Interesting and fun book to read thru
This book gives good coverage of the history of astronomy from the earliest, prehistoric days, up almost to the discovery of the first quasar. Pannekoek as an expert astronomer is very good on the technical difficulties to be overcome at each step. Of particular interest is his account of the emergence of the German optical industry, which was largely stimulated by astronomy. You probably won't realise at first or second read that the author is the notorious originator of "Left Communism" or "Council Communism" that so annoyed Lenin that he wrote a book against it! But Pannekoek was an old-school scholar, and didn't believe in politicising everything.
The only reason I don't give this five stars is that some of the historical ideas in here have a sort of outdated feel. still it's beatifully written, and the professor who wrote it obviously really came alive while talking about astronomy. Look at some selections from the table of contents, and see if it whets your appetite. Old Babylonian Sky Lore... Assyrian Astrology... Chaldaean Tables (of the stars)... Gree Poets and Philosophers... Arabian Astronomy... Copernicus... Kepler... Newton...If this is the kind of thing that floats your proverbial boat, you could do a lot worse than this book. It really is very beautifully written, too -- if you happen to be familiar with, and enjoy, Olaf Stapledon's writing style, you'll find this to be very pleasing. You might want to keep a dictionary of astronomical terms handy, if you are someone who loves the drama of the historical clash of Science versus Dogma, but aren't necessarily that familiar with words like "azimuth", "declination", etc. Also, if you like this, you may want to seek out the jourrnal "Isis", which specializes in the study of the history of science.
Although published in 1961, this book provides a lucid, engaging, and comprehensive review of the history and practice of astronomy from the pre-Babylonian era to the early 20th century. While lacking in depth due to the survey nature of the work, the information presented is relevant, insightful, and interesting. The flavor of the different eras when astronomy was practiced is certainly tasted as well as insights into the people who viewed the skies above. A great book for a survey of the history of astronomy. A useful project would be to append the book with the astronomical knowledge gleaned in the past century, which would show just how rapidly our knowledge of the universe has been expanding in the recent past.
This is more of a reference book than something you would sit down and read. The chapters on early Assyrian, Chaldean, Greek and Chinese astronomy are comprehensive and well-researched. If want an exciting read, I would recommend anything by E.C.Krupp (Echoes of the Ancient Skies) or Dava Sobel (Longitude) instead.
EXCELLENT...

The kindle edition has absolute terrible photo quality. and the photos are the book. it's a shame. not worth the money on kindle.
There isn't a ton of text in this book, but what's there is perfect. Between the pictures and the text, the book really decodes what makes a Japanese garden a Japanese garden. It also tells the story behind many of the elements in traditional Japanese gardens, and the photos are simply drop-dead gorgeous. It gave me lots of ideas for my blank-slate backyard, and tons of inspiration to get started on my own Japanese garden.
Beautiful but limited to a few gardens
As the heading says...looking at the gardens pictured here in this book can make me feel almost as good as I would there in those gardens and I have been, there, in some of those gardens.
Bought it as a Christmas gift for my friend who had just returned from Seattle & Portand and saw many such gardens on her trip. She loved it!
This book is full of wonderful views of amazing gardens. It is a picture book. The Japanese refuse latin making it difficult to identify plants and trees. I. E all spruces are ezo spruce. Great to look at not much else
Japanese gardens are for the soul.Makes one feel so at one with nature.Excellent book in words and photographic content.
Great ideas, great pictures, really great book. Highly reccommended for anyone interested in re-doing their yard or a part of their yard.

I really enjoyed reading about Sy'Noba and Eze. They are both powerful forces, but they had to find their own way. That's what makes this book different from the other paranormals by Natavia. Everyone around Sy'Noba and Eze knew what lied ahead but wanted them to find their own path. Noba is a force to be reckoned with, she's a beast with the spears. Eze the King of the lost land played no games when it came to his mate. I like the sabres because they were for peace, but some of the lions lost their way when Y'kiki left. Lynx got on my nerves but I'm glad she found her happy. Quanir kept me in stitches, I'm interested to find out more about his and Toyi relationship. Asha should have changed her ways sooner, Koja and Naji met their fate trying to go against the king. Anyone looking for a good read this is the book for you, Natavia is not afraid to step outside the box and I love her for that. Her stories are very detailed, thought provoking and she always brigs the funny 😂😂. ROAR is not to be slept on!!
