I enjoyed reading about so many aspects of the lead-up to America's involvement in WW1 that I never learned in high school history class. Having well-developed characters who are forced to change because of the events around them made for a compelling read. The only drawback to my complete enjoyment was numerous instances of missing punctuation.

A vivid retelling of the sinking of the Lusitania, riveting and well researched. The author pulled every thread making up the tragedy and wove a suspense-filled story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters and personality types of the early 20th century are true to history and as the Lusitania sailed toward tragedy, I couldn’t put it down.Curtis Carlson is on the Lusitania in order to bring loan papers to the UK to help them in the war effort. The US has yet to enter the World War I theater, but the allies need their help. He meets the lovely Josette and her twin Yvette and their family moving to the UK, the charming Mrs. Donaldson and her dog Mr. Duns. There are spies aboard and munitions, but there are innocent civilians, and it’s heartbreaking to read how the Lusitania was carrying so many children with their families.However dark the story is, how realistic, there are some rays of light at the end of the journey.

The author's extensive research for IN THE SHADOW OF WAR is evident in every chapter. Historical places in New York City, in Ireland, and the Lusitania itself are described in beautifully written, vivid detail. I wondered how the author knew the inside and outside of the doomed ocean liner so well. In her Author's Notes at the end, the author writes that she was given access to an enormous model of the Lusitania, featuring a cutaway portion to view the inside of the ship, at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA.The storyline is complex, eventful, and well-paced with colorful, multi-faceted characters, some famous and drawn from history. Josette Rogers and Curtis Carlson, the novel's charming young protagonists, meet in NYC under chaotic circumstances. Events having to do with the terrible war in Europe require them both, for separate reasons, to reluctantly board the Lusitania to travel to England. A shipboard romance ensues, but when a German torpedo hits the Lusitania the couple is torn apart. The author's description of the dreadful chaos aboard the fast-sinking ship is riveting and heartbreaking. Reading the passages where Curtis views all the dead bodies brought ashore in Ireland, looking for Josette, made me weep. Nevertheless, despite the trauma and the demise of important characters, the novel ends on a positive note. I enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it.

In the Shadow of War by Colleen Adair Fliedner is a book that has many good elements such as an exciting spy subplot, well- drawn characters, both fictional and nonfictional, a compelling love story, and a tightly constructed main plot that explores what was happening in America and the world before, during, and after the sinking of the Lusitania. I could write about any of these integral parts of the book, but what I keep coming back to is the development of the heroine of the story, Josette Rogers, as the main reason I am drawn to this historical fiction.At the beginning of this story, Josette is a charming, intelligent, young woman in her early twenties who often lives in her head rather than her heart. She eschews her sister Yvette’s more romantic, emotional view of life, not herself being a fan of sentimentality, although there is some evidence that Josette is capable of great compassion in her sympathy for a German household employee’s horrible treatment by certain Americans and her fear for the young strangers she meets who are going off to war. She argues well at a college meeting regarding whether or not Americans should stay out of the war going on in Europe, but she has no personal experience of the violence and tragedy of war, just her quotes and esoteric thoughts based on logic only. Then she becomes a passenger on the Lusitania, and all that she thought she knew about the world through her book reading and her reticence to be susceptible to strong emotions is challenged by her personal experiences and new perceptions. How she changes from this voyage on the Lusitania is, in my opinion, the crux of this story. I consider her a true heroine, and her personal experience of the Lusitania tragedy adds so much to what is already a well-written book. Highly recommend!

From all of my high-school and college history classes, I knew about the sinking of the Lusitania, but when I read In the Shadow of War, I learned the story behind the story. I had no idea there were German spies in the U. S. and was unaware of all the political intrigue that went on behind the scenes regarding the beginnings of the U..S.'s involvement in World War I. Colleen Fliedner has done a masterful job at exposing all these details and the truth behind the sinking of the Lusitania. This is a must-read!

Meticulously researched making you feel like you're there. Strong emotional characters to take you through the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. A must for those who love history.

My 8yr old enjoyed this

My 5 year old grandson has been insisting for months that he's "going to be a paleontologist" when he grows up. So, even though a lot of words in this book are well beyond his current reading level, he Absolutely Loves it! -- and he wants it read to him over and over. Big hit!

Perfect for him! He is 10 years old and just starting to like reading enough that he will read stories on his own.

