About the Author

Mildred Bangs Wynkoop was a theologian in the Wesleyan-holiness tradition and an important contributor to its body of writings for decades. I did not have the privilege of studying under Dr. Wynkoop but her touch in this book of the historical development of the Wesleyan-Arminian theology is a must read for all who profess to be of this theological persuasion. It would also be helpful for those outside this tradition as they seek to better understand those who hold this position

It's an excellent book. I usually like shorter books that are to the point, but I would have gladly accepted a longer version of this book with more details of the differing views with a balanced tone.

Dr Wynkoop makes a simple and clear defense of biblical holiness and defends it both theologically and logically against opposing views that paint their constituents into a corner.If you don't want to take the time to read Dr Wynkoop's landmark work, "A Theology of Love," but want to have a basic understanding of holiness doctrine, buy this book. Read it carefully and slowly, not all at one sitting.THIS is an excellent work and an essential resource for unraveling some of the verbiage that confuses holiness doctrine, especially as it compares to erroneous doctrines.

Within the span of about 120 or so pages, Dr. Wynkoop concisely covers the history, development, and contemporary position of what has at times been the most divisive issue among protestants. She pulls no punches when she offers her critique of Calvinism and her view of what is at stake in the debate, and yet she does so with grace--always reminding the reader of the contributions of Calvin and Calvinists and warning against further division in the Church.I bought this book wanting to know more about classical Wesleyan-Arminianism theology, knowing I leaned in that direction but only having known the debate from the Calvinist side. Reading this book made me realize how much the debate today revolves around Calvinism, in that the debate seems to always be for/against Calvinism; this is significant because even if Arminianism is the assumed alternative, few rarely understand or appreciate why this debate is important--seeing it only from the a Calvinist's insistence on a proper understanding of God and grace. For Dr. Wynkoop,Orthopraxy--how Christians live out their faith--is what is at stake. This book convinced me and I highly recommended it to all--Calvinists, Arminians, and those in-between!

Those who don't like Mildred Wynkoop's "Foundations of Wesleyan-Arminian Theology" (1967 and 1972 paperback) would do well to reconsider her brief but poignant work. This small book (only 128 pages total, two of which are an extended bibliography) firmly defines the differences between contemporary Arminianism and Calvinism. It is a one of a kind teacher for the Free Will-Predestination debate.Beginning from a theological base Wynkoop accurately presents these late 16th century doctrinal movements. She explains that neither side understood the other to be biblically based. Considering the prominent followers of the initial Jacob Arminius and John Calvin (Eipscopus and Beza) she says that those students changed the original perspectives of their teachers. Debate, often turning murderous in the late Reformation period, began which continues into the current day.With brilliant clarity the author describes the Synod of Dort's adoption of the Calvinists' "Answer" to Armininism and its heretical declaration for the Remonstrants (Arminius' followers). This book suggests that today's Prevenient Grace-Irresistible Grace debate took root from that 1619 decision. By the end Wynkoop traces the debate's influence on John Wesley and many modern Wesleyans (Wesleyans tend to follow Wesley's Arminian lead).This enterprising book is a must read for all who have ever considered the Arminian-Calvinist controversy. If you are a member of the debate you will be informed with Wynkoop's Wesleyan perspective. If you are new to the quarrel she will teach you. This book is a quick read and will prove to be a valueable quick reference for all Free Will-Unconditional Election debate students. It is very recommendable.

A very good, short, easy-to-read book. I'd drop the last chapter, which is problematic in numerous ways, but the rest of the book is great. Nazarenes continue to use this year after year, and for good reason.

A great understanding of the development of both Calvinism and Arminianism is presented in this book. Mrs. Wynkoop has a gift for making theology and church history come alive. A great book!

The Frog and Toad books were my son's favorite growing up. I loved them, and I kept them for many years. When my grandson was old enough to understand the stories and start to read, my son asked me if I still had the Frog and Toad books. Of course I did! My grandson is now enjoying these--over thirty years later! They are great books about friendship, helping each other, and taking care of each other. I still love these, and I take every opportunity to read them to my grandson!

I have very fond memories of reading Frog and Toad when I was little. They were funny then and they're funny now, some thirty-odd years later. I have purchased three of the Frog and Toad books for my child and love reading them to him. I bought Arnold Lobel's books in hardcover when they first came out. Our children adored the stories and illustrations and they wanted us to read them every night at bedtime. By following along as we read Lobel's and other "I Can Read" books, our children learned to read before they entered school. The stories are definitely designed to facilitate reading skills but they are also engaging, with a focus on friendship, love and behaviour. I cannot recommend these charming books enough.Now for the negative comments: The Kindle versions are extremely disappointing; the font and illustrations are quite small. One can double tap and increase the font size a little bit, in small sections. This doesn't allow for reading to a child while smoothly running a finger under the words being read, as it would if all of the text on a page was enlarged at once. Running a finger under the text is a significant step in teaching a child to read while using "I Can Read" books, so this particular "double tap" method defeats that purpose.In addition, the illustrations don't seem as vibrant as in the hardcover books and they can't be enlarged. The publisher did a real disservice to both the author and the readers by the poor job they did in transferring the books into digital format.Even with my dislike for the way in which the publisher digitalized this book, it is still a very worthwhile purchase. It's message is timeless and the stories and illustrations are sure to appeal to both it's target audience and to the adults reading it to them.

Arnold Lobel was one of the few authors who can read their own work well. This is one of the best audio books, bar none. Arnold is not only better than any other author, but most of the professional actors who have done audio books. What I should say is that he tells the stories, he doesn't read them. The music that accompanies the telling, I can take or leave.

Arnold Lobel was such a wonderful writer, I'm not quite sure what to say about this book or how to say it. For now I'll leave that to the other 5-star reviews. I'm just here to tell you the Kindle edition needs some work.The problem is this isn't really an ebook but a set of scans - single images, two pages at a time, so that you can't even read them in portrait mode. Perhaps the newer Fire models can accommodate this somehow, but on both my Paperwhite and my son's 7" Fire, as well as the Kindle desktop application, each two-page scan is forced into a single landscape display. I don't exaggerate when I say these are nothing but images of the pages. There seems to be no interaction available with the text, and zooming in on the illustrations isn't possible. Even basic pinch zooming in on the entire page isn't permitted.I don't approve of giving good books poor ratings because of publisher laziness. If I did, this one would get 2 or 3 stars. The colors are a little more vibrant than in the newer print editions, and for what it's worth the scans are clear. The table of contents does work, but not from the Go To menu, only on the actual Table of Contents page.If you already own these books in print and you have a big Kindle or REALLY good eyesight, go for it. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and buy the physical books. Lobel's work is essential for both children and adults, stunningly wise at times and always beautiful. The Frog and Toad stories are among his best, and these ones are particularly good.