I really wish I could give this story more stars. Ms. Natavia did a really great job with this book. The story flowed like she lived it and is just retelling what happened. It was detailed and I wasn't lost with all the different characters along the way.it was well written and definitely a page turner!!! I loved the way Eze and Sy'Noba found out their truths through their relationship. Even though they didn't always see eye to eye they had a peaceful love!!! I know we will probably see more of the characters but this was definitely worth the wait!!!
Everytime I read one of your paranormal books i get so engrossed I want to be in it, I loved this. Quanir was a fool, his mouth was just reckless. I wished we had gotten some pov's to see how he was thinking, especially when he became a family man. Sy'noba and Eze def beat a lot of odds to be together, thank goodness they got it right this time. I was happy lynx changed, she was really irking my nerves in the beginning. It was a great book that kept you entertained throughout, the action was just non-stop. Great read, we want more.
This standalone was a real page turner and had me laughing my butt off. I cried a few times as well. Family will screw you over faster than a nicca on the street. I’m happy it was a happy ending and love conquered all the road blocks thrown their way.
I am such a huge fan of Natavia paranormal books. This book was so good I could not put it down. I don’t want to give anything away but you will not be disappointed. I can’t wait for the next installment.
I loved this love story. The fact that it was animals was even better. Your research on these kinds of books showed through the whole book. Its very well written and you make it easy to follow. Absolutely amazing job 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Creative. It explored the complicated routs love can take. Passionate love scenes . Sizzlin hot. It had something for strong men and women
Natavia girl you have done it again. Another paranormal banger!!! I loved Sy and Eze relationship. They fought for their love all the way to the end. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Usually I hate these overbroad aftermarket service manuals, but so far this one is pretty good. The electrical diagram for my motor is perfectly accurate and all of the procedures have worked as described so far.One minor complaint is that there is no procedure for troubleshooting the thunderbold ignition switch box; says it MUST be tested with a factory tester. Well there's a perfectly good procedure here published for free which I used successfully http://issuu.com/cdielectronics/docs/practical_ouboard_ignition_troublesGenerally a prefer factory service manuals but I can't even find one for my motor it's so old. So this was a good use of $30.
I don't know the other similar books though, so I can't compare to to other brands. I was just happy to find a service guide for such an old motor.
Loads of clear pictures and good explanations that are easy for anyone to understand. Also has lots of "words of warning" for points of concern and they're written in layman's terms so everyone can understand, kind of like when your Grandfather pointed something out to you that was important to know before you made a mistake. I don't think you'll find another manual out there that is both affordable and readily available to the general public for marine repair manuals.SELOC prints GREAT manuals!
I have a 1971 thunderbolt 800, 80 hp. This manual is ready to follow and includes all the information you will need to maintain, repair and adjust your Mercury outboard motor. I have enjoyed it so much I take it to work with me to read in my spare time.
Looks to be a good book I haven't used it for any major repairs yet but it is a typical aftermarket manual it covers a lot of years so it is lacking on key detail but a little common sense and basic know how and it will be fine.
Good manual easy to use and it came quickly
Its a general guide for all motors that fit the description. I'll use it on my engine.

Probably one of the most engaging and exciting books I've ever read. I am a Cultural Anthropology major (art, history of literature, social psychology) and this book is right in that tradition. I had heard and given lip service to the concept of the ideal mean ("The da Vinci Code") but had not understood how it was derived until reading this book, nor did I realize that as people became more urban and modern (taller and thinner) the ideal changed, too.Lots of information about what we don't actually know about ancient art, which I found fascinating, like a forensic detective tale. I loved and guarded what seemed like every sacred minute of reading this book.