My 7 year old loves this book from beginning to end. It's very informative and a great read. Your child will love this book!

Good story, great book for the time before chapter books.

She starts the book with a basic wrap technique and ends with a three layered yarn that is the spinning equivalent of rubbing your stomach, patting your head and dancing a jig all at the same time. In between she teaches about loop, coils, corespinning, beehives and all of the combinations of skills that make up the yarns that Jacey is known for and has been teaching around the world. There are typically 4-6 photos for each technique in this book and 2 of those are (really gorgeous) beauty shots. The remaining photos exactly illustrate the crux of making each yarn. These process shots were clearly chosen by Jacey herself. Each yarn technique is broken down into numbered written steps and explained in mechanical detail: set your wheel up this way, your fiber hand does this and your drafting hand does this. There is no magic. With this book, you learn yarn making in a way that is a repeatable, intentional yarn. You can look at the pictures and read the words and watch the DVD to have the lessons soak into your spinning mind through a variety of learning styles. The DVD follows each of the yarn lessons in the book -- it's very straightforward. It's great to see Jacey spin at her regular pace and also slowed down, so you can see the steps. I am only on the third art yarn technique in this book, the tornado (which is still in chapter one) and I am LOVING it. I just want to make tornadoes all day long. Jacey is right when she says you will learn a lot about what you thought you already knew; I feel like I'm learning to spin all over again. I'm learning more about how to use my wheel, particularly tension; I'm getting more control - working with three strands of different yarn and one roving and getting them to come together in something that looks like a tornado but with some artistic value is so satisfying. The yarn is turning out great and it's so forgiving (i.e. you can't tell where it's mucked up when the whole thing is a tornado!)I went back briefly to spin a traditional yarn and it actually felt different. It was easier and I noticed that I did have more control.This book opens up a whole new world of creativity with yarn and I am enjoying it tremendously.

I have been spinning less than a year and am very grateful for this book and the DVD that comes with it. Jacey Boggs is that one in a million teacher that we all hope to have. Her easy to follow DVD has helped me jump into textural yarns and the book is one I have read over and over. She has sound, logical advise and I would recommend this as a must have book for any spinner's library. If you don't know, Jacey also has an incredible publication called Ply magazine which is packed from cover to cover with very valuable, sound information. Truly she is a gift to the fiber world. LOVE!

I've been spinning for years and didn't have much use for novelty yarns. What do you do with them? And why waste all that time for a yarn that in the end wasn't all that useful? Then I saw this book. It's not really that the novelty yarns presented are better than they've ever been, but the explanations of how to make them--and why are beyond wonderful and the yarns themselves are fantastic eye candy. There are no finished projects in the book (unless the yarn itself counts, and that's just fine by me), but the beauty of the yarns and the clarity of the presentation made me start looking for the possibilities. And don't overlook the included DVD. I'm not much on instructional videos, but this one is very good AND shows knitted swatches. Best spinning money I ever spent!

The DVD in this book is the best part! While Jacey can't help but have some cross-over similarities with Lexi Boeger's work, they both have unique techniques to get a spinner inspired to go the next level up in creative yarning. Crazy stuff in that DVD and very well organized with music and staging. This is for the true lover of spinning.

This book and DVD are exactly what I hoped for. Good video, clear directions, excellent examples. Jacey is a wonderful teacher. I hope to see her in person some time soon.

After years of spinning gurus teaching us to spin finer and finer, Jacey has made spinning fun again. Funky yarns and colors. One disappointment is that this book is tamed down somewhat from her first DVD; the set is bland and the yarns have become "useful" And I miss the band with crazy wool hats.But seriously fellow spinners, this book is fantastic. You can read about the spinning tecniques, then watch Jacey actually do it. What a great idea! Then if you need a quick refresher, look back at the book. Useable for beginning or advanced spinner.Jacey is aware of balance and structure, so your yarns will not only be cool but you can actually knit and wear them!AND this book DVD combo is a great price. You can't go wrong here, get it for your library!

After spinning even textured yarns for over 30 years, I'm ready to try something new. Spin Art: Mastering the Craft of Spinning Textured Yarn is what I've been looking for to teach me how. The DVD is great. I would definitely sign up for a class with Jacey Boggs. This book/DVD set is the next best thing. Jacey's approach is filled with common sense and she recommends using the equipment you have. You don't have to go out and buy a special wheel to create textured yarn.

