all of his novels and provides back stories about who the characters are really based on. Covers his friendships, his downfall from Hollywood, and how he rose up again to become the darling of the rich.The writing style of this author is really good and this book was hard to put down. There is a lot of Hollywood inside information provided (e.g., who knew that Nancy (Davis) Reagan was known in Hollywood for a unique talent she had to make men happy). This book dishes on lots of people but mostly, of course, on Nick (as Dominick was called by his friends).There were a couple of things that I didn't like: 1) the author's continuous writing about Dominick's homosexuality - OK, I get it, he was gay; and 2) wrong facts (example: author states that Dominick visited the same health clinic in Germany where Farah Fawcet died....really? If I recall, she died in Los Angeles and NOT in Germany. Makes me wonder if the author got other "facts" incorrect but since I'm not privy to all these Hollywood people and their private lives, as a reader, I have to assume that all other things in the book are true.If you liked Dominick Dunne as an author and columnist; if you like reading the scoop about Hollywood and other celebrities - people both still living and those who have died, then this book is for you.

Dominick Dunne was a great crime reporter, a best-selling novelist, and an unrelenting gossip monger. But the true story of his own life is more compelling, hilarious, and heartbreaking than anything he wrote. Bob Hofler’s biography captures the man in full—along with a sensational supporting cast of scandalous movie stars, criminals, and media personalities who, for better and for much worse, helped mold our celebrity culture.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Dunne in the early 80's not too long after his daughter died. At that time I was a young man and he struck up a conversation with me and eventually invited me back to his hotel room in the most elegant way. I declined but joined him the next day for a drink as he had the most fascinating stories. I didn't really know who he was at the time other than Dominique's father but he would stay in touch when he came through town. He was a kind and fascinating man who seemed very conflicted but I always appreciated his kindness and his not taking offense to our relationship staying platonic. The book in my opinion treats him quite fairly.

Well written, really flows. It does its subject proud. I enjoyed it very much.Dunne had such an interesting life. He met and was involved, often just peripherally, the lives of so many famous people. And he had a heart, even as he dropped names and sought approval from society types and magazine editors. The book goes into all this and shows Dunne in all his facets. His good and bad points end up as endearing.

In late 2009, I read and reviewed Dominick Dunne's last book, "Too Much Money", which was a sequel to his earlier, and better, book, "People Like Us", which was my favorite Dunne novel. in my review of "Too Much Money", I wrote that Dominick Dunne appeared to "out" himself in the book. (The book had more than a few gratuitous gay sex scenes, which just wasn't common in Dunne's previous writings). Well, imagine my surprise, when reading author Robert Hofler's new and dishy book, "Money, Murder, and Dominick Dunne", that Dunne was gay, even though he had been married and had three children.Hofler's book is a breezy and deliciously dishy book about Dunne and the people he either loved or hated. There were many in both groups. Dunne' life had both tragedy and great success, after a period of down-and-out drug and alcohol abuse. His beloved daughter Dominique, an actress, was murdered by her boyfriend and the man received a light sentence. That began Dominick's life-long interest - I don't want to call it an "obsession - in criminal justice, or "injustice", as is often the case. He became a writer - and quite successful, at that - after years on a downward progression. He covered many trials, all of famous people - he once told a fellow author he didn't cover the trials of non important people. His books were mostly fiction; he wrote nonfiction for "Vanity Fair".Dominick Dunne lived into his 80s. He left a strong record of work. Robert Hofler's book is a nuanced look at a very interesting man, often at odds with himself. And it really is "dishy"!

I enjoyed this book. Dominick Dunne was an unique individual that seemed to have a rollercoaster life that was incredibly interesting. I first recollect seeing him attending the O J Simpson trial and was taken by his reaction to the verdict. He looked positively shocked. As was, of course, all of America. Dominick Dunne was a complex man. He could be difficult and snobbish but also compassionate and loving. He seemed to have planned his exciting life right up until the end, with some twists and turns that made it extraordinary. His existence made the world a little more fascinating.