It is my opinion that Kenneth Clark's THE NUDE should be in every artist's library. If I taught figure drawing, this would be required reading for my students. It is a history of the nude in art, but Mr. Clark was clever not to tell the story in a chronological way. He describes the evolution of the nude from the sculptures of the gods to the emotions that the nude represents; emotions such as energy, pathos, and ecstasy. It is not just history, however. There are essays on the difference between "nude" and "naked." Mr. Clark talks about the nude and Christianity and the nude as an end in itself. This is also an excellent book for those who work as artist's models. It will give them a sense of their importance in the creative process, even when they find the student's depiction of them less than satisfying.
I read this book when I was in college and read it again forty years later and made six Power Points with most of the images mentioned in the book. And taught a class on it. I think that Clark is a wonderful connoisseur. He has such an appreciation for the nude in art, and he has seen and thought about so much art, Possible reasons someone might not love this book. ...the illustrations are in black and white, not every art work that he mentions is illustrated. (he expects you to know what he is talking about). His dividing the nude up into different types . . .ecstatic, energy, pathos, etc is a little artificial. I really like being exposed to someone's strong responses and discriminating eye.
Cheap production quality and very poor image reproduction. Kenneth Clark's writing deserves better. A book should be a joy to read and handle, not just a container for information. This one is not.
This book is diametrically opposed to the art history theories put forth in today's art world. If you want to discover some of the secrets of truly great artists I would suggest you read this book.
Still the tops on the subject of nudes. The standard readable scholarship covering detailed information on the important periods, styles and personalities. Heavy aesthetic considerations backed by solid evidence.
Masterpiece.
It seems like nearly everyone who has an opinion about nude art has read this seminal work. Sir Clark's arguments are well-formed, thought-provoking, and amply legitimized by references to other sources. If you are interested in the debate surrounding nude art, then you should absolutely read this book, and John Berger's "Ways of Seeing," which includes a chapter where he specifically debates Sir Clark's book. If only our modern politicians could express themselves with such grace and consideration for each other!

Review
"These pages make enthralling reading....It is indispensable for any psychoanalyst—and not only for psychoanalysts, of course. Damasio is the closest thing we have in the post-truth era to a great public intellectual."—Mark Solms, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association“Nietzsche would have given four cheers for this intricately argued book, which is at once scientifically rigorous and humanely accommodating, and, so far as this reviewer can judge, revolutionary….From Plato onwards, western philosophy has favoured mind over “mere” body, so that by the time we get to Descartes, the human has become hardly more than a brain stuck atop a stick, like a child’s hobbyhorse. This is the conception of humanness that Damasio wishes to dismantle. For him, as for Nietzsche, what the body feels is every bit as significant as what the mind thinks, and further, both functions are inextricably intertwined....There are echoes here too of William James, that most endearing of philosophers, as when Damasio pauses for a brief, Jamesian consideration of the anomalous fact that for all the hi-tech sophistication of modern life, we still cling to the primitive pleasure and reassurance of the domestic fireplace. And James would have been delighted by Damasio’s “everydayness”, his readiness to acknowledge the fundamental underpinnings of even our highest endeavours....But Damasio, while ever ready to salute his predecessors and peers, is wholly his own man, and The Strange Order of Things is a fresh and daring effort to identify the true spring and source of human being – of the being, in fact, of all living things – namely feeling.”—John Banville, The Guardian“A radical revision of how we understand mind, feeling, consciousness, and the construction of cultures…. Damasio draws a visionary link between biology and social science in a fascinating investigation of homeostasis—the delicate balance that underpins our physical existence, ensures our survival, and defines our flourishing. At the heart of his inquiry is his lifelong interest in the nature of human affect—why we feel what we feel, how we use emotions to construct selfhood, what makes our intentions and our feelings so frequently contradictory, how the body and the mind conspire in the inception of emotional reality. What emerges is not an arsenal of certitudes and answers but a celebration of curiosity and a reminder that intelligent, informed speculation is how we expand the territory of knowledge by moving the boundary of the knowable further into the unknown.” —Maria Popova, Brain Pickings“Almost a quarter century after Descartes’ Error, Antonio Damasio has done it again—created a grand exploration of the inextricable relationship between mind, body, and the source of human feelings. Along the way, Damasio takes the reader on an adventure that starts with the single-celled organisms that existed billions of years ago, proceeds through