About the Author

Dr PJ Cullen is a lecturer in?the Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales. His current research interests include rheology, mixing, chemical imaging and non-thermal plasmas for biological applications in food. He has published over 35 journal papers, 15 book chapters and edited 1 book on food mixing. Professor Rodolfo J. Romañach is Professor of Chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico. He has over 20 years of experience in vibrational spectroscopy, and worked in Puerto Rico's pharmaceutical industry for 12 years prior to joining the UPR-Mayagüez faculty. In the pharmaceutical industry he worked extensively in assay and cleaning validation, and in providing analytical support for API and pharmaceutical process related problems. Professor Nicolas Abatzaglou is Director of the?Chemical Engineering and Biotechnological Engineering Department and Holder of the Pfizer Chair: PAT in Pharmaceutical Engineering at the Universite de Sherbrooke, Canada. He is the current recipient of Quebec's Minister of Education (MELS Chantier II) Fellowship award for his excellence in research and teaching. Professor Chris Rielly is Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University. He has taught chemical engineering for over 20 years at Cambridge and Loughborough Universities and is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers with more than 20 years of experience working in experimental and computational fluid mechanics. His interests include multi-phase flow, mass transfer and turbulent mixing in chemical processing equipment. He has served on the Scientific Committees of the European Conference on Mixing, the International Conference on Gas-Liquid-Solid Reaction Engineering and the Process Innovation and Intensification Conference. He is an academic consultant to BHR Group's Fluid Mixing Processes Industrial Consortium and Chairman of the IChemE's Fluid Mixing Subject Group. He has previously edited books.

A debut that more than lives up to all it's hype. Victoria Aveyard's RED QUEEN is an unforgettable read. This book hooked me, made me fall victim to it's brilliantly crafted plot twists, had me rooting for it's main character, and got me all riled up over the story's uprising. This book left me wishing the sequel is already out, because I couldn't get enough of this story.The WorldThis is a dystopian world unlike any other I've read about it. It's a world structured by inequality, and ruled by a powerful people. In this world you either are of Red blood, or Silver blood. Red bloods are powerless, and lack super nature abilities and power. They're the working class, and live in poverty. If you're of Silver blood, you are powerful. These are the people who have a variety of super powers and abilities. As super power goes, they are used for good and bad purposes. These are the people rule over all the others. If you're our story's main character, Mare, then you're something else entirely.The CharactersMare has grown up with her red blooded family. She does what she can to get by and help support them. She dreams of falling in her brothers' s footsteps and fighting on the front lines of an ongoing war. After a chance encounter one night, Mare quickly finds herself in the house of Silver. There Mare learns she's of both Red and Silver blood. A powerful person in her own right, Mare has just begun to realize the power within herself, and they things she can do with it. Mare is strong, fierce, and that person whom can easily lead an uprising.The characters in this book are awesome. I love well written characters. Each of the characters Victoria introduces into her storyline all have a purpose for being in it. One of the things I really liked, was not being able to know who to fully trust. Mare has to learn to not only guard her heart, she also has to learn who to trust. In a game of politics, and power, she has to quickly learn who's a friend and who's her enemy, before it's too late.The RomanceThe romantic element is AWESOME! Fear not, the rumors you hear about a love triangle..... I personally wouldn't call it a love triangle. There's a political motive for the one, and a real feeling for the other. It was obvious from the get go whom had her heart, and to whom she's forced to be with. When a character is forced to be with someone, that does not make it a love triangle. The plot twist with one of the "romantic" leads was fabulously done! I completely fell for against my better judgement. It is that good, and well crafted.The Plot TwistsThe plot twists are so awesome! These are the kind of plot twists that I at first could see some of them coming, but then along the way I fell victim to the twist itself, because of how Victoria wrote them. These are brilliant, surprising and oh so well plotted. I love it when I think I have things figured out, only to be fooled and fall victim to the twists. There are so many twists layered within the story, and the various characters, it is impossible to predict all the shocking discoveries, secrets, betrayals, and murders.Oh you evil, twisted characters. I fell for what you did, even though at first I saw right through it, and mentally screamed at Mare to not fall for it. Somewhere along the way you made what you did believable, and you lured me too. I can't wait to see what Mare and those who are with her, have in store for you in the next book. What an awesome turn of events. This book is action packed! This book kept me on the edge of my seat at all the right times. And that ending? Didn't see that one coming. I need the sequel like now!RED QUEEN is epic! It's action packed, well written, and hard to put down. This is a debut worth picking up!