Jacey Boggs did a fabulous job on this book! the photos are stunning, the instruction is clear and easy to follow and her tips are very helpful. I love that she added a dvd and have viewed it several times, she is very charming and ingageing. I purchased her book before it came out, I order 2 copies and was confident it would be a great spinning book because I have read her articles shes done for spin-off magazine. She did not let me down, and I hope she writes another!

What a treasure trove! I love the set up of this book. It starts from the very beginning- with the parts of a guitar. The format of the lessons mixes theory with technique and practice. Mr. Ferrante covers some of the most famous guitar riffs so I can really feel like a rocker as I learn to play guitar.The videos make learning from a book so easy! It's the next best thing to having your own personal teacher. Mr. Ferrante speaks clearly. He is personable and makes me feel like learning to play the guitar is within my reach. The demonstrations of the fingers are clear and concise. This book is a true bargain!

This course is an amazing value to take a student from the very basics in rock guitar through at least two or three years of instruction. I simply cannot believe how much material is included. The videos are extremely helpful, especially with young learners. My 12 year old son already knows how to read music somewhat, BUT this course is helping him in areas where he struggled. My 10 year old step-daughter is ecstatic that this is available for her to use now. She had been using YouTube videos and printed materials that confused her.There are videos throughout the entire ebook, located on the exact page where they are applicable. This book is golden: comprehensive, crisp maps & photos, and a ton of useful information for hikers, rock-climbers, photographers, and first-time visitors of every stripe.I brought this with me though am poring through it now, more than while in Yosemite. Great for planning (an overview) as well as getting more info post-trip as I look through photos and try to match up some of what I did and what I photographed, with maps and photos. Comprehensive is the word.I can only add that this was one of two books shown to me by the concierge at Yosemite Valley's Ahwahnee (Majestic) Hotel, the other being a photographer's guide (mostly about lighting technique and camera setup, along with locations).It's just a great compact & encyclopedic guide, this. Even with wildfires closing parts of Yosemite as I arrived (the first day it re-opened, in mid-August), the book offered useful tips and suggestions as I went to some "Plan B" and C alternatives to what I'd originally planned within the park and surrounding areas. One of those plans involved lodging at the edges - East and West - of the park, in case it was entirely closed. This brought me several days based near Mono lake, which was less smoky and quite scenic, with interesting unique things (like the Tufa in Mono Lake), and as a bonus this book includes Mono Lake. So I could not ask for more. Everything one might want or need relating to Yosemite, activities, and the area.

relied on the book on a recent trip to yosemite (may 2018). great tips and recommendations, hikes are accurately described (length, difficulty, scenery) and directions easy to follow. the book is clearly organized into sections reflecting the areas in the park. the only suggestion i’d point out as inaccurate is the claim that the gas inside the park is cheaper than around. it was on average $2 per gallon more in the park. however, since we visited in the off season, perhaps the high season is different.

Far and away the best guidebook I’ve ever used - like his other books, James Kaiser’s latest Yosemite book is full of essential information, fulsome history and amazing photos. It’s the only book you’ll need for visiting this special national park.

One of the best travel books. Has great information about history, wildlife and surrounding area. I have the Acadia book as well. I wish the author would write more!!!

James Kaiser writes really useful and compelling travel guides. We have several of them and we love the Yosemite guide best of all. It is informative, beautiful and comes with both travel details and ideas for hikes and exploring. While no guide is perfect (we would have liked more detailed camping info) overall we find this one of the most useful guides we own - and hence why we just bought a copy for our family who are going to Yosemite this summer!

Terrific book! The photos are spectacular, and it's just a fun book to read - lots of great anecdotes, history, and solid advice on how to do the park right. This book sealed it for me: Yosemite will be the next national park I visit. Got the book a week ago, and I've already dog-eared about two dozen pages for the sites and hikes that I want to hit.

This book has beautiful pictures and great summaries of many places in Yosemite. It isn't really a complete guide, as that would require a multi-volume encyclopedia. I was very happy to bring it to the park with me.

Covers history and geology, flora and fauna and describes very well the several regions of the park and associated activities, especially hikes with discussion of length, terrain, altitude rise, estimated time, etc. Vivid pictures for all areas, as well.