the development of nervous systems and brains, and culminates with the origin of consciousness and human cultures. Thought-provoking and highly original, this book can change the way you look at yourself, and your species.” —Leonard Mlodinow, author of Subliminal“The Strange Order of Things is a foundational book. It provides the concepts, the language, and the knowledge to explain in an integrated framework the interplay between Nature and Culture at the heart of the human condition. Damasio unveils the codes and protocols that make humans human. After a long period of fragmentation of science, he ushers in a paradigm that reunites scientific knowledge, beyond the diversity of its fields of inquiry, around the study of the networks of the mind in communication with the networks of its biological and social existence. This is the beginning of a new scientific revolution.” —Manuel Castells, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of California, Berkeley“In The Strange Order of Things, Antonio Damasio presents a new vision of what it means to be human. For too long we have thought of ourselves as rational minds inhabiting insentient mechanical bodies. Breaking with this philosophy, Damasio shows how our minds are rooted in feeling, a creation of our nervous system with an evolutionary history going back to ancient unicellular life that enables us to shape distinctively human cultures. Working out what this implies for the arts, the sciences and the human future, Damasio has given us that rarest of things, a book that can transform how we think—and feel—about ourselves.” —John Gray, author of Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals“Following Oliver Sacks, Antonio Damasio may be the neuroscientist whose popular books have done the most to inform readers about the biological machinery in our heads, how it generates thoughts and emotions, creates a self to cling to, and a sense of transcendence to escape by…[the book] mounts his boldest argument yet for the egalitarian role of the brain.” –Kevin Berger, Nautilus“Bold and important….Damasio, by unseating the mind from its elevated throne within the brain, delivers an onslaught on one of the core dogmas of conventional neuroscience. In his view, mind is distributed — for instance, to distant anatomical regions such as the peripheral neural networks that control organ function. Thus, different tissues in the body contribute incrementally to the mind’s function. Damasio’s vision offers a new and specific incarnation of the thesis of unified body and mind….Compelling and refreshingly original.” —Nature“Damasio goes further than convention, calling homeostasis ‘the powerful, unsought, unspoken imperative’ that ensures an organism will both endure and prevail. More subtly, it ensures that life will be regulated within a span that is not merely compatible with survival, but also ‘conducive to flourishing, to a projection of life into the future of an organism or a species’….Breathtaking, thought-provoking, and simply fun. Agree with the author or not, the book is an enjoyable read. It will challenge many of the reader’s assumptions as well as the status quo.” —New York Journal of Books“Damasio analyzes the continuities and the differences between natural life and human cultures, considered in their artistic, political, ethical and medical dimensions. In this effort the borders of the human do not disappear but are instead shifted, made movable. As a result, his exploration of life”s surprises becomes a stimulating and exhilarating exercise in redefining humanity itself....Damasio’s books are marvels of scientific effervescence, of conceptual invention, and, in the end, of modesty, of that sense of the limits of knowledge that only knowledge is capable of imposing....In Damasio’s thinking, to live consists of projecting yourself into life, shunning vulnerability and death, powered by a foundational force that he names homeostasis, a concept that The Strange Order of Things perfects and amplifies.” —Le Monde“The originality of the unity proposed by Damasio is that it is rooted on the mechanisms of life itself and in particular on the conditions of its regulation, an ensemble of phenomena generally designated by a single word: homeostasis. This daring approach allows us to tease apart the links between cultures and nature and to deepen as never before the question of how the cultural process can be humanized....The Strange Order of Things bridges two contradictory readings of the elaboration of culture and human behaviors: autonomous cultural phenomena versus the consequences of natural selection conveyed by genes. For Damasio there is no need to choose between them. Damasio also refuses to reduce cultural phenomena to their biological origin, or to explain the ensemble of cultural phenomena in pure scientific terms....Intriguingly, this novel Copernican revolution in no way reduces the specificity of the human, on the contrary....Here is a new, strange and unassailable definition of life.” —Slate (France)“For this world renowned scientist brain and body are indissociable and produce the mind jointly....Ever since his first book, Damasio has not wavered in his efforts to rehabilitate emotions and feelings within cognitive processes. In The Strange Order of Things he nails down the effort and goes well beyond....Feelings are agents of homeostasis, the powerful principle behind the regulation of life. The human saga, in the strict sense, owes a lot to a highly developed cerebral cortex, but the essentials of that saga had been germinating long before.” —Les