The Red Queen which is the first book in this series is fantastic. I would describe it as a Hunger Games meets Harry Potter story. I was hooked immediately and tore through the first book but unfortunately that’s where this series peaked. Book two was meh and books three and four were terrible. First, they should have been combined and this should have been a trilogy. Second, they just seemed to drone on and on with so many unnessary scenes and story lines. Finally and most frustratingly is that after reading these books it’s appearant Miss Aveyard has never been in love and has quite possibly only experienced terrible relationships. She excelled in describing the disfunctional relationships between the characters but all the emotional moments just fell flat. All the romantic relationships within the book were luke warm at best and unfortunately you are forced to read all four books to figure that out. I had such high hopes for this series after reading Red Queen and was thoroughly disappointed. If you don’t mind ending in a cliff hanger I’d say Red Queen is an enjoyable beach read, but save your money on the next theee books. You won’t get the satisfied ending you expect after spending $45 and countless hours reading.

Over the years I have read a lot of adult and young adult fantasy/urban fantasy. Given my experience with the genre, patterns start to stand out.In the Red Queen, some of those typical F/UF patterns are definitely presented, which DID make me say "hmm" when my mind was led to other series that I had read.THE PLOT: Overall, there are some details that make this world unique. The division between the people, into the Silvers and Reds brings something new to the table and gives a little bit of the author's own flair. However, it follows the traditional setup of today's young adult dystopia when she creates the conflict between the HAVES (Silvers) and the HAVE NOTS (Reds). The Silvers are born with powers (literal, social, and political) as well as privilege. Their unique magical abilities make them "deserving" of ruling the world and too special to die in the midst of the long-running war in their world. The Reds are ordinary, and they take up the burdens of the world such as the heavy working with a conscription deadline of 18- if they do not have a job at that age, it is off to war they go.THE CHARACTERS: Mare Barrow, the main character, is OK. There is a lot that happens in this first novel, a lot of hard truths and experiences that set her up for some overdue character development in 2016's sequel, The Glass Sword. Some of her issues put her on the pedestal next to Suzanne Collins' Katniss and Veronica Roth's Tris; she becomes caught up in a revolution and hasn't found her footing between being a pawn, a revolutionary symbol, or standing on her own two feet and being a real person-- not a tool. There are some characters that readers will love, and others that they will love to hate. Aveyard does a decent job with her other characters, making it easy to form an attachment (and a clear preference) between the two princely brothers, Tiberian (I won't tell you his other name and spoil things) and Maven.THE TWISTS: I won't ruin things and go into specifics, but there were a few major twists within the novel. The most important one is both surprising and unsurprising. When this twist was revealed, I could understand why Aveyard made this move, and it made sense for the purpose of her plot. At the same time, I did not LIKE this twist and had hoped it wasn't coming. It sets up the rest of the major conflict for the second book, but readers may find themselves frustrated when they have to adjust their view of a previously lovable character.THE ROMANCE: There's enough of a romantic spark to provide some conflict for Mare and move her relationships forward into complication. She is the basis of three different romantic interests. One with an old childhood friend while the others entangle her with the two princes. Aveyard toys with the reader, making it seem clear (at least to me) who Mare should be with, and then almost gleefully ripping that away. In some ways, I think that this is good for the reader. Too often we get set into our own ways and beliefs of how a book should turn out, and it can be refreshing (though disappointing) when we have to adjust and be open-minded to pairings and characters that we didn't root for in the first place. Plus, it also lets you root for a relationship despite the odds, if you don't want to give up.OVERALL IMPRESSION: Overall, I enjoyed the book. There were enough familiar patterns that I could make some predictions about where the main story arc would take Mare, but not enough to ruin my experience of reading the Red Queen. For those of you with the spare money, time, and an avid love of F/UF, check out RQ. It's worth a read, and with the sequel coming out in the next month and a half, interested readers won't have long to wait for the new installment. I hope Aveyard continues to distinguish her storyline within the second book, and help pull Mare out of Katniss and Tris' shadows.