The truth of the Cold Wart that began in 1945 was often much different than the pro-American/Western European propaganda, or pro-Communist propaganda portrayed by the big media outlets between 1945 and 1989. While reporters often reported information in a manner that cast their own countries in a positive light, the reality that they saw out in the field was often much different. Joseph Frazer, one of the top reporters in the field during the final decade of the Cold War offers the reader a unique perspective on what was really going on in El Salvador, one of the last major conflicts in the Cold War. Frazer depicts this conflict as one of the bloodiest engagements in the Cold War that cost thousands of lives and virtually decimated the indigenous tribes of El Salvador. He makes no bones about the fact that neither the Communists, nor the Americans had particular care about the lives of non-combatants including his fellow reporters and that this was a war in which any collateral damage was perfectly acceptable.This highlights a very negative time in American history in which the lies we were told by our government covered up genocide, racism, and a war that forced many El Salvadorans to flee their homeland. The book was excellent, detailed and well-written. I grabbed this when it was free and would gladly recommend it event at full price.

Joe Frazier's account reflects his background as an AP correspondent. He works hard, eschews fancy prose and tells you what happened. I spent four years at the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador; Joe and I overlapped for much of the time. Now as then, he is smart, comprehensible and engaged. He is not settling scores and I do not think any unbiased observer would find his work anything but honest.If you have strong opinions and want them reinforced, there is plenty of stuff out there for you.If you want to read a fair account of a people, a country and a policy shot through with contradictions, you should buyr and read this book.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I appreciated the stories and perspective of the author, to the reader this book provided a pretty balanced understanding of the challenges of the civil war in El Salvador. The book tells the story of the war through different perspectives and stories, trying to make sense of it all. I particularly liked the chapter on Oscar Romero.The only drawback for me was the editing, there were quite a few editing and grammar mistakes, and at times there were sections that were difficult to understand because of that. Despite that, I still enjoyed the book.

Three wars later, Americans have forgotten the proxy wars that were fought in Nicaragua and El Salvador (as well as Guatemala and Honduras, by implication) throughout the 1980s and which dominated the national media. As the author reminds us, the Reagan Administration's fear of another Nicaragua, or worse, another Cuba, in Central America brought the tiny nation of El Salvador into the Cold War maelstrom. Mr. Frazier takes us back to that time not as a historian, but rather, from the perspective of a journalist who actually witnessed, reported on, and was himself victimized by this tragic conflict. While his perspective his first-hand and personal, Mr. Frazier addresses the political and social currents that the drove the conflict and how this otherwise seemingly irrelevant (from an American foreign policy perspective), tiny nation became the epicenter of perhaps the last East-West conflict. This book is essentially for anyone seeking to understand the first-hand effects of American foreign policy decision-making, particularly how those decisions played out in Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s.

I was disappointed that there wasn't more about Frazier's wife who was killed in El Salvador. I found her story to be very compelling.That said, any story about Salvadorans is always great. The Salvadoran people are generous, thoughtful & unique people; at least the poor and middle class are.If you plan to go to El Salvador, make sure you read this first!

Joe Frazier waited nearly three decades to process events he covered in Central America — including events that he personally suffered through, namely the death of his wife, Tico Times journalist Linda Frazier, at the hands of a Sandinista- commanded Argentine terrorist who blew up a press conference she was covering at La Penca in 1984. The book refreshingly lacks the blatant cheerleading for leftist forces that permeates far too many Western journalists' accounts of events in Central America that were written at the time.

I've searched long and hard for a decent book written about the recent war torn history of El Salvador and haven't found much until this book. It is a must read for anyone with even a remote interest in US foreign policy in Central America.

Very enjoyable read, with a lot of unique stories from the author's time in El Salvador. Having covered both sides of the war, his perspective is more nuanced than most accounts of the war. I only wish the book were a bit longer.