Echos“[Damasio] exerts a considerable influence on the fashioning of contemporary thought and on all debates concerning neurology. Damasio is one of the great thinkers of our time. A pioneer in his field.” —L'Express“[Damasio] has introduced something baroque in a science that has been centered in one single organ, the brain. The Strange Order of Things vibrates with a baroque sensibility. The word baroque has a Portuguese origin and signifies 'irregular pearl'. Human intelligence and its products are irregular pearls and not perfect algorithms....The Strange Order of Things is a biological interpretation of human phenomena, complex human societies included. The book expands on a proposal Damasio made following his first discoveries in the eighties: the brain is only a part of a whole and that whole is the body. Together body and brain engender feelings....Feelings are sentinels for life’s fragility, for the body’s mortality. This is how Damasio installs homeostasis at the origin of all human endeavors. We can not attain any goal without the desire to attain it, in short, without desire itself.” —Le Figaro“This disturbing book shakes our conceptions of the mechanisms behind life, mind and culture. The author brings them together in a single perspective centered on homeostasis … It is incredibly, formidably, refreshing....This is a memorable book. A strange and ambitious book, which draws on multiple disciplines and moves across time and space to give us, very simply, a new definition of life.” —Revue Medicale Suisse"Damasio takes his reader on an intellectual journey he has made himself, one of discovery, surprise, and insight. He explains his points thoroughly but does not simplify what is complicated. He is handy with a metaphor and avoids unnecessary jargon. In a world in which specialization has become so refined that the discourse of a given discipline often becomes wholly unintelligible to those outside it, Antonio Damasio conveys his thoughts with clarity and grace and summons the works of composers and writers and philosophers. When I reached the end of The Strange Order of Things, I recalled the closing words of William James’s Psychology: The Briefer Course when he tells readers that “the darkness” is “great” and urges them not to “forget that the natural-science assumptions with which we started are provisional and revisable things.”—Siri Hustvedt, Los Angeles Review of Books"In what must by any standard be rated a ground-breaking shift in the way we understand ourselves, Damasio has shown that our lives, our cultures and our very selves are outgrowths of feeling, the origins of which are in humble micro-organisms that lived billions of years ago." —John Gray, Literary Review

In celebrating our humanity and distinctiveness, we have long prided ourselves on our reason intellect to the neglect of our emotionality, which brings us closer to our animality. In our current cultural milieu, with its flood of social and broadcast media barraging us continually, we now find ourselves floundering--and foundering--in a sea of emotion. As Damasio makes plain, we cannot bail ourselves out by reason and intellect alone. I hope this is not his last book, but he appears to be taking stock of our current cultural scene in light of his decades-long learning from research in neuroscience, summarized marvelously in a series of prior books.Well informed by biological science, the book gives needed space for commentary and reflection that puts the science in perspective at it pertains to our profound cultural challenges. Plainly, our human distinctiveness is a mixed blessing. But the relatively rare thesis that Damasio explicates suggests that we need to rely more on our feelings, not less. Indeed, his prior research demonstrates convincingly that we are utterly at sea and directionless when we are deprived of feeling and reliant solely on intellect. Of course, powerful feelings (especially in the anger family) can lead us into destructiveness, as our intellect also can do. But Damasio makes a major psychological contribution in this book by encouraging us to feel more at one with our bodies and to appreciate and value our feelings--the mental representations of our bodily state in relation to homeostatic conditions. Feeling more at home with our bodies through awareness of our feelings might be a pathway to feeling more kinship with the rest of nature. Driving this point home, exemplifying the "strange order" in nature that he discerns, Damasio makes the claim that our morality (and sociality) has some origins in the lives of bacteria. (Perhaps this is a good thing, inasmuch the bacteria in our bodies greatly outnumber the other cells.) While wedded to biological science, Damasio is far from being reductionistic in his thinking (and feeling); on the contrary, he is expansionistic, keen to open readers' minds (and hearts) rather than confining them to materialistic dogma. In summing up what he has learned, thought, and felt, Damasio is grappling with no less than understanding the place of humanity in the world while fully appreciating the limits of our capacity to understand where we fit in the cosmos. In this sense, although it is implicit rather than explicit, his book is in line with current trends in ecologically oriented theology. Expansionistic indeed, while remaining thoroughly grounded in science. In this book, Damasio appeals to a wide audience, writing with flair as well as erudition, in an engaging and minimally technical style. He is willing to go out on some limbs, but he certainly knows what he's talking about.
Damasio’s books, DESCARTES’ ERROR, LOOKING FOR SPINOZA, and THE FEELING OF WHAT HAPPENS, had a profound effect on my thinking, teaching, and research. At least as important, since they were accessible to the attentive and reasonably ambitious general reader, they were books that one could use in the (graduate-level or advanced undergraduate) classroom. Indeed, I still use portions of DESCARTES’ ERROR in class.By my lights, Damasio’s books have been on an unhappy trajectory in two respects. Later books have been both much less accessible and much less valuable. They have become much more difficult to read, much denser, and at times painfully abstruse. They have also become more frankly conjectural, more tangentially connected with evidence, and at times outré. In the current instance, the game simply is not worth the candle.I found the book very hard going, and too ‘grand theory of everything’-ish. As the book wore on, I was doing less focused following of the argument and more skimming to get to the next chapter. This left me both in a poor position to write an analytic review of the book, and—conscientiousness aside—unwilling to devote the considerable time and energy it would have taken simply (!) to get the book carefully read.Wondering whether I had become less cognitively competent and more arrogantly impatient, I went back and looked at the first few chapters of DESCARTES’ ERROR and LOOKING FOR SPINOZA. I found them as exciting and as accessible as I did when I first read them, years ago. I think that it is Damasio whose focus, writing, and style of argument/speculation have changed. There are, indeed, (ostensibly content-focused) reviews of THE STRANGE ORDER OF THINGS appearing now in greater numbers. I’d urge people contemplating reading Damasio’s new book to work through at least a couple of them to get a sense of what lies ahead.‘Why three stars?’ some wags are no doubt wondering. Though I cannot indeed endorse the ‘clear’ descriptor that comes ith the three-star rating, I felt that it was fairest. ‘Shrug’ was not an option.
As a fan of Damasio's work, I eagerly anticipated reading this book. The experience was similar to anticipating the first day of an undergraduate class with a celebrated professor, notebook open and pen in hand. However, by chapter 2, I was staring out the window planning the rest of my day. The book read like lecture notes from an entire semester of a relatively low-level undergrad class replete with some off-topic quips and colloquial stream of consciousness explanations/solutions/rambling on the state of social politics. That social ills can be remedied through more robust educational means is not a novel concept and not why I took this class. That said, Damasio comes alive when he makes his case for the historical subjectivity of feelings (contrast to emotions) as an embedded component of the central nervous system necessary for homeostatic survival and, thus, the evolutional root of consciousness. Unfortunately, the gems of his case are randomly scattered throughout the course: you'll have to sit through of what feels like 20 hours of lecture to get 2 pages of great notes. Admittedly, I had to start skimming early on and most likely missed a few points. The book seems to waver between journal article (stultifyingly long explanations of simple concepts with copious footnotes aimed at satisfying the most egregious academic peer reviewers) and interesting case study (think great NOVA documentary).2/5 stars worth of invaluable content...the rest, not so much.

This is a cute book but please note this is not paper that you can take the stickers on and off. It's regular paper.
Yeah, this is just a regular book that says stickers with a pretty cover. Disappointed in the purchase. Seriously could have made this myself.
The album is made of regular paper. It’s not a reusable sticker album. So once you place the sticker on the sheet, you can’t pull it off. I could have just given my daughter plain white because that’s all this album is.
these are great!!! was looking for a good sticker book that was not themed, but just the blank pages. up top the pages say my stickers. it's pretty cute and the kiddo loves! sticker books were such a great thing for me growing up and hard to find now, i was happy to come across this!!!